Ok, I played my first 18 holes and before every shot I made sure I had a intermediate target that I picked up from watching your videos. I took two or three practice swings swiping forward and back. I struggled with falling back on my trail foot and fought that swing fault on the next shot visualizing I was staying with the shot and “throwing the club to the right”. I broke 80 the first time in my life! I’m a 22 handicapper. I putted like I was on the Tour on the front 9. No 3 putts! Back 9, I had several 3 putts. Hit my ball from the tee in the water on 18. Still scored well on that hole.

Shawn, I was going to call you today and ask this very question. Yesterday, I discovered that for me squaring the face at impact is difficult. In fact, I found myself delisting my driver. I already use a grip similar to Savy so I rolled the wrist at the start of the downswing now at impact the face is square and I swing up and through. I loved the sound of a square hit. In this video, you mention that my discovery is fine. Today, I am going to work with the clubface at address as I believe it will free from thinking during the swing. I have heard you a thousand times talk about grip to clubface but it sink in until I saw the baseball analogy.

Every time I get in a “golf funk” I always find a gem over at WIG! Magic aha moment for me was at the 7:00 mark. Close the face THEN grip the club! I would take a strong grip then try and convince myself it was closed by rotating the wrists. Duh!

Hi Shawn, this is a brilliant piece of advice. I have a tendency to leave my club face open and have to consciously bow my wrist to stop the push to right arld/or a weak fade. This is a very timely video for me. The other day a guy at the driving range told me my face was wide open at the top of my back swing. So I took the club back slowing, paused at the top, and noticed left wrist (I am right handed) was very cupped. In order to flattened my left wrist at the top of the back swing I had to use a very weak grip. Once I made the adjustment I was hitting the ball much higher, and straighter. I always thought a strong grip helped prevent slicing.

I used to have a strong grip and a square club face with a neutral setup. Used to hook all irons and club would turn over so hard I couldn’t hit woods. Very frustrating. You should see the strange looks I get on the tee box when I turn that driver face in 30 degrees or so at address. When I close the face at address I then rotate my upper body to get behind the ball and square the club face to the target. As long as I focus on the target I hit a bomb down the fairway. If I make the ball the target it will hook off the planet. You have to focus on cutting that blade of grass behind the ball and not hitting the ball.

If I use the strong grip with square clubface i have more fat shots n hooks. Hard to explain but nobody has ever explained it like you have. Shawn just trying to understand this set-up which the order to do correctly can get confusing. When you are applying your strong grip are you both turning your clubface a little closed then taking your strong grip as well. When you take your grip like this do you also have your lead hand in a strong position (3x knuckles showing). Also when you then put the clubface behing the ball are you doing this with the clubface square to target line or are you setting up with the clubface a little closed as you see it at address. I am a little confused by how to apply this correctly to my address pisition so that i can just have a hammer action without any deliberate forearm or wrist rotation into impact...just having a lead hand hinging & unhinging action (hammering up & down but on a tilted plane) ?

Surely the same doesn't apply to driver as the impact is different to irons - there's little to no lag and you're hitting up on the ball, so driver could be overtaking the hands. In which case that closed face becomes super closed dead left.
@golflessons Жыл бұрын
Not necessarily! Guys like Joakin Niemann and Tony Finau have a lot of shaft lean and are more through the ball with the driver; it all depends on the person; some need more closed than irons because they are hitting more up on the ball and some less because of the way you described; You deliver your action to the target and then you see how it flies and make your adjustments from that.

I found with driver that the best way to git rid of my slice was not to cock the wrist up (like a gun cock), but to bend the wrist back (imagine the first part of a slapping motion) along with a closed club face at take away. Yes, this leads to a driver with a closed club face pointing up at the sky, but it really forces me to come inside on the way down, turn hard and unload my wrist through the hitting area (imagine the second part of a slapping motion). It also gives me a much better feeling of where the club face is on the way down as I know it's gone straight back and all I have to do if bring it straight through. If I try this with shorter clubs then I can pull or hook it right because they are shorter and I have to hit from the inside by quite a considerable margin, so I generally stick the the usual wrist cock.

