cool vid, thanks. gonna have to try this out on my 2000 jetta. any ideas on how to fix possible "troubled" light codes? my radiator hose broke once and the nearest shop was a ghetto gas station which did a crap job on it because the airbag and front brake light turned on my dash after job was done, not to mention speedometer/odometer was non functional. speedo works "ok" right now, but all others problems still exist. i took it back to have them fix it, and they had no idea what was going on, which then caused the speedo/odo failure.

One question, when I tried to tighten the speed sensor (clockwise) it won't tighten it'd just keep turning, it's that normal or it has to stop at some point when tightening it clockwise.

2002 jetta wont go higher than 20mph if i rev it up to high rpms it shifts then goes faster than 20 mph any advice. sometimes it works great no issues when it wants to. thanks

I was doing axles on my 1.8 and notice my turbo blanket all messed up, I ripped the turbo blanket only to find out I ripped part of my Speedo sensor out! It was only that top part that needed replacing but I went crazy trying to figure it out till I saw half of the sensor hanging lol

Its on the transmission on top. Look for where the axle connect too but on top

Looks like that sits on top of the transmission? I always wondered where it was, and now you've shown me that it's missing. If it wasn't, it would have been obvious during the transmission swap.

Usually from loose connectors on the back of the cluster

On the gear box. Remove the wheel and look near the shaft then look left and up a little....will see the cable. Follow it. Don't waste time looking in engine bay. Wheel off and it's easy

Thanks to your video, I found the VSS, but I cannot get it out. It just spins around, and does not unscrew like yours does. Is there a bolt holding it down as in other vehicles, or from your video it looks like there may be a nut that screws the bottom part of it into the tranny.It is hard to see, and I cannot find anything. My speedometer and odometer are not working,or rather work every so often for a little while. I hope your fix is all it needs, but I still may need to remove it to replace.

Just found it on my 2008 Jetta City. Remove the air cleaner on the drivers side off engine compartment. Look down from the brake resevoir and to the left on top of the transmission. Should see a metallic looking bag thingy. Sensor is in there. Would have put a picture but no option for it....🙂.......Also after I replaced the speed sensor the problem stayed.....I took it all apart again to check I did it right and then found there is also a fuse for it and it was blown.....replaced fuse....... all well.....origional sensor must have shorted.

on my 2000 golf the speedo doesn't work nor dose the odometer and the Chek engine light is on. I had it looked at and was told the senser are sending out the correct voltage and the problem was most likely in the dash cluster. but when I put a computer on it I'm being told it's a speed sensor ground fault

+Al Dyson they get corroded and give the same issue. Id try the spedo sensor on the trans first. Those clusters are part of the ecm

+Cody the Car Guy a new cluster programed is around 700 bucks so that's why I am thinking to do the speed sensor first even though my micanic thinks it's ok. and he's not sher if a used cluster will work . he's not a vw guy

+Al Dyson thats why i said check the sensor first. Heck you can buy the whole cluster,key,ecm and switch for a few hundred on ebay. Compared to 700 geeze deff try a new speedo sensor first. Never had a cluster go bad in my vdubs i own 4 now when building race cars its a little diff lol

I have a 99 Jetta VR6 and the speedo gets stuck after about 40 MPH. It'll drop back down after I stop or slow down and it works fine as long as I keep it under 40. what would cause this?

Nick Squires You can have something in the cluster messed up or the sensor can be bad and not able to send signal showing past 40 , those sensors are notorious for getting corrosion which can make it do what your describing.

2002 VW Jetta automatic transmission problem. Took my car in to have the altenator to be replaced and the guy sent it back to me not shifting out of first or second. Car goes 40 and is putting out 3000rpm. At one other time the guy worked on my car this happened then and he said it was a blown shifting sensor...he changed it and it worked fine. I really don't believe the transmission is bad. I think the guy is lying to me this time around.

Darcy Collins well he could have hit a sensor plug , ive had a Honda come to the shop where another shop changed a thermostat and they messed up a plug and the Honda wouldn't shift right. What motor is in yours?
