FINALLY A VIDEO THAT SAVED ME. I literally bought a brand new machine and my thread kept breaking so I looked at the needle to see if it was hitting anything and it was hitting the bobbin holder thing. So I saw you sanding and I’m like bet , grabbed my sand paper and sanded it down and now my thread doesn’t break ! Thank you for this

I have to say thank you so much for this video!! This was the only video I saw that said anything about the needle plate causing the thread breakage. I had a brand new machine and it just happened to have a small burr on the plate. I was on the verge of returning the machine and saying it was garbage, but a little piece of sand paper and everything works like a dream. Thank you so much for your videos. You are awesome. Living in rural Arizona we don't have a repair shop unless we drive 2 hours. Thank you!!!😊

Thank you so much. I'm just getting back into sewing and thought that somehow I had forgot how to use a sewing machine. After watching your video I took a look at the plate and the presser foot and noticed roughness. Got some 200 sandpaper to smooth it out and some 2,000 sandpaper to polish it and now I'm back in action and feeling more confident about my ability to use the sewing machine. :) :) :)

Thank you sooooo much! My machine kept breaking thread during the end of a sewing class. During that class, I used a seam tape to hold two pieces of fabric together until I stitched it together. That’s when the problem of constantly breaking thread started to be apparent. I inspected the needle and it was all gummed up with sticky stuff from the tape. I took my machine home and found your video. Followed your instructions and although I did not have needle strikes anywhere on the plate or the bobbin tray, I did have that gummy glue from the tape in the same area of the bobbin tray you said should be smooth to the touch. I also inspected the plate closely and noticed a stubborn piece of sticky glue in the area that you sanded. I even had sticky stuff underneath the presser foot which probably were working against my feed dogs. So I cleaned it all off really good with a cotton ball and alcohol until all the gummed up sticky stuff was gone and all areas were silky smooth to the touch. I put the machine back together, tested it and BOOM! Perfect stitches with zero broken thread. Thanks again!

Thank you so much, it was really frustrating to sit to sew and see your thread giving up every time. Infact I started feeling spooky about it that the thread was going in there but coming up broken 💔. It was so annoying that I thought of giving up my sewing project for the day. And your video helped me. Because I had figured out that it's this rough edge on the footer but I never knew it was a needle strike that caused it in first place. And I also din't know how to repair it infact I thought of buying one more footer and check whether it has the same issue. Sewing is fun only when it doesn't trouble.❤

Your videos are all so helpful. It would be great to know if you are still commenting on your posts or you are still available on here to help.I just got back into wanting to sew and all of a sudden I have been gifted 3 sewing machines that all need a little tuning up or fixing but I'm sure nothing major. I just dont want to make anything worse. It's been many years since I was constantly on a sewing maching. I use to sew on a Singer 301 but that sewing machine was damaged in flood and I just was afraid to try to keep and use it after water damage. So now, I have a Singer185j, a Monarch DeLuxe that seems like so far, I will need to use a walking pressure foot to sew with since I cant get dog teeth to move back and forth, a Singer Prelude that will occasionally break the top thread , and a Brother LS1520 that I cant seem to fix the thread tension on.

Anybody who is unexperiecend in sewing should be FORCED to watch this, before even getting started. When I made my first attempts in sewing, I had a very fluffy, furry, long haired goat type of fabric. Of course, the fluffs got stuck somewhere between the feed dogs and the needle plate. A bird nest was created, which I couldn‘t see from the top, the fabric didn‘t move any more, the machine started sewing on the spot, which made the bird nest even worse, I started to panic, and forced the fabric through, by pulling it to the back. Result: Bent needle, causing damaged stitch plate, thus: Bent needle shaft, and about 2 yards of thread all over and around the stitch plate, the feed dogs and the bobbin case. On a brand new machine. I obviously learned it the hard way 🙈 which, would I have watched a video like this before, never have happened. Thanks for these very comprehensible and clear explanations. Oh: And whenever you sew fluffy fabric, I highly recommend you put some baking paper between the fabric and the machine.

