I like the birds, I never totally ignore them, I just pick the ones on my path, and if the quest is hard, I take a few more, I usually never go to the max. And they are good because if you struggle in a quest, you can exchange time against more chances to win, so it's a good trade for players struggling with a quest

Part of the problem is that the desire for preparation to hunt has mostly been in the item department, and since that's been made easier and easier on top of never being punished for ever messing up prep because everything at camp, the spiribirds feel like you're being forced to do something that just gets in the way of getting the job done(assuming good skill level here). It's more goofy because of the full birds on arena type quests and the spiribirds call skill feeling like a band-aid admittance that they are a time waster. There's also a weird bit that wasn't mentioned here, and may be a minor grievance but it's worth pointing out. The UI basically set up in a way that if you ignore birds you're constantly reminded by the bars not being full to the grey area. So not only do most people ignore it, the reminder of the thing they dislike is plastered in their face a large amount of the time.

I've never had a strong opinion on the birbs until I started hunting with a coworker I just ran a route that never took more than 30 seconds to get most of my health birbs then I was on my way to the monster, and if I was gunning I'd grab a few extra to get topped off But then this coworker would not ever start a hunt without capping out their entire pentalace. Which frequently took around 3 minutes So if I were gunning I would have the monster nearly at half by the time he even got there I think this is where the main sticking point is for most people. Cause I'm annoyed that I'm soloing a monster, and he's annoyed that he only gets half a hunt worth of fun It's the divide between peoples strategies that lead to frustration

even worse with randoms in multiplayer! takes time to find players and then it takes 3 minutes for them to start fighting. at that point, i would have killed the monster if it wasn't for the extra hp it gets from the additional player.

I usually try to gather as many attack birds as possible (yellow when I use bow/dual blades/hammer or whatever chews up stamina) and max the petalace when doing the endgame stuff, but it depends on who I'm playing with or how impatient I'm feeling. If everyone rushes the monster I'll go for it too, but if they're gathering birds I might as well bulk up too until they engage

I am a religious spiribirb getter. I always eat for lvl 4 bird caller, it takes routing for birds down from 4ish minutes to around 1, and now I include paths that get me endemic life, so I always have at least two helpers at the start of a fight. I love the system, feels like old monster hunter preparation to me, gives me the same vibe. I am unsure how I feel about afflicted monsters almost making them a necessity to not be one tapped. I always get them but I see how other people could find that very frustrating.

Capcom always introduces new mechanics and are making them too strict. Hot/cold drinks only last 5 min. If they lasted 10 minutes, nobody would dislike them. Tenderizing in World only lasts 90 seconds. Make it last 5 minutes and nobody would complain. Spiribirds are pain because you have to grab a lot of them. Make them 3 times as potent and again nobody would complain, because it's easy to max out your petalace.

I enjoyed what world/borne did with tracks and increasing your level of track the more you fought a monster to unlock their location on a map. Sunbreak for the most part is a flat map with some different areas on each map, while older games has more intricacies.

I'm glad I spent base Rise developing my Spiribird routes on each map. I can get full health, stamina, and either defense or attack in under 5 min on each map. Since they removed tracking monsters and added the increased movement via riding your palamute the entire process is sped up so spending a few minutes gathering Spiribirds isn't that big of a deal for me. If it's a multi-monster quest I do usually head straight to the first one and gather Spiribirds on the way and during the fights.
@stephenjohn2131

Multiplayer hunts right now are finished under 10 minutes so while you were gathering birds, other hunters have almost killed the monster that was scalled for four hunters. Don't get this wrong iam not saying that gathering birds is wrong, it's part of the preparation aspect of the game and makes a difference between a failed and successful hunt sometimes. But you should find a route that takes you less than 3 minutes. I don't have a route but i can still highlight green spiri birds on the map and be done in a minute if i want extra health. With that said there's no wrong way to play a MH game so enjoy how you want, happy hunting!

I actually turned off the minimap as of yesterday out of curiosity just to see if the bird collection aspect would feel more engaging and here comes a video on that very thing. I've been enjoying going without a minimap because I've been more observant of the environment than the icons in the left corner. Personally, I am of the "collect just enough to feel comfortable" crowd, which is just a few birds to avoid potential kill thresholds.