with the position of the hands, very strong grip, .....how does the "snuff box" get in position at the top of backswing. the snuff box flex is not parallel with the target line with the strong grip. @louislazarus92532 жыл бұрын
Another great video that will work for many golfers. However, if this method was really the BEST way to hit a golf ball, every single pro would have an ultra strong grip as you suggest. So, obviously since these guys earn their living by hitting golf balls to small targets, they want the best odds that they can get and it's really not with such a strong grip. Your cutting dandelions example isn't really the way many pros hit the ball. They don't swing horizontally through the impact zone. The direction of the golf swing for them is down with the arms and around with the body. The direction of force applied to the golf ball comes from up to down as the body rotates around. That's why when we look at stop action photos we see the golf shaft DROOP. The direction of the golf ball is determined by the face as it approaches from open to square to closed SOMEWHERE through the impact zone. Understanding D-plane is a very interesting topic and that's why I am writing to you. I think your viewers would appreciate your explanation of "D-plane" in the manner you explain everything else. You will make it INTERESTING and not quite so scientific. That's a good thing. I'm positive you're familiar with this subject. It's really all about where the "sweet spot" on the club face is pointing during impact and how most golfers hit the ball to the right because they don't understand what is really going on. On a proper iron shot, the face of the club is actually pointing a bit right of the target line and it is only square on the target side of the ball where the divot begins. Again, I really hope you do a video on this subject as you will make this understandable for most golfers. Again, great video. I'm not criticizing at all, just trying to point out some other views on the golf swing.

Hi Shawn, love your work as usual. What’s your thought of Adam Scott? 100% neutral grip, how is he able to hit the ball so straight ? Obviously everyone’s different, I had a teacher give me him as an example and although I still play with a strong grip I couldn’t argue with his example. 👍
@golflessons3 жыл бұрын
I use Adam Scott as the example of what not to do with the grip; his right hand is what I don’t like as it does not stay on the club solidly and he looses some consistency there. Like Colin Morikawa’s right hand; ends up grasping like a baseball bat at the end of the swing. Brooks Koepka is another example of guys who have a string right hand with neutral left that cause a bow in the wrist at the top of the backswing; they have a square it somehow to get access to deliver to the target. THERE ARE FAR MORE STRONG GRIPS ON TOUR THAN WEAK OR NEUTRAL ONES. Strong grips are not for everyone btw, but definitely for the majority of golfers as we spend our days helping golfers with slices who are not strong enough or athletic enough to square the club with the bow of the wrists! 😝😝The strong grip is far more anatomically sound as well so see “most important video on grip ever shawn clement” as well as “best video on grip ever shawn clement” which has the best info for the trail hand that will keep your “grip club” relationship super secure and sound like your hands were duct taped to the club! So bottom line, after you see those videos, see “predict solid contact and direction shawn clement” and “how to put the ball in the way of your swing shawn clement” and see what grip-club relation works best for you. I am not a fan of teaching a grip or position because of “this is how so and so does it” when they don’t even know what works or would work for you DYNAMICALLY during the swing.

Hi Shawn! I appreciate the logic behind the video - truly what we should strive for as far as feel and visualization goes. But I do get these ODD open (or closed) faces in between shots - USING THE SAME GRIP (so I did not change my club face/grip relationship). My normal face would be about 1 degree open or closed - but I do get the occassional 5 to 6 degrees from time to time. My path isn't as erratic as long as I employ a 3/10 effort level - but the face is the issue. How do you control a degree or two on the club face? I don't know how obvious it is to the naked eye - but I would think that it is so miniscule that a swing video alone will not even show it.

