I think it's incredible that a channel dedicated to septic tanks has almost 20k followers. Well done.

I am a certified NAWT septic inspector and can tell you that one of the primary reasons drain fields fail is because of a lack of oxygen (anaerobic environment) in the drain field. Worms will not survive in your drain field because there is no oxygen. It is also very doubtful that they could eat through the sludge that is a thick, slimy coating (called biomat) that is clogging your drain field. The biomat is covered in wastewater so the worms would need to somehow move down through the wastewater and digest the biomat while not getting any oxygen.

There shouldn't be an anaerobic environment in the drain field... If you keep things running well, the worms should be fine.

4:38 "How do drain field worms work?" Really great. They thrive on all of the bleach, toilet cleaners (acids), and other cleaning products dumped into the septic system on a daily or semi-daily basis and which caused the problem to begin with, namely killed the organisms that were eating up the solid wastes in the septic tank. BTW worms are organisms too. The fundamental problem is that people who live in a home served by a septic tank and drain field/seepage pit can't see underground and don't know or care what needs to be done in regard to putting only "quality" wastes down the drain into the waste system (no bleach etc.). Such people (I am just as guilty in this) act exactly as if they are on a municipal sewer system.

Water jetting does not work as illustrated. The jet shoots *backwards* not forward. So it does not compact the grease/sludge

Here in Alaska where the mean annual temperature is just above freezing, a drain field typically lasts 40 years, and then needs to be replaced.

Where does the worm poop go? Unfortunately, it does NOT work the way it's illustrated here. Whatever the worms eat, just gets pooped right back out. There isn't any reduction in waste. Now if they said the worms were there to aerate the clogs and the drain field soil, I would believe that. But the waste in the tank will not decrease because of the worms.

Surely it would take months for the worms to get into the drain-field part of the system and then clear it.

So the lesson here, is get your tank pumped regularly every 3-5 yrs depending on how many people live there. And it would take several gallons of bleach at one dumping to have any kind of permanent affect on anaerobic bacteria. I've never heard of "drainage worms" only red wigglers that live in compost.
@bradreading7122

Thank you! This is exactly right. Ive owned and operated a septic tank pumping business for 35 years and you would not believe how many people call me AFTER its too late. If they just would have pumped the tank on the health dept. recommended schedule of 3 to 5 years they would never have had a problem.

@@bradreading7122I have a question if you don't mind answering. I'm noticing a bright green patch of grass where In assuming it's the drain field. Today I see mushroom growing in spots in the patch. Is this indicative of a leak?
@donhardy9248
@donhardy9248 Жыл бұрын
@@jacifrankie9893 Not necessarily. Mushrooms need moisture, and while a clogged leach field can lead to excessive moisture, even a properly functioning field provides enough percolation for greener grass and mushrooms.

Main reason drainage fields fail is because ground water levels rise above the pipes and instead of waste water seeping out into the soils the ground water seeps into your tank.

Worms are a scam considering that the chlorine etc. in the contaminated wastes in the clogged drain field pipes is poison to them. Jetting may help if the jet water (plus extra water) is allowed to flush wastes back out of the pipes and the wastes to be collected and disposed of. Unfortunately, that kind of operation is not the simplest to arrange, tkes time, and thus is costly and may not be done thoroughly (contractors rush to "complete" the job). Also, the soil around the drain field pipes is contaminated with chlorine etc. also.

I got so excited then I seen other information stating this is a scam. First of all, worms can’t breath in water. Second of all they can’t get into the drain field. Ugh.

You have an excellent point there!!! I have been in my house since 1967, never any problems until about 8 years ago. Got a new system at the cost of thousands of dollars and about 5 years and we start having problems. The person that installed it doesn’t appear to know anything to do except the remedy that costs thousands of dollars. Two old people have no idea what to do other than sign the checks. A real bummer!