3:00 Or....some players enjoy taking them en route to the monster! (like me) What you mention about the spiribirds being item boxes (from Mariokart) was part of the intention to begin with imo. They're there to bridge whatever gap in skill there is for the variance in players. Say in Mariokart, you want to just beat the competition with pure racing skill- you can do that; and if you wish to "level the playing field" by disrupting competition or giving yourself an extra edge- then you can do that too- so this applies not just to spiribirds, but also to hunter helper critters. The point is that casual or lower skilled players who need an advantage but don't care about hunt time can collect and add comfort to their hunt. "Not needing spiribirds" can indeed come as a consequence of becoming better at the fighting mechanics, having played longer/progressed further in-game, having unlocked subcamps/fast travels, having better gear, not needing to collect items due to a stockpile, etc. I for one, enjoy running around before meeting the monster if for at least less than 1 minute or so per hunt, collecting spiribirds, critters and items- especially ones that are getting low in the stockpile (gunner problems). Playing like this has allowed me to greatly delay my need for doing pure zenny or plant/mining/ammo runs. So if the birbs are en route, I just grab'em. And if I know certain monsters might cause me troubles HP wise, then I grab them green birbs. No harm done. No fun reduced. Also, the dirbs were to me, the most impactful during the initial playthrough, when we didn't know exactly how challenging the monsters were going to be, and when the map was hidden. Indeed, the critique that seeing everything on the minimap clashes with the gathering points, hunter helpers, spiribirds, and parkour traversal. Finally, GUYS! It's okay to get off a game! If you feel like you want to put down MH for whatever reason, be it life happening, work, tiredness, or other games you want to play (gasp) then put it down. If MH was so perfect that you won't do anything else for the rest of your life- then you're in some deep trouble. Go do something else, and when the hunt is calling again- pick it up when some fresh new eyes.

Just make Ancient Potions work like they should. They are just another max potion in Sunbreak cause it doesn't give you max health and stamina outright. You still need the birds to increase your max. If you want birds then grab them. If you don't want to then you can craft Ancient Potions. Or if they still want birds in Sunbreak to still matter, at least make Ancient Potions give you like half of your max.

If spiribirds were extra, then that'd be fine. But they did away with the hp/stam buff from eating as well. Forcing people to, as you said, either gather them or ignore them. I'd say put food back the way it was, and have spiribirds offer other enticing affects. Atk/def increase, hp/stam regen effects, etc.

This is both the best take, and the only objectively good take on spiribirds. If you don’t like them. Don’t use them. If you like them. Use them. but never force an option on anyone else. It’s how you play the game, play it as you like, but never force anyone else to play your version of the game. Because then it’s not fun anymore.

Fun fact I realised, if you're leaving from the base camp (the one we spawned) with a Palamute dashing most of the time, you'll mostly reached the monster about the same time as someone who jump camp using a Palico, but with extra birds on the route. And if you don't mind using Spiritbird Caller Dango lvl4, this can be a huge different. Even then I also realised that if your hunt is more than 7 minutes, Spiritbird Caller Deco is always worth it

This as a nice shake-up, I've missed the proper hunting experience from older games (especially World), and while I have been experimenting with just turning the map off it's been so-so. Spiribirds I find I'm in a middleground between the two camps already: I'll take a route to the monster but purposely go off the beaten path to get spiribirds while still going towards the monster. If it's a monster I'm more familiar with, I'll get fewer or none at all. If it's an absolute pain, I may go further out of my way to get as close to max health as possible. I do hope the next MH game actually iterates on the pre-fight phase of a hunt to make it more engaging while also not being tedious.

I am also of the camp that turns off the mini map and looks for the monsters. Again makes it feel more like old monhun for me. Side note: I know you stated you did not know any routing, but man showing this routing or lack there of really discourages people who are frustrated with the system and won't show them how easy it could be. I think following this up with some optimal routes while eating for bird caller lvl4 ,which has a 100% activation chance BTW, you could encourage and show people how minimal the investment can be. Around 1 minute and 30 seconds, you can have at least one helper, and a free + 20 raw which is better than booster is! Along with extra health and def, and stamina which for a lot of weapons directly translates to DPS/continued attack opportunities.

I always enjoyed learning monster spawns and locations in the older games. Knowing the map by memory instead of having it in view was something I felt accomplished by. As when dropped in a random spot, your knowledge is what gets you going. I fell rise/sunbreak has lacked this greatly. That being said, it’s still a great game in its own right. And a combination of what rise has brought and what old games held would be even better.

For me personally, i dont find that gathering spirit birds lessens my enjoyment in the slightest. It's just a minor annoyance that has the upside of letting me make creative gathering routes wich is its own kind of fun. After perfecting them, most of my runs take about 2 minutes. Also, with Anomaly investigations, its a good way to farm afflicted nodes and its also a good way to pick up helpers (toads are often rng but w/e) That being said, i wish i coud just take an ancient potion and be done with it but ohh well...

I equip the low cost SpiritBird caller decoration and eat for lv 4 Dango Bird caller. The decoration is extreme high value as it will increase health, stamina, attack and Defense passively while fighting all for a measily one slot and the Dango makes it so each buff is x2 and you don't have to be close to pick up a bird. I say this as a gunner and not only do I hit harder but I never have gotten one-shot by a basic attack (only those telegraphed one shot attacks because I was stunned) because SpiritBird defense buff.

