@NikTelio4 жыл бұрын
Hi, using this method is a little saver because the heat is concentrated near the bga area and the other electronic components get not damaged by the heat, if you use a reflow oven then you put stress on all electronic parts and it is a little risky, that said, all components will likely survive this procedure if you stay within the normal temps, max 230~c for max 20 seconds and finish the whole procedure within 5 minutes when reaching the liquid temp do not touch-bump-move the board or any component, if you do then you will regret it :)

Heat guns and soldering fans kind of cost noticable for my wallet money too so I kind of want to know it's actually a GPU chip soldering that is broken before I buy it :') Or is it possible to reflow a memory withoout cooking it too? Also is it ok to use a construction heat gun? It's minimum temperature is 300C I'm afraid to overbake it (but they are cheaper and are a lot more easy to find around here)...
@NikTelio4 жыл бұрын
Hello, all the electronic components on the pcb are soldered the same way, they place them on the pcb and then they put the pcb in the oven and heat it up to 250 Celsius. This means you can reflow everything but precise temperatures needed. Usually the gpu chip gets damaged because of the high operating temperatures but sometimes a vram can fail and the solution is reflow (a cheap solution you can try at home without expensive tools or spareparts). In the video i'm using a cheap heatgun and a thermometer to be sure i do not exceed the temperature limits and fry the chip.

Hello, to reflow a laptop gpu use a 1000watt heatgun or the low setting on your heatgun, you can use the same method to reflow bga chips and smd components (in the video you see the leadfree soldering profile, for leaded solder the max temp is ~210C), monitoring the temperature is important, use some no clean flux if you have, it helps the soldering process.
@nickk98225 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your reply. I made it work using the 1800w gun and aluminium foil to cover other part of the board. I started the heatgun and hover over approx. 15cms from the GPU chip for 1 minute and then moved little close to the board for another 2 minutes and then against brought up and kept for 1 more minute. The heat gun was set to low mode ~400 deg cel. mode. After the process the whole motherboard was so hot that I could not touch it.

Hello I have few questions in case you respond to them. I was thinking about doing this stuff for free to friends and people in general cause there is much need for this stuff at my place so I got myself a cheap air solder station (well I plan using it in other things as well). Can it replace heat gun? I believe it can but asking never hurts, also how "permanent" these repairs are? I see some people saying that reflowing leads you nowhere cause GPU usually dies within few months of use again. Is this correct in your case?
@NikTelio5 жыл бұрын
Hello, the heatgun that i'm using in the video is 2000 watts, if you want to reflow bga chips on laptops then a 1000 watt heatgun will do but for graphics cards like the one in the video you need more power to do the reflow right, is not enough to heat only the chip, you must heat the pcb around the chip so the chip and pcb have about the same temperature when the solder melts, this is important. A reflow or reballing can last about a few months or many years, since we do not know if the bga or the chip itself is problematic we can not predict how long the repair will last, it is important that you reduce as much as you can the thermal stress of the bga chip you repaired to help the repair last longer, for example if you reflow a laptop that uses thermal pad on the chip, it is best to remove that pad and use a copper pad with some thermal paste. Not all chips are the same and i mean some of them have a cheap design and repairing them will not help, they will fail again soon, that sometimes this repairs doesn't work does not mean that the repair itself isn't working but there are many factors that most people don't know, i suggest you try it your self and find out for sure if the reflow works (use always flux, the amtech 559 flux is a good one, and don't buy it on ebay, it will be fake)

560ti are bad designed chips in my opinion, let me explain, there is the gpu and on it is thermal paste and on it is a metal heatspeader which is glued on the gpu chip and on the heatspreader you apply your thermal paste so you can mound the cooler :/ you can only change your paste but not the one between the spreader and the gpu which is likely old and dry.

Hi, for this method to be reliable you must reach ~230c because the solder melts at 220c, you probably did not reach this temp and it failed again, if you tried to clean the flux with alcohol then probably the alcohol got under the chip and to get it out you must use compressed air, but i'm worried because you tested the graphics card while probably alcohol was still under the chip and this could have created a short circuit and damaged the chip, try to blow compressed air under the chip to remove the alcohol, perhaps you are lucky and it will work again.
