How to fix the Panigale heat issue: I think the Ducati Panigale is the best looking bike I have ever seen - in all of its incarnations. One issue all the versions of the bike suffer from though is a hot rear end where the plumbing for the exhausts exits the engine and coils around under the rider - this leads to a very warm backside! In this video I show you the new Panigale heat Shield from the people that brought us the Throttle Spacers - until now my favourite Panigale mod by far! Stay tuned to find out more....
Mention The Missenden Flyer when buying from panigaleheatsh... for discounts on Panigale heat shields or throttle spacer kits. Use the code MISSENDEN to get the $10 discount on the heat shield, or heat shield/spacer kit bundle.

Watching this video brought back all the grim memories of spending six hours trying to re-install an infinitesimal screw that connected the upper and lower fairing of my 888. It convinced me that Ducati engineering has a sadistic bent. I once took a five day ride up into the Trinity Alps of Northern California; in addition a total electric cable meltdown due to engine heat, I also scored a 30mm circumference 2nd degree burn to my rear thigh because of the intense heat. Mind you I was wearing proper racing leathers, but the heat was that intense. I only came across your videos an hour ago, but you do a better job than the so-called KZbin "pros". Thanks.

options: The fan switch mod has been discussed extensively on numerous threads. If you do not want to deal with a manual switch, Trail Tech makes a micro thermostat switch that clips on the radiator that has a miniature LCD display (it's very small)You can program the temp to the desired setting. Just wire the fan to the unit and it will switch the fan at whatever setting you provided.

Looks to be a very smart upgrade. When Jeret Campisi did the Panigale they did, they also used thermal tape up under the actual heat shield for the exhaust also; which they were very happy with. I personally removed the foam from under the fuel tank of my '13 Street Triple R that Triumph calls a 'heat shield' (!!) and replaced it with some (pricy) thermal tape that really seemed to do a much better job. Might be something to consider for your (beautiful) Panigale in addition to the kit you just added. Seems like a logical thing to me and based on my own experience... a smart one to consider.

Question, I work with thermals in lighting LEDs actually. My concerns would be yes the thermal image shows a reduction but heat has the go somewhere so it’s reflective and my guess is it goes back on to the engine. So worth a look out to see if the engine runs hotter not normally a good thing. Hopefully they did a thermal test in a wind tunnel to get the correct thermal graph. 👍 looks good though and will save your backside getting hot 😀

I watched even though I don't have a Panagale! Liked the idea of putting the masking tape on the bench so you could label the fittings to make reassembly easier MF. I put all the panels off the GS on the floor on a sheet when I stripped mine down and put the fittings back in place but for what you were doing it was ideal. I was waiting for you to knock them on the floor with the seat LOL but fortunately that didn't happen.

Great video, (as always), very good camera angles. One of the biggest mistakes in the normal KZbin 'how to do it video' is poor lighting with badly positioned cameras, yours is so clear, it's obvious you have spent some time and effort to get it just right. Also when working on your own fragile jewel-like superbikes, you are taking great care and allowing plenty of time to make a good job of it, do you think dealers will try as hard not to break parts during servicing?
@TheMissendenFlyer

Who knows John, I'm aware I'm a rank amateur and don't know what I'm doing so try very hard not to break anything and understand what it is I'm doing as I go....I like to assume that dealer mechanics are professionally trained and know their stuff......ass/u/me?

I recently bought Ducati 959. Below are the queries to be resolved. 1) My Ducati gets hot just in a while. May be in 15 km of ride on80 km/hr speed. What could be reasons for this? 2) I run on “HI” flag warning for 15 km one time at speed of 100 km/hr. Is it recommended to ride the bike on hi temperatures.? 3) fan start at 100degree. N fan flow towards the ground, may be flow towards up to engine? 4) what shall be the ideal speed per gear.? Please do reply at the earliest for all above. Regards Ranjit

It makes a significant difference but she still runs hot (actually quite nice in the UK climate) - other than that I'd say be sure the paint has a potection film on it as the 899 didn't get a clear coat layer for some bizarre reason....oh, and get a throttle spacer fitted.