I think if they want to bring back spiribirds for future monster hunter games, the ideal way to do that is to just include the red and orange ones, and let you use items to buff your HP and Stamina. Attack and defense buffs are nice bonuses, but for casual or unskilled players the HP buff is necessary, and for stamina-intensive weapons the stamina buff is also necessary, so they don't feel like bonuses but mandatory parts of a hunt
@soxandbears

My simple solution - add 4 horns. Demon horn attracts all red, armor horn attracts all orange, health horn attracts all green, stamina horn attracts all yellow. Caveat - you lose the birds you call via horn when you faint (also don't count towards optional subquest completion). and the ones you gather are permabuffs

You could also eat for dango spirit caller with a dango voucher and hopping skewers which doubles the effect that collecting birds give you and also attracts them from a little further away with a 100% chance. (Credit to caoslayer) You also clearly used that food skill in the footage where you turned off the map and searched the monster and I think you should have included that information for people who look for a way to maximize their health or entire petalace. Furthermore you can use sniff 'em out to mark all the birds you want on the map to increase efficiency. That way it hardly takes any time to fill your healthbar and it also really speeds up completing your entire petalace. A thing that I can also really recommend when not using a dog is throwing kunais at the bushes on the way for bonus birds. For me at least these things made it more like a minor inconvenience rather than a chore. I even find enjoyment in this ritual of collecting birds and endemic life. But I think it is a mechanic that is made for rise and should stay in rise.

While I appreciate the effort of your videos in general, I really don’t think this one brings a good solution for the spiribird controversy as you call it. No matter the camp you belong to between caring about them or not, hiding the map is imo a really bad suggestion from the perspective of « how to fix the spiribird problem ». It will only extends the frustration much longer for the player. However, I fully agree that hiding the map can refreshen the game’s experience but that was not the topic ! An actual good solution is to open your map and filter the icons displayed on it to show all the spiribirds. Combine this to Spiribird Dango lvl4, then either collect all the birds you want (you’ll quickly find the optimized routes this way according to which stat you want maxed out), or just go towards the monster and collect the birds on your way. I’ve been applying it since day one of Sunbreak’s release with great success and satisfaction on my end.

Yeah I agree. As someone who kinda enjoy running my spiribird route I think the spiribird was created so people would have something to do while running after the monster. If they got rid of the monster icon on the mini map and actually had the hunters find the monster we wouldn’t need spiribirds. Spiribirds are kinda like a build your own difficulty setting but Hunter Help can do the same thing. So Spiribirds are very unnecessary. I feel World/Iceborne had the right idea they just need to tweak it a bit to work with the speed and mobility of wirebugs. Should have tried to fix the tracking and hunting instead they thought spiribirds was the right idea.

Spiribirds, endemic life and now the afflicted gathering points to find new investigation quests all tell me Capcom is tired of people not actually playing the damn game but complaining that they don't have enough health, or monsters don't give enough openings, or they run out of items. tbh I do agree the problem are the permanent auto-tracker and infinite Farcasters plus subcamps/buddy recon. We always had to go find the monster and doubt anyone would've cared if we got power ups on our way there anytime from FU to GU. The problem is now you don't have to find the monster, you can see it right away. And you don't even have to go after it, you can just teleport roughly on top of it. People are missing that not all mechanics are for all players. These things help speedrunners and grinders. If you're not a speedrunner or aren't grinding for a specific mantle (which you don't even have to anymore thanks to Bahari), DON'T USE THEM. Just like scores in arcade games, just like time attack modes in some action games, they're there for the people who wanna do the challenge, but if you just want to focus on other aspects of the game like collecting gear and crafting weird sets you can still do that perfectly fine without ever touching the "quick play" mechanics. Also if you're that weird guy who can't no-hit/speedrun worth a damn but still insists on only playing META gear to ruin someone else's hunt by carting immediately. Eat lv. 4 Bird Caller dango and pick the fucking birds, it's in fact the biggest buff you can get from dango and all maps but the Citadel have a roughly 90 second full power route. You will never get better times without spending those 90 seconds anyway.

That way the tracking has a purpose other than gaining information on a monster and would make the tracking process infinitely more engaging.