YOU DON’T EVER WANT TO CONTROL THE CLUB FACE DURING THE SWING EVER. You want to allow the weight ofnthe club release your anatomy in the direction you want to start the ball; as you stay with the direction, you are going to anchor that release nicely because the head stays back as you stay with that direction. You just need to be clear about the FEEL OF THE RELEASE. So go to our premium channel at www.wisdomingolfpremijm.com and SEE “lead hand release”, “trail hand release”, “release fine tuning,” and “snap release polish” and then after that, you want to see “turbo charge the lead hand release” and “turbo charge the trail hand release”

You bet! This is the proper anatomical alignment to deliver through the ball, along the ground and into the direction of the target.
@JCelly583 жыл бұрын
Shawn, question for you... if at address you stand neutral, place your club head on the ground behind the ball, square the face to the target and then grip the club strong, maintain your neutral posture, will that not produce the same result? That's my set up .Will try yours now but for some reason I feel it's the same thing. Is it???
@golflessons3 жыл бұрын
The transition from backswing through and into downswing could make it the same; would need to see! 😀👍 Bottom line, if you whip the club into the direction you want the ball to start, and the ball does it’s thing and flies the way you want it to, then all is well. See “how to put the ball in the way of the swing shawn clement golf wrx”

So I tried to put this into practice and 7 out of 10 times I ended up "over drawing" the shot and ended up on the left side of the green (or worse). Is there a way I can "calibrate" how closed I need to make my clubface, perhaps on the range? Or is it just a matter of trial and error? I've never really had a good release, primarily because the more I "hinge" my wrist, the more I feel I lose my "connectedness" to the hitting area.

Shawn - for those who have strong grip like myself does your technique of closing the face work the same way? Will it accentuate my draw which can become a strong duck hook? Regards, JJ
@golflessons4 жыл бұрын
Hey JJ! If you are not having issues with squaring the club and can hit draws and low stingers at will, then you have no issues. If you feel that your shots are glancey and come off the face with lacklustre compression, then consider what you see in this video and see also “predict solid contact and direction shawn clement” and “fencing for power shawn clement”

Do I have to close the face more the longer the club gets?
@golflessons3 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily; some woods are draw biased or have more torque in the shafts that make the flight a bit different than the irons; the key is to deliver into the picture and see how it flies and then make adjustments IF NEED BE. Does this apply to drivers and woods as well?
@golflessons3 жыл бұрын
Yes! many have to close the face more with the driver; distance to ball is also very key with the driver as the club shaft is much longer and the hands must be farther from the body. Our premium channel has so much to help in this department at www.wisdomingolfpremium.com (only $9.95) with important videos such as “great driver nugget” and “diagonal stance series” and “the throwing series” where we throw clubs of all the different lengths including the driver and longer…and that is just the tip of the iceberg!

Ok so just to confirm (I know I shouldn’t need to but). I should strengthen my grip until the face is closed at impact even if that means I feel uncomfortable at address with 4 knuckles showing? I should not Just try and bring the club round more during my down swing using my current 3 knuckle grip ?
@golflessons4 жыл бұрын
To try and manually close the face during the swing means something is out of place; if you already have a 3 knuckle grip, this could be you getting ahead of the ball on the downswing and or not understanding the way the club releases the hands through the ball and towards the target. You should get on our premium channel for just $9.95 per month (no contracts) at www.wisdomingolfpremium.com and check out “lead hand release”, “trail hand release”, “release fine tuning” and “snap release polish” videos to start; then see “arc-blur unstoppable momentum” series to begin to understand how the head staying behind the ball has everything to do with your ability to stay with the direction you want to start the ball on. Other videos on that would be “target confirmation series”

When i started i played up to hs in baseball and wanted to have the club pointing towards the target ie hands ahead. The swing thought i used and was taught it: the grip of the club pointing to the ground in the downswing and it is what made me able to golf well. also the towel trick so my arm never left my body.

Hey Luke! The question is: WHICH ONE MAKES ANATOMICAL SENSE AND RELATES TO DELIVERING A GOLF BALL INTO A FLIGHT PLAN?😝😝😎😎
@golflessons2 жыл бұрын
YOU ARE THINKING STATICALLY!! There is no timing involved here as you are planning to deliver a whipping or slinging action into a flight plan and the set up you have allows you to deliver OUT THERE and not DOWN THERE AT THE STUPID BALL.
@golflessons2 жыл бұрын
When you played baseball, did you not plan on delivering the ball into the part of the field you needed to? This is what gave you the ability to judge what ball fits from the pitcher! Your body part thinking in golf will only distract you from the target and the 2 things you listed happen all by themselves when you deliver into the direction of the target. Try putting those towels under your arm pits in baseball…you will get some very crazy looks my friend!
