How To Fix Troubleshoot Laptop Computer Key, Keys, or Keyboard Not Working

If your keyboard or any of its keys do not seem to be working, this video will help you troubleshoot why, and learn how to fix it. If your key 'FEELS' like its working fine and you want to try the system fixes, you can jump to 3:59 where that part starts. FAQ's
Q: My keyboard is not working enough to follow these steps. What can I do?
A: If your keyboard is not working enough to follow these steps, then try using an external keyboard. They will usually plug into a USB port and should allow you to perform these troubleshooting steps. You can also try reseating the keyboard ribbon cable to see if that helps.
Q: My Key Cap will not click down in place correctly. Whats wrong?
A: If your Key Cap is not clicking down in place correctly, it is most likely due to the Retainer Clip not being properly installed or damaged. Remove the Cap and inspect for damage or that its not laying down flush and properly snapped in itself. Compare to another Clip if needed by removing another Cap.
Q: The Retainer Clip / Hinge Clip is not staying down on the Keyboard.
A: The retainer clip should be attaching to both the key cap and to the keyboard. If its not attaching to the keyboard correctly its because the keyboard pins are bent out of place, the retainer clip is damaged, or the retainer clip is not orientated correctly. If you cant figure it out by just looking at the clip with is hard to do sometimes, remove another key cap and compare the correctly installed retainer clip to yours.
Q: The Hinge Clips came off with the Key Cap. What do I do?
A: Because they key can usually not be reinstalled with the Retainer Clip and the Key Cap still attached to each other, you would have to separate them as seen here, using a small flat pry tool.
Q: Where can I purchase replacement keys?
A: If any component of the key assembly is broken, it would have to be replaced. I usually get my keys on Ebay or www.replacementlaptopkeys.com. If you cannot find a loose key for sale, you may have to purchase a keyboard and take a key from there.
Q: I have a Key or Keys that are not working. Will this fix them?
A: This video is a tutorial on how to replace a key. If your keys are not working but are not mechanically broken, troubleshoot them as seen here; • How To Fix Troubleshoo... .
Q: The hinge clip came apart into two pieces. How can I reassemble?
A: They fit together with a small plastic pin on the left and right of the inner clip. These fit into holes on the outer clip. To see exactly how the inner clip sits in the outer clip, remove another key cap and copy the clip under it.
Q: The rubber spring came off. How do I reattach it?
A: There isn't really a good way to reattach those. They are not meant to be replaced. Best advice is try to use a small amount of glue. If that does not work, you may have to replace the keyboard.

Hey man, appreciate the video. Checked for updates and restarted the computer as the update instructed. Had the BIOS screen pop up on restart then shut down. Second restart went as normal and the key started to work. Not sure how it happened but I wont argue with the results. Video kept me calm and from breaking anything by trying to rip out the key haphazardly.

To anyone having keyboard issues, just don't give up! A big thanks to PC Monkey. Device Manager did not show up on my version. After a lot of frustration, because my keyboard didn't work, I finally found a random document and cut and pasted the letters to spell DEVICE using my right click menu. Pasting it into the search section, it finally found me the device manager. As suggested, I uninstalled the keyboard then restarted. However, it still didn't work even though the driver had automatically reinstalled. This led me to the comments section, where I saw that others had needed do go through some process twice. So, ever hopeful, I manually reinstalled the driver irrespective of the pre-installation then restarted my computer yet again. After this attempt, it worked! I can now use my keyboard again. Never give up!

Hey, great video! I'm just having a bit of trouble with 2 of my keys on my laptop (q and 8 keys). I'm not too sure whether its a hardware or a software problem but I'm leaning towards hardware since I've already updated all my drivers. I'm finding it difficult to find information on my issue since it seems to be a unique case - my q and 8 keys only work if I am holding down another key. For example, if I press spacebar whilst pressing q it will work, but it won't work when I try to press it on its own. Any suggestions or should I just take it into the computer shop? If your keyboard frequently types the same character either zero or multiple times, then it might not feel broken, but there still might be debris under the key. In that case, you can fix it by opening up the key and cleaning it

Hi. Do you have any thoughts on a brand new Acer Chromebook with a "wonky" feeling spacebar? (It's noisier than the other keys and feels a bit wobbly). It works fine, but it bugs me! Should I just live with it? Thanks!

If its more 'wobbly' that the other ones it either that the Key Cap is not properly fastened to the Retainer Clip or that the Retainer Clip is not properly fastened to the Keyboard. You would have to disassemble and then reassemble correctly

Great video - unfortunately after running updates and removing/reinstalling keyboard driver - the Z 4 $ keys on my LG Gram laptop are intermittent and th E is often intermittent, delayed or double displays (causing misspellings). After verifying it wasn't gunk under the keys (I removed them) I took it to Micro-center with a replacement keyboard I bought on Amaon but they said I need one that was already attached to the top/keyboard deck so it would be $500 to replace it (350 parts / 150 labor) and that may not be the issue. They said it could be the OS or the motherboard. Such a pain to use th on-screen keyboard or a USB keyboard. QUESTION> I'm now considering remaping the problem keys to the [ ] \ keys that I nevre used - but am not sure that's possible. Any thougts/suggstions?

