Okay I got a tip for anyone running the G29 or maybe anything else . I was not able to float the gears no matter what RPM in my setup . So I went back to Options then picked controls. In controls I scrolled down to H-Shifter Setup. Shifter layout setup I changed mine from simple to Advanced. Below that I changed the Shifter fast split from never to clutch or throttle. I then went back into ATS to drive and bingo I can now float the gears and the gear changes up and down. So I hope if anyone else can't float the gears give this a try to get it to work.

Lol. I have the g27 and I was floating gears way before anyone knew you could on the game. And yup that's the set up I've always had cuz that's the closest to a real truck. Always works. Do that first and you'll be able to float gears you can also flare up the rpms by taping the gas pedal while in N in between shifting. As in your in a gear and need to catch the next one shift to N then tap the gas twice then shift and as the rpms fall the truck will catch the next gear

As a former RL driver you are doing amazing for not having the actual feel of shifting. We mainly go by sound and not RPM indicator but not sure that works the same in game as I use a controller. Like you said in the vid, different trucks ALL have a different groove to em 'cough' Mack 'cough'....lol. When I first started watching I thought you were a RL driver teaching ATS people how to float and when you said you don't know how it is in RL I was shocked. You'd be a champ! I used to always say this to my fellow Mack drivers at the time, the clutch is for First and reverse.....that's it...lol. Side note, I applied for a rear loader Mack ready mix job once and before I got in the truck, the guy evaluating me said " if you use the clutch after first gear, you're fired....simple as that. I laughed at the time since I drove a Mack for years, but I could imagine a new drivers horror in hearing that lol. Edit: @ 18:21 you sure you're not a real driver? lol that tailgate stop is textbook...lol

So true lmao.... macks definitely take some getting used to.... I had a mack that would not shift unless you were between 1800 and 2000 rpms and if the Jake brakes were on it was almost impossible to upshift before the rpms dropped too low.... I've never driven on one of the simulators before, It would be so weird driving without the engine vibrations, rattling dash, air seat swaying sideways or the feel of the shifter and whine of each gear through the shift knob...... there can't be anything like the fear of a missed downshift right before cresting the top of a hill and having to guess which gear based on the speed you're moving while that speed climbs.

At time 10:52 When the front end is bouncing on takeoff from a complete stop, it's normally from a worn clutch or because the mechanic left a fingerprint on the clutch or pressure plate when installing the clutch. Lots of people don't realize how important it is to keep everything perfectly clean when doing a clutch, pressure plate or even disc brakes. Sometimes it can be caused by not using a torque wrench and it causes the flywheel to warp. When you were talking about not being sure what to do below 20 mph, I slow down to almost a stop early shifting down 3 or 4 gears at a time if I am making a fast stop, aiming for a stopping place maybe 25 feet before the white line. Then I don’t stop completely, I let the truck roll very slowly until the stick slips into whatever gear I want to take off in, then press in the clutch and stop the truck. That way you don't get any gear grind putting it into low to take off. I always shift with a gentle pressure on two fingers. Up or down doesn't matter. If you have to pull it out of gear then wait another second or two so the rpm and truck match and the shifter will slip into neutral like butter and into the next gear as well. When teaching others to drive I give them 3 pieces of advice. 1. When doing ANYTHING in a big truck, take your time. Relax. Big trucks don't move fast so don't force them. Slow and smooth. If you break anything you will be out of work until it's fixed or driving a POS loaner truck that everyone hammers on. 2. Always use all the real-estate available even if you don’t think you need it. I hate seeing people pulling trailers over curbs or dropping them into ditches. When running heavy, curbs can pull tires off of beads. Ditches when running heavy can roll your trailer which in turn can roll your tractor. 3. Never back up at an intersection. NEVER. It doesn’t matter if it’s in heavy traffic or not. You never know what the idiot in the 4 wheeler is going to do. They may act like they are going to help you out, but then at the last second they pull up or to the side and you wind up pulling a trailer over them. Pull up where you are supposed to be and let THEM move. Just stay legal and if it comes to it and a cop arrives, he will MAKE THEM move. Ignore the traffic, the cursing and the sign language and STAY IN YOUR TRUCK. You have an air conditioner and a radio. Just relax and wait them out.

I drive trucks for a living but I’m finding it hard to shift without the clutch on ats. Like you say there is no resistance or feedback on the gearstick in the game which is what I rely on to do clutchless shifting in real life. In real life when those revs match up good and you are applying a slight force on the gearstick it’s like the gearshift gets taken or snatched out of your hand into the next gear. Very cool video though, I’ll keep practicing until I get it like you.

