So I would do this if I can hear a motor trying to work but the fan isn’t spinning? My top two shelves get hot but not bottom 2

Sounds like the element for hearing is working which is probably the thermal fuse is working. Sounds like the Motorola might be broken if it's. Ot spinning the fan. I'd contact Excalibur and see what they say as I'm. Not 100% sure

Hi, thanks for the helpful video, I appreciate it heaps. Just wondering, my one is also four tray and that thin spring that goes around the string is broken and only goes about 1/3 of the way around on both sides. Do you know if this does anything? Thanks again

Hey Your welcome. It's not the spring that goes around the whole unit? I think that it what heats up. I'm not sure which spring you are asking about. Can you pinpoint a spot in the video and I can look? It may just be a tension spring for the temperature dial, but not 100% sure.

@@MrSpinkle1 hi, thanks heaps for the quick reply. you can see it at around 6.32 mark. it goes all the way around the white piece of string. I didn't realise that coil heated the whole unit, perhaps that is what the issue is for my one as its broken and only goes about 1/3 of the way around. the thermostat broke some years back and I replaced it so I just assumed it was the same thing again..

Hi Jon, what was the symptoms of a broken thermal fuse? Mine still works but just runs hot regardless off the dial. Seems thermostat related.

It wasn't blowing any heat, just cool air. It's happened twice over 15 years so I'm not complaining. it's a $10 part from Excalibur but people have told me you can get the fuse from a local store that carries fuses. It be worth changing it maybe? If it's running hot and not amusing temps that can affected the product you are dehydrating.

Hi Carni. Did you ever resolve your overheating issue? My 5 tray unit is doing the exact same thing. I would guess the variable thermostat but wanted to see what you deduced first. Thanks.

What size or specifications are the fuse? I do not have time to wait for one to come from Excalibur.

Honestly not sure. You could probably just take yours or and the specs should be on it.

I bought a 5-tray that wasn't working but the fuse was. not the problem, the fan wasn't working. Being a bit of a cheapie, and not wanting to pay the price for a new fan (in New Zealand it costs 150 NZD!). I opened the tape and coverings over the windings and found that there is another thermal fuse for the fan itself to protect the windings. The part is about 50c! I am happy to say that the fan is now working. The trick is that you have to use crimping sleeves to attach the winding wire to the fuse. BUT one other problem I found while trying to fix the fan was the cord that goes through the heating element and I guess holds it up that had broken in several places. The cord appears to be fiberglass, definitely doesn't melt but I can't seem to find a source. Anyone out there dealt with this and knows where to source it? Cheers!

Thanks for telling us about your problem and how you find it. Maybe ask a electrician about a cord? They don't get that hot so wonder why it would be fiberglass?
