Thanks for making this video! As soon as you started to explain what happens behind the scene in Final Cut, the light bulb turned on and I said “I need to add a freeze frame”. Then you said almost exactly the same thing with the hold frame. Keep up the good work! On a side note please keep putting in the keyboard short cuts. Those are really helpful!

Many many years ago there was an NLE called EditDV which did exactly that when you were short media for a transition. What would be nice if you could enter the duration of the Hold Frame as you created such as Hold +12 (for 1 second 24fps dissolve for example).

A Hold or even a freeze frame should be automatically created by FCP whenever we try to do this. Love FCP, but this is yet another one of the great frustrations that we run into in FCP. Apple should be making FCP into an AI-style powerhouse that does things like this for us. Another great vid. Thanks!

This happens when I try to add transitions between compound clips- is there a way to make that work without going into each compound clip and extending the ends? Thanks!
@TheFinalCutBro10 ай бұрын
Technically you could still use the hold frame method here. But obviously if you have the extra media, that would be way better! Unfortunately, to my knowledge, the only way is to either pre-extend your clips before you compound clip it, or jump inside, extend out the media, then adjust it in the main timeline. I would love for someone to share any extra tips on this if they happen to know!

Or another way is place your cursor in between of the two clips then combine two clips into one compound clip and then Shift + B to cut it again and voila! You can now use transitions.

@TheFinalCutBro10 ай бұрын
Technically you could do the same hold frame method in this video. But to my knowledge, jumping inside the compound clip is your best bet. I may be wrong, and would love for someone to share some insight on that though! -- Generally, if you can, whenever you make a compound clip, try and give yourself handles on each side of the clip, before it's compounded. Then trim them back afterward. Obviously it's hard to think of this every time, but it does help a lot if you happen to think of it!
@theurbanspokesman7 ай бұрын

Or, you can combine both clips into a new compound clip then cut that with the blade where the two original clips meet and then add a transition. There are probably drawbacks to this (you can end up with lots of compound clips), but it's a bodge that works fine for me.
@AndrewHelbig10 ай бұрын
Hey Dylan, thanks for the super helpful videos! I was wondering if you can make a video about something that maybe sounds kind of dry but is very important, FILE MANAGEMENT. I've started to make more videos for clients (instead of just myself) so I'm finding myself having to spend a lot of time deleting past files and compound clips I made and also sometimes just running out of space from having so many different files for many projects. Do you think you could share some tips you've learned over the years about this broad topic? Sometimes I've found myself using only 10 seconds of a 3 minute video for instance but still have to keep the full file for my project to work, which eats up a lot of space when it's 4K we're talking about. Also when downloading files from Envato, they are always super big in size, so I have to spend a bunch of time exporting smaller size versions of them to make my projects be smaller. Would be nice to know your workflow about all of this stuff. Thanks again Dylan! Andrew

Sure! If you don’t want to have any deeper understanding of what the actual cause of the problem is. Then yeah, that’s when it starts.
@BabaGanoush5129 ай бұрын
I totally understand why it's doing this but is this something recent? It's been a while since I've done some editing in FCP (about 2 or 3 months ago was the last time) and in the past I would be able to just select a transition drag and drop it between two clips and it would automatically overlap the clips for whatever the duration of the transition I would select, further more it would just let me grab the ends of the transition and make it as long or as short as I'd like. I must be doing something wrong or have changed a setting.

this is bullshit. On EVERY Final Cut tutorial on KZbin , people are adding transitions without this hassle. They just drag and drop transition, plying with duration of this effects by dragging yellow transition box from left to right without creating ANYTHING in addition. And This is absolutely shocking for a new FinalCut user as me, because I though that FinalCut on default strings will not block in this stupid way timeline. Im looking for solution finding this video and.... Im more shocked by this "solution" of yours. I was using pinnacle video ediotor on Windows and transitions works there exactly how it works on Final Cut tutorials on you tube. No hassle - drag, drop between clips grab transition and expand duration. NOTHIN in addition. NOTHING. Can some one tell me which settings in Final Cut should I change and for the love of god - WHY THE FUCK this is not changed by default? If I will have to do SO MUCH WORK on EVERY time I wan to use transition... OMG what a waste of many that was to buy Final Cut
@TheFinalCutBroАй бұрын
That’s because they followed the beginning of this video.. where it says you need to just make sure you don’t hit that red edge when you have your clips on the timeline. There’s no setting to change.