Thanks for the helpful video on these newer style keyboards! I have determined it is not mechanical or software, but the “I” key is still not working on Lenovo S340. No, most likely removing the rubber spring is not needed and those are not designed to be removed and reinstalled anyway. If reseating the keyboard ribbon cable at both ends does not help, then you most likely need to replace the keyboard.

All models will use different keys. Some models even use different retainer clips from each other :( I usually get my keys on Ebay or www.replacementlaptopkeys.com. If you cannot find a loose key for sale, you may have to purchase a keyboard and take a key from there.

Anything for mods switching your B N and M keys off?? That’s what happened to me while playing Valhiem answers and Risk of Rain 2 modded and the issue persisted after closing the games.

I've got a legit sticky A key.. in games when strafing right and during typing when sending messages.. ive taken it apart and cleaned it seems fine. its a blackwidow. over 100 bucks here.. dang!

Nice video. Speaks clearly and does not waste time. When you go through all of the steps (here, and maybe a few others) and everything checks out, if you decide to replace the keyboard, be certain "to look up the disassembly video for your exact model" before (again, before) you order the replacement board! I had installed an SSD a couple of years earlier in this Asus F555UA and made decent photos, so I thought I knew what to expect. When I opened it up, what was not obvious in my old photos was that there were perhaps 80-100 plastic rivets holding it to the frame, each of which needed to be removed. Afterwards, the new keyboard would have needed to be reattached (glued) at each of those points. Twenty dollars ($20.00) in parts and a thousand dollars worth of my time. It works great on my desk with a USB keyboard. By the way, my new HP, with lighted keyboard, works fine on my lap.

Jamine - I have an Acer Aspire 7441G and I was taking it apart so as to handle the headphone jack. When taking the keyboard out I lifted the black clip holding the keyboard connecting lead too enthusiastically and is snapped out and I don't see how to get it back in place. Can I just tale the connecting lead in place and the tape to plastic clip on top to hold it? Thanks, Carter PS: You explain things the clearest of any of the KZbin sites I've seen.

Hey there thank you for providing this info. My computer is performing all functions fine but when I try to type anything the equal sign seems to type by itself continuously. I haven't spilled any liquids on it or anything other than normal use, it just started all of a sudden. I popped the key top off, blew out any dust that may have accumulated in it but it's still doing it. Can you help?

If, after all these steps, you cannot fix your issue, and reseating the keyboard didnt work, consider replacing your keyboard.

Hello, some keys like 2 and some function keys are not working (sometimes they work but sometimes they don't) in my laptop keyboard, but it doesn't seem to work in multiple operating systems I have like Windows And Fedora Linux, so can it be a driver issue because I think it can't be right because there can't be faulty drivers on multiple operating systems? My model of laptop is: hp 15da 0434tx, I have the keyboard attached to my laptop case and is not able to be taken out! Is buying the external keyboard the only option ?

Using an external keyboard will tell us if its an issue related to the computer or the keyboard. If the external keyboard fully works, then the problem is most likely OS or hardware related. If the external keyboard does not work, then your looking at something more serious.

Hey, I have a lenovo Yoga touchscreen. My keys don't feel like they're broken or sticky apart from the mouse which does feel a little sticky. We've rebooted the laptop and installed drivers/new windows but the keys are still not working. It's a few keys that aren't working. In the past I've restarted the laptop and they would start working again but now they've totally stopped. The T, Y, left shift and caps lock are currently faulty.. please tell me what to do?

I've got just one troublesome key. It works, but sometimes will need 2 or even three punches. I haven't pulled it off yet, but feel like it just needs cleaning? What do you use to clean around that little mechanism?

After removing a key cap, I use a rag and or a old tooth brush with a isopropyl alcohol alcohol. It cleans but dries fast. You can see an example of that here; amzn.to/3cDLay7

Hope you can help me, or tell me what might be wrong: So i unplugged various keys for cleaning, when plugged back on some of them dont work, including the Escape and Space button. The mechanics seems fine, and the components are there. Yet doesn't work. Ive tried re-installing keyboard driver, turned off "sticky" buttons, and re-inserted the respective keys various times. Also, some keys seems less responsive. Is it possible that ive cut a wire or so? Its a HP 14s-fq1035no 14" FHD.

Most likely, you didnt damage the keyboard or wires by simply removing and reinstalling keys. However, you can try unplugging the keyboard ribbon cable and then plugging it back in to make sure it didnt become loose
