When bought my 959 a few months back I opted for the rider and pillion comfort seats and radiator stone guard, the dealer had already fitted the accessible battery fly lead and the original lead is still under the pillion seat. I have since fitted Moto Science foldable mirrors as the stock ones were fixed unlike the 899. Being an old bloke (I bought a 959 when I was 59 ;-) I 'm really happy with the rider comfort seat and find the whole riding position quite comfortable overall and much better than a prior 916. I've left the underseat mufflers, similar to the 899 as stock as being in Australia we got the US model that does not come with the fugly Euro4 dual muffler cans. I have also fitted Philips H11 Ultimate Diamond Vision 5000K Halogen HID Xenon Low beam headlight Bulbs which are excellent and a lot cheaper and simpler to fit than doing the full LED headlight conversion. (Here's a video of someone fitting the headlight bulbs kzbin.info/www/bejne/pny2eYqogNKda5Y )

Excellent - thanks for that Gary, lucky you not having to put up with those fugly pipes, if it wasn't for those I would have bought a 959 rather than having to find the last 899 in the country!! Great machines though both....cheers - TMF

All in the eye of the beholder.. but for me the biggest change in terms of riding was/is changing the guff standard pegs! And replacing the standard grips with pro grip 717's. The rear seat cowl in my opinion is also a must for looks.
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 8 жыл бұрын
Yes agree re the rear seat cowl for sure (who'd want to ride on the back of one of these!!)...and must check out the pegs, although I must say I don't really have an issue with the standard ones although I know lots of people complain about them...

if you have a 1199 or a 1299 like me your first concern is the terrible marzocchi front fork , the rebound damping is rubbish and the fork will also break down as in all the damping in and out completely gone .

TheMissendenFlyer Apart form the obligatory tail tidy the old 899 comes sorted straight outta the box. Not alot needs changing apart from some personal preferences. A far more usable road bike than the 1199. Although they have ironed those out for the 1299 apparently. That could be the upgrade your looking for. Although for the elder gent like ourselves the new touring influenced Ducati (supersport I think they call it), with the wide bars may be worth a look. Or just go get the 1299 guided missile. And of course the raven haired beauty on the pillion whispering in your ear.

...I intend to have a look at the Supersport at the NEC next week, but somehow after the 899, I don't think it'll quite cut the mustard...I rode a 1299 a while back, for a road rider not significantly better than the 899 I thought - so I'm sticking with it for now :0)
@UnknownProdrive

TheMissendenFlyer Your thoughts on the 1299 are interesting. Look forward to seeing your NEC trip. Enjoy. Just to give you the heads up. If you go over to 44 teeth's channel they give a really good tour of the EICMA show. May be handy for marking your card for what to look out for at the Birmingham show. They do a good job well worth checking.

Making a bike "your own" is undoubtedly one of the great pleasures of ownership. I'm always interested to see what you think is important. I'm about to go through the same process. After a year of ownership trading the GS in for a red/white R1200R Sport. Lack of garage space means I am limited to 2 bikes. Love the GS but always had an itch for the R! Enjoyed your take on what is important - I bet without the mishap your priorities would have differed? Regards, Jon.
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 8 жыл бұрын
Good question Jon - maybe they would have differed but not by much I don't think, the fact Ducati don't lacquer the small red Panigale's (same on the 959s) is pants, so that paint protection kit would still be a must...but you're right, I may not have appreciated quite what good value it was. Enjoy the new bike, I look forward to hearing how you get on with it...all the best - TMF

@marcusrodriguez9992 8 жыл бұрын
Great list....looking into the paint protection from your other video. May I suggest an incredibly cheap upgrade ($35.00 USD) which has made a ton of difference? There are small plastic throttle spacers on eBay which take about 10 minutes to install and make an incredible difference once you actually ride with them on. I did not realize that the throttle had so much unnecessary play in it until I installed the throttle spacers. It takes up that small amount of "play" the throttle has and gives a much smoother, less "choppy" throttle. I still scratch my head wondering why Ducati does not install these from the factory if they cannot engineer a throttle without a small amount of play. Thanks for your video
@TheMissendenFlyer
@TheMissendenFlyer 8 жыл бұрын
Yes I've heard a lot about these - I haven't noticed a particular issue with my throttle (although that play is there) and given the amount of people that have recommended the spacers I may well give them a go - do you have to remove the grips to fit them? what's involved?? Cheers - TMF
@marcusrodriguez9992
@marcusrodriguez9992 8 жыл бұрын
TheMissendenFlyer --I am not mechanically inclined almost at all and did myself in 10 minutes. Involves literally two screws to take apart the throttle body (sounds worse than it is). Once apart, you just slip the spacers over two small notches and reassemble throttle body. One of the throttle body screws is actually an odd size so the $30 eBay kit actually includes the bit making it even easier . You DO NOT remove grips at all

Lovely bike indeed! But I don't do sports bikes (titanium leg bones and knee won't bend enough lol) Very surprised at Ducati selling a premium bike without a clear coat to cover paint. As you said if your paying top money for a bike you want to protect your investment. Cheap cost cutting measures on Ducati's part.

@TheMissendenFlyer

'fraid not, at least in this country (and probably all EU countries), the tyre isn't allowed to stick out the back further than the bike bodywork on a new bike, so manufacturers are forced to add these plastic monstrosities to get the number plate out beyond the rear tyre....everybody then immediately replaces them - crazy rule!

I've some perhaps slightly obscure changes/tips rather than accessories as such, taken from personal experience and also tips from the operators of a high mileage Panigale; depending on how you use the Panigale and what year you have; 1) I recommend an aftermarket seat for the 201{1,2} model (and similar kitted out models), as the stock seat is a little on the thin side - it may just be down to my boney arse - this was changed for a more comfortable seat on the more recent models (>2015?). 2) You may want to consider replacing the clutch-side engine cover for a two-part type, because if you're into DIY maintenance: you've a nightmare of a job dismantling the bike on clutch work with the rather large single piece type. 3) If you're covering a lot of miles on the '11/12 model you may want to get a tray of spare mirror fastener plugs, as they pop out. 4) Protect, or otherwise be careful with the little gators on top of the fork loom, as Ducati don't (or didn't) sell these on their own, they were only offering them with the loom!