Sewing Machine Repair Guy Don’t worry, bad experience is a good teacher 😂 When we had to do sewing in school, I wasn’t very successful. The teacher had to teach 26 teenagers aged 13 at a time. There never was any time for any explanation, it consisted basically of „never do this, don’t touch that at all, and do not change anything on the sewing machine!“. I was pretty interested in sewing, but all those warnings scared me off and the machine kind of freaked me out. Especially, when I sewed directly through my finger nail into my finger (here we have another cause for bent and broken needles!). About ten years later, I got my first sewing machine. And ended up totally frustrated, since I had nobody to teach me. And I only got it out about 25 years later, which is 18 months ago. Now thanks to KZbin, I was finally able to chose my own teachers, and have made pretty much progress ever since. Started bag making and quilting, and sewing garments for my dogs (as raincoats and the like). Meanwhile, friends ask ME how to fix problems in sewing. Since I am a big fan of videos, the kind you make them, I am often able to reply. So thank you very much for taking the time and sharing your knowledge, which I appreciate very much. Regards from an old girl from Germany 🇩🇪, home of the famous Pfaff and Dürkopp-Adler

Guilty! I've bent or broken needles due to some sort of carelessness, and also done damage to the needle plate. Plus I've damaged plastic bobbin cases as well. I've never tried using the sandpaper trick (brilliant idea - thank you!) as a temporary fix until I can replace the damaged part but I've used a trick of my own. I have a specialized set of emery boards having 50 grit up to 280 grit. I use them in a similar fashion to smooth out dings in the needle plate as well as bobbin cases. Poor quality needles also can cause thread breakage. I read somewhere (sorry, don't remember where) that if you're having a problem with thread breakage and have eliminated all other possibilities, get a jeweler's loupe or a VERY strong magnifying glass and examine the eye of your needle. I wasn't sure I believed this until I looked for myself. Surprise! You may just discover that the inner edge of the eye is rough - ergo, thread breakage waiting to happen. So throw that one out and put in a new one.

My machine (Brother ST150HDH) is only a few months old and I just checked it for needle strikes. Relieved to find a smooth needle plate and bobbin area. Might be a different story for my older Brother SQ 9185 I have had for several years and remember a few times I did some tugging trying to keep thick fabric from hanging off the table because the weight would drag fabric under the needle so my stitch line was crooked. I am now using a bigger table. I try to be gentle with my new machine because it sews so nicely. I chose to watch this video because I saw a video recently where they said their thread was frequently breaking. I would have guessed bad cheap thread or not threading properly before seeing your video. Definitely tips I want to remember! Edit: I am a great at spelling - but autocorrect is infuriating.

Fashion mate 252. Yesterday my tension was set on 3.5 and everything seemed fine. After sewing, I could pull the material out to cut the thread and not feel like the thread was going to break. But now, with a tension of ONE (1.0), I can barely pull the thread down after threading the machine without feeling like it's going to break. And sometimes it does break when sewing. The only variable that my novice eyes can see are the tension disks. Maybe it's the way I'm adjusting the disks. So yesterday, I feel like I had beginners luck. FRUSTRATING.

Hi there, I have an unusual problem and I don't even know how to describe it. I have an older (but not antique) Eva Midinette 85 Super. My thread keeps being strangled on the part where you do the 'down and then back up' thing, with that thin wire inside that goes up and down depending on depending on whether you're actually sewing or not. I've been trying to fix it all day and am at my wits end. No googling has describes this part even, not even my manual has a word for this part; it's just generalized with the other threading bits :/ I had the machine fixed up by a professional, and it's been running fantastic since... up until today. :(

Why does my thread fray and then snap. I change the needle, I have the correct distance from needle to hook, The stitch locks in the centers,so as far as I know the tensions are correct, There`s no nicks on the hook, neither needle eye, There`s no nicks on the race, Its bonded nylon thread, with a leather needle sewing through two soft pieces of leather, about 1 mm thick folded making 2 mm thickness, Quite often well nearly every time sewing for about 20 stitches the hand wheel jams I look down at my material I see frayed cotton and I cannot pull the material away because the thread has got really tight underneath the material and some times above, I have also notice on a few occasions quite often actually `where the thread is meant to slip over the shuttle then meant to come over through the gap at the back end of the shuttle , My cotton some times is getting jammed there causing the hand wheel to jam, as I use the machine with out the motor, So the thread is getting caught some times jamming the shuttle against the race ,and the thread is fraying and then most of the time snapping,on other occasions, Its a SINGER twin needle 7 class possibly a 7-38 `year it was made 1932 big old thing but only using one needle at the moment, trying to work out the fault the shuttle and hook is similar type to a COWBOY CB 3200 machine, Any advice that comes to mind why the thread is getting jammed in that spot and to why the thread is fraying after sewing 20 stitches,