Another informative video, not a huge Ducati fan, thinking back to the first 916 which came home on the back of an AA truck more times than was funny. But everything has got better, so never say never. As I'm also fanatical when it come to the detail.. something fell off as you took off the left hand side panel.. 21:54 you see a small black item hit the floor, was it just a stone or a grommet ? Good man SP - that throttle mod in particular is a winner....you gotta do it! Look forward to hearing how you get on...also have you fiddled with the EBC setting? Since I backed off my engine braking the bike is a whole lot easier to ride...
@sharpbends
@sharpbends 6 жыл бұрын
Actually I quite like the default 959 EBC setting, in Race mode anyway. When I first got the 959 I thought the engine braking was almost non existent (like a 2 Stroke engine) compared to previous 2008 Monster 1 litre S4R and Ducati 916 prior, both of which had massive engine braking completely overpowering the back brake. 959 EBC is more subtle initially at onset due to slipper clutch no doubt and I often use it to modulate entry speed into corners rather than touching brakes, the Throttle mod will make this control even better I am hoping :-)

Great video, I have a remark regarding the way they put the exhaust and the ECU. Is bad. For sure heat and electronics are not good friends. I know a case with the can bus form GS adventure oil head and the place where it was fitted was on the left side, under the thank. That thing was getting so much heat from the left cylinder that the circuits got fried. Maybe a heat shield for ECU wold be a good idea to.

Can't help wondering why Ducati wouldn't do this themselves? That 10 degrees hasn't disappeared, it has been reflected back at the rear cylinder. Hello there Mr TMF.... I am looking to buy both the spacer and heat shield kit as a combo. I also waited till now I've bought the comfy seat. So.... I would be interested to know if the heat shield kit worked for you on a hot summers day? Did you notice the bike running hotter as the heat is possibly reflected back to the engine etc? On my first run with the comfy seat, I've already noticed the seat it's self has already reduced the heat to my bum. I'm not too worried about the heat in general but any reduction in heat does add to the comfy value to the ride. Interested to hear your thoughts and views before I purchase the kit. Many thanks, Ash.

Thanks TMF, I always panic a third of the way through fitting any aftermarket part that I should have had a pro do it but then after completing it thinking it wasn't so bad. Given the amount of complaints about the heat on the Panigale and the number of bikes it effects I'm surprised Ducati don't sort the issue. I don't believe anyone should have to correct something like that.

Looks like there's some space under the gas tank and the top of the engine, can't we just quickly wrap/slip a large heat shield sheet under there? Just got my Ducati 959, I am concerned about the heat, too.

Even the scrambler range suffers from similar heating issue,what with the bike being air cooled to begin with.....they have a similar after market kit to deflect heat away from the seat ...don't see it helping a great deal though ..

In case anyone was wondering what the purple bottle of meths is, it is methylated spirits (methanol/ethanol blend). Here in the US it's sold as HEET (yellow bottle) which is 99% methanol. The red bottle is not the same formula, I believe it's isopropyl alcohol or the likes. Cheers!
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 6 жыл бұрын
I had no idea meths wasn't a universal thing!
@phoenixrising4073
@phoenixrising4073 6 жыл бұрын
TheMissendenFlyer I read about it a while back, but as I understand, meths is an international thing but a non-US thing. The guidlines vary in some countries as to how much of the formula consists of actual methanol, some 50-50 etc, plus a small amount of denaturant to make it undrinkable, and outside the US it appears purple coloring is added. I'm guessing in the US we would rather a child mistake it for water instead of grape kool-aid, as we apparently consume more kool-aid than water. ;)

Thanks for you video. Just done the same on my 959 (took me 3 hours). I have to say this thing doesn't solve the heat issue dramatically. Still feel the heat between the legs however the heat is bit more tolerate than before. I assume if you ride in city a lot, it would be good investment. Or save your money, just wear leather and ride fast. haha

Excellent video as always. But can you imagine a car owner doing all this work to correct a design flaw? As ever with Italian machinery, form over function. This mod should be a Service Action by Ducati, imagine paying a main dealer to install it? Parent company Audi's customers wouldn't put up with such a charade to solve a product issue.

1199 burned a big Fxxking hole on the left leg of mine Alpinestar textile/goretex pants after only 15 min on the bike! So hot, but the D675 was hot as well as the hot steam/condensation from the engine/radiator got on the inside of the wind shield and on the visor of the helmet when standing still waiting on the lights to turn green in the city on certain days. AND when you just want to visit a nice coffee place during a hot summer day in a tanktop/t-shirt and shorts (speed is max 50km/h in the city) people ask why you shave your legs... :P

@paullee6663

I'm no expert, but I'd have used Meths in preference to White Spirit or WD in your case, as +Grumpy Garry said if Meths couldn't remove any serious 'gunk' they maybe WD first, then Meths. Meths is an ideal cleaner if you are going to try to get something to adhere to the surface afterwards, as, as you rightly said, it leaves no residue, and dries quickly. Good tip on labelling all the parts and their locations on a piece of paper, and taking photos. What a faff....and a great video as always.
