Great video. Just a few fine points not mentioned: turn off spa at breaker before draining, back flush jets with fresh water hose to push out residual old water, unscrew drain plug in cabinet to get old water from lowermost plumbing, spray down shell with fresh water to remove chemical film. It’s hard to make a video and include all the little steps but they are important too

Once drained, fill up a few inches just enough to use the pump to drain again. So pipe clean run for 30 min or so. Drain.... re fill agian a few inches then drain again. Finally re fill. done.

Theoretically after draining with sump pump there is still residual water in the plumbing, correct? Will this water containing the cleaning product effect the new water being added?

You are correct. There are segments of hose below the lowest ports which will not drain with a sump pump. After refilling a few inches I run the sump pump again to get out this stale water with concentrated purge chemicals. Before that step I also rinse the shell surface with fresh water - just wiping it like he did only spreads the residue into a thin film. This process is only done every 3-4 months so better to take a few extra minutes and do it right

Shouldn’t you wait to put chlorine in once the tub gets up to required temp(90 degrees F)?

That is somewhat the case. A couple of ways to alleviate this, one is to run the hose through the jets as the water drains, this rinses out any cleaning solution or the more effective solution is that you could purchase a wet and dry vacuum and vacuum the jets to maximise how much water you remove. Hope this helps!

Most spas also have a drain cap someplace inside the cabinet. This is a slow but effective way to drain the pipes located lower in the plumbing

@@drdrew3 drain plugs are the worst and tend to break after so many screw on/off. I'd avoid drain plug. But that's just me.

i got told to use the chlorine shock treatment and add the filter back only when the pool reaches a certain temperature 30 degrees is that correct ? also when the hot tub is refilled and turned back on it goes through a purge cycle is that just a case of turning on the jets ? thanks great video btw

Purge cycle is designed to prevent air lock by flushing air from the system that was introduced during the water fill. You can shock before the water is warm as he did - you are just trying to quickly establish a chlorine reserve which is going to degrade each day regardless of the water temperature

Hello May, either way is good we just prefer to go through the filter housing as a rule. But don't worry both ways will work and won't do any harm to your tub!

Hi there, when draining a hot tub always remove the filters. It does not matter if they get dry but it is a good opportunity to clean them whilst draining!

Dont u 1st make sure the alkalinity and ph r at the appropriate levels as the chlorine/bromine wont be active unless those r balanced 1st?

That is correct in theory! You want to balance Alkalinity then PH then Sanitiser (in that order) but we always feel it is important to build the sanitiser level early on in the process. Chlorine/Bromine is still active when the PH/Alk is imbalanced but not as effective. The other issue is that the PH and Alk reading may vary as the temperature changes so it is best to wait until over 26 degrees to balance those. So yes you are correct but the logic here is based on the two above points. Hope this helps!
