Viewers need to understand: this is not just an annoying coolant leak. This manufacturing defect leads to coolant in the rear cylinder, which destroys the block. My brother-in-law experienced this, and the replacement of his ruined engine cost about $8,000. Toyota knew all about this but instructed its dealers to claim they had never seen such a catastrophic failure before. How do I know? The dealer told us.

My rav 4 was diagnosed with this issue last week by the mechanic turns out bolts 1 and 2 had lost all their threads and were just sitting in holes thankfully there was no damage to block because of temporary fix sealant stopping so only needs re-tapping the holes and replacement bolts

If the engine runs and has no isues leave it alone this is only if you pull out the threads when you torque the head down after a head gasket replacement

Before you put the head gasket back down, do you not have to machine the surface and make sure it’s flat and even?
@ultinicoАй бұрын
Not always. You should check, but after overhauling a lot of engines I realized it's not that critical to do that. What is critical is torquing the head down correctly.

kyle weiler there was about 10-12 in the kit. Just be careful when you do this not to let the shavings go down into the engine block.

For me this vehicle had a blown head gasket but then when I went to torque to head back on the bolts pulled and stripped.

@@fernandozuniga3859 Per the Toyota/Scion TSB you skip the outer set of holes on both ends, so just the 6 inner bolt holes. If any of the outer 4 holes are damaged you replace the block.

@2koolforyou885 жыл бұрын
How would it work if 3 of the bolts are stripped and you are working with one of them and the other you need to use the supplied bolts with the kit to secure the plate down I know its shorter does it only use half the threads not reaching the stripped part?
@HowtoAutomotive5 жыл бұрын
2koolforyou88 you could drill out that particular holding slightly larger by hand and with a slightly larger tap and bolt just enough to hold the plate. Do the repair on the bolts in question and then flip the plate around and drill that hole out The one that you Temporary repair to hold the plate.

Because the tread are in a aluminum block and the screw are steel ( harder martial) this happen when the car overheat the block and materials get softer so do not overheat the engine or it will happen

Are the threaded inserts made of steel because I've seen what happens when steel parts and aluminum parts heat at different rates on an engine. IT'S NOT GOOD! Jeep Grand Cherokees notoriously drop valve seats for this reason.
@susanbaltimore18237 жыл бұрын
If youre just losing a little coolant when its fully warmed, many times you can just put longer, fatter bolts in the back side. There's an extra half inch down there. Buy the "2AZFE repair bolts" on eBay. 2.5 hours, cam comes out of the way but you need to have or fashion a long probe to release and hold the tensioner.

I have to make this repair. My 03 Camry is at 187k miles. I'm loosing a steady flow of water when the engine is running only. I'm assuming my bolts are very loose. Did you get the cylinder head to a machine shop or just went with the bolts and reassembled. I havn't taken anything apart to see how bad it is. What else did you do besides use the longer fatter bolts.
@vissevolker9557 жыл бұрын
Re Ebay bolts. I did that method - I used a ratchet with some oil on the bolt. I didn't even have to take the head off, just moved the cam out of the way by taking the t chain off and hanging it out of the way with a pointed bar in the tensioner. Fixed the leaky head in 2 hours for $35.