IRL you don't fully pull your foot off the gas when floating gears, or most cases the transmission will not let you go into gear, and you'll have to cram it in and damage parts. You only lift off the gas enough to bring the RPM's down around the 1,500 area in most trucks and eaton transmissions, and you'll be able to gently float gears and you push back on the throttle. You never fully take your foot off the gas, you only lift off enough to drop RPM's.

@@Khano94 I like to flip it just before I switch from low to high, it doesn't apply in ATS but IRL the preload of both range & split puts wear on the transmission the longer it's pre-selected. Have seen pics of the internals of a real Eaton where split & range had been pre-selected for too long for too many times between low & high, throwouts were ground halfway off, gears were a mirror sheen (due to the metal wearing off the throwouts) and cracks were developing on bearing ladders on the transmission casing.

A good video as alway. Does anybody make force feed back gearshift? I’m using thrustmaster TH8a gearshift with Logitech g29. While happy with both. Wish steering wheel was bigger. Do wish gear shift had force feed back. Prob not cheap, esp here in Canada. I wish they come out with new game and or somebody basically take ATS and do new game with better Physics and force feed back features. Truck slide on payment. Real weather conditions. Real maintenance, (Oil change etc) and if you miss maintenance, it can have real physical effect on all your truck. Real engine Physics/HP/torque, missing too many oil changes would reduce Power cause issue. Break downs, over heating engine/brakes and turbo should all happen. They should also have full truck garage where do maintenance and upgrades. Few times been loaded over 100,000 lb or more and got stuck on off ramp. In Bo low and still could NOT get the truck too move. Which was pure bullshit. Consider my Kenny was setup up heavily loads, full Eaton 18 speed Tranny and Cat 625 HP engine. But ya really Long for good truck game that has real Physics and you can actually take damage ti engine/pistons/turbo when you don’t do proper maintenance. Which include doing oil changes and grease up and what not. And missing maintenance can have consequences like real life. Yeah the dev need to hire REAL IRL truckers. Good video though. I need also try this more and learning how float gears better. But thanks man. Maybe one day they actually do ATS2 with newer game engine and hopefully updated physics/sounds and graphic. Would love see ATS with path tracing. But thanks for Video man. Are you still using same engine sound mod? Sound fairly good. Most sound mods I tried all sound like ripped/copied from KZbin or from garbage truck. RL Cummings/Cat engine both sound different imo. As somebody grew up on farm, we had farmer with grain bin near by, I got use hearing his big truck on our road and got ride with him few times. But good video man. -- Rant warning lol - Engine and turbo sound for default game are Soooo Horrible imo. They need go actually record real audio of Cat engine sounds/ Cumming etc and Volvo engine sounds. It’s Strange Pete with Cat engine sound different then in Kenny. While their would be slight changes of sounds. It still should sound like a CAT or cumming imo. WHY hasn’t somebody who actually drive trucks /and or work on these engine actually and done ACTUALLY recorded IRL engine sounds using High quality Mic (blu Yeti etc or better) I swear almost 90% sound/engine sound mods are all Copied from same dam sound, like its from Garbage truck or copied off KZbin video. You should PLEASE do shout on one your streams out For ATS fan/ Truck mechanic/somebody too ask him/her please go record actual engines sounds of different engines. None this BS copying found sounds off the web. Ask for somebody that has access to IRL engine sounds. Get actual REAL life recording these engine sounds with laptop and decent mic. AND/Or get the ATS community to bug ATS devs to go do REAL IRL engine sound recording please, then offer it as DLC. Id before happy pay for the Sound pack DLC if ment getting better IRL sound recording. (Cats/Cummins etc) Almost tempted do this myself. But I’ve never made mod or have working laptop, though I do have good Blu Yeti Mic. And I was part of indie dev team, they hired me as tech guy/moderator. Helped them for about 2 yrs, opened my eyes to game development. I wish still lived on farm cuz I could have asked our Neighbour when was not busy, if could record some sound recording of some his different trucks he owned.

What graphics mod are you using? It looks super cool! And is your camera in game "following" your head. I noticed that if you looked right the camera in game also looked right.

I just clutch in on half shifts because the instant gear change messes with the immersion. In reality it would air shift the same but in ats its just instant and I can't stand it.