That's part of the issue too imo. Rise promotes such high-level ADHD nonstop high-speed gameplay, that every time you're NOT attacking the monster, you feel annoyed. Monster running away? Not dealing damage, annoying. Collecting spiribirds? Not dealing damage, annoying. Monsters chaining attacks? Not really scary, just bothersome. Quests taking 15 minutes? Too long, annoying. Meanwhile in all the previous games, it was the complete opposite. A 15 minute quest was a breeze. A monster chaining dangerous combos legitimately made you feel hyper-focused to come out alive. Exploring the map to find the monster was fine, even more so in World with the tracking system. Running away? Perfect opportunity to take stock of your situation and recover before tracking it down again. Anomaly quests exacerbate the issue even further by basically telling you to hit the monster even MORE as fast as possible. Yeah I get that endgame quests are meant to force high-level play, but even in Iceborne, which was already considered faster-paced by many, stepping away from the monster to dodge or reposition or approach from a different angle felt totally fine. That's because you could feel the dance. Going back to the Old Gen games feels the same way, so I 100% know it's not some kind of bias. Still love Rise though.

I don’t mind if people gather them or not. I didn’t do it previously but I started to do as a habit more lately. I guess first I like to see bigger number and I don’t like getting one shot if I accidentally made a small mistake. I think spending like 1 min or less to gather them is better than accidentally cart and fail the whole quest. What I hate is people kicked me out from the quest when they see that i didn’t teleport next to the monster in 5 seconds. Sometimes I just went to grab birds quickly on route to monster like 30 seconds. And I already got kicked. And I have to quit the quest. I could finish the quest alone in less than 10 but it spoils the fun for me getting kicked. I also enjoy multiplayer more play it alone.

If I need to keep it in check at all times, it's a bit too much multi-tasking for my ADHD brain to manage, so I prefer having a full bar just in case and not have to worry about it. Although for some late-game fights it's useful to have a full health bar as well to potentially avoid one-shots even without Moxie. But most of those fights give a full Spiribird at camp anyway.

My issue is that spiri birds are pointless waste. In older games you ate before a quest or you used an ancient potion. I'd be fine If they gave just Atk and Def but to hide your health and Stam around the map contradicts preparing before a hunt and makes ancient potions (which are still in the game) pointless.

Lets make secondary mechanic less tidious (spiritbirds) by making the main mechanic (searching - fighting monsters) more tidious. No thank you. Statisticaly no matter what settings for the UI game has, the vast majority of players will not use it, they will play with as much convinient UI as possible.

if you only have to get 5 to max out it would be 100x better

Terrible mechanic for a multi-player game. Doesn't matter how easy or hard it is to gather them. We didn't need birds in every other game and we didn't need them in rise.

Spiribirds are such a terrible mechanic. I dont use them and its fine. I wish everyone else would ignore them as theyre just not necessary and they make online hunting annoying. There's always those 1 or 2 guys who spend 3 minutes or more wandering around grabbing birds or maybe pretending to so they can leech off the others. Either way, if youre only present for the back half of the hunt just so you can give yourself a needless cushion, its mooch behavior. Even if you interact with the system taking advantage of all the spiribird skills, it just pointless tedium (which id be down for if it was in any way adding to the atmosphere, its just so video gamey it adds nothing but extra running around to the game).

I never bother with Spiribirds either, even in Sunbreak when I'm fighting LV100 afflicted monsters. Spiribirds are utter garbage. Even with spiribird setups and Dango meals that help you max out your health and stamina in 30 seconds or less at the start of a hunt, it's utterly idiotic that the game is even designed this way in the first place. Yeah, a creative player can find a way to max their health and stamina in 30 seconds. But Monster Hunter isn't a game where you're only fight a monster ONLY once. You'll be hunting monsters dozens and even HUNDREDS of times. And those 30 seconds (per monster) accumulate like crazy over time to minutes and hours wasted if you try to do it when you hunt every monster hundreds of times. Let's say I farm a single monster 100 times and grab the Spiribirds, with each Spiribird run taking 30 seconds. 30 seconds times 100 is 3,000 seconds. That's FIFTY MINUTES IN TOTAL I waste just collecting Spiribirds for farming ONE monster 100 times. And that doesn't even factor in the time AFTER doing that it takes me to get to the monster. Multiply all that by the number of large monsters there are in the game, and that's DOZENS of hours wasted just to collect birds. Even if I get one-shot by a monster that I could have avoided had I collected Spiribirds, it's still less time wasted overall than spending time at the start of each hunt to collect these trash birds when long-term hunting over the course of hundreds of hunts is factored into the equation. Here's a solution: Give me back Health Boost +3. Give me back the ability to have Max Potions and Ancient Potions max out my health bar when I consume them.

I tried this myself a while ago and personally it didn't add anything fresh or stop burnout for me. What caused burnout was needing so many bones and pelts and you can only get the lower ones from bears and raptors and they don't give a lot. Anomaly overall burnt me out on the way to lvl 100 and I also feel like you need max health birds for the higher level ones otherwise the risk is too great especially in multiplayer. There's other reasons too but overall Rise even with the improved Sunbreak included is my least liked of the series. Right now I'm on a break from it all. Also not a fan of the rng rolling on gear but that's another topic.
