Oh gosh! That would just gnaw at my brain. Waltzes are meant to be in 3. If there are several different time signatures in piece, I would see the conductor getting all mixed around and such. Which is all right. She's still trying to get it down and such.

Well, when you dance the waltz, you count left-1-2-right-1-2 which makes a full circle (if you have both legs) making total six. 6 and 4 have common divisor 2. And that makes them not that strange to each other.

When I moved up from my Intermediate Band to Advanced Band, I had a hard time following the conductor. It just confused. But now I can follow her just fine now. It took me a little bit of time to adjust to her conducting. Every conductor has their own style.

When typing in "Orchestra conducting and watching a video about what a conductor does, I randomly ran into this video that just appeared and had no idea you were out there until now. I gotta tell you that You're so Awesome!! As I'm on the verge of getting back into music making and this video has been my comic/humor relief of my stressful week from some stressful work I have been undergoing. So thanks so much sweetie for for this!!! I am definitely liking and subscribing! Can't wait to see more of your humorous videos. :-)

(1) I experienced one conductor who, no matter what tempo he started at, would speed up frantically until it got to the point where it could only be called uncomfortably fast, and then stay at that tempo, and look at the orchestra with puzzlement as if he wasn't sure how we'd got where we were. Every single time. (2) There was another conductor who would do the opposite - she would start a tempo and then slow down, and eventually ended up permanently slightly behind as if she were following us rather than the other way around. (3) There was one very kind and funny lady who led a small community orchestra I was in - the thing about her was she was quite voluptuous, in a roly-poly sort of way, and very enthusiastic about the music. She sometimes came to rehearsals in a sweatsuit and had very vigorous motions and let's just say there were parts of her body always going in all different directions. It was hypnotic and amusing but not terribly musical.

This video was amazing. Befor I clicked on it, I was intrigued by the topic, because it's a world in which most people have absolutely no inkling about. I was preparing myself for a fascinating view into a hidden world, and I was not disappointed! I think most people are probably like me and assume that the guy up there waving his arms knows exactly what he's doing!

Hi thanks for your video - very funny. I am a conductor but came up through the ranks of choirs and orchestras and had a few conductors like the ones you describe and really difficult to follow the beat - thanks to this experience, I try to give clear beats - especially down beats! Actually, some people in your thread have asked do you need a conductor at all - surely you can play just by following the music? I would like to answer this: This works with small groups of EXCELLENT musicians and also rhythm bands with a drummer to keep the beat - but next time you play in a big orchestra - try doing it without the conductor and see how you get on!! hahhahahahahha it is possible of course if EVERYONE knows what they are doing and are excellent at keeping the same rhythm and also EVERYONE can agree with what tempo to take and how to play it (there are many ways to interpret a piece of music so to have 40-50 different opinions it can get messy) - but in those orchestras the conductor is there not so much to keep everyone in time, as they should know what they are doing by now! but they are also there for interpretation - every piece can be played in different ways and it would not be art if we all played things the same way all the time. Also there are lots of pieces where the rhythms are complicated and instrument sections are doing different things - so important the conductor can control this and help with the entries - also a conductor - a good conductor - is there to inspire and to bring everyone together and give everyone confidence. Also the audience needs that person - a leader someone to inspire and to talk to them - bridge the gap between the musicians and the audience drawing them into the performance - a GOOD conductor will do this and more - also the conductor - in my job anyway - also organises all the music, the rehearsals, the concerts - makes arrangements of the pieces to suit the orchestra - lots of admin and organisation so that you the musicians just turn up and play your instruments... We do a lot of work behind the scenes - the conducting is only a very small part - and for me, when it comes to the performance I am just there to give confidence and keep them in time together - because at the beginning they are just learning to keep in time together... and when they are good enough musicians I then move on to help inspire and interpret the music for a better performance... I think the mistake with many bad conductors are two fold - the ones who are in a school environment and have been told by their boss that they have to conduct even though they have had no training and are petrified but do the best they can - albeit badly (but these people should have faith in their musicians and ask them their opinions and ask them what they need - they would learn a lot from other musicians and get better) - the other type of bad connector (which I normally find at the top end of the industry) are those that have forgotten what it's like to play in an orchestra and have gotten big-headed and pretentious and are treating it like they are the most important person and the soloist rather than remembering their role to help and inspire and be part of the team - we all have our role in a performance and are in it together - and these people are just awful as they not only alienate the musicians from themselves and can make the musicians feel worthless and useless but - and this is most important - ruin the whole point of playing the music in the first place... urgh! unfortunately there are too many conductors like this... come down from the heavens and remember we are all human... yes you are in charge and you must lead - but you must also inspire and give confidence and earn respect from the musicians in your orchestra - some of them may even be better musicians than you... so you need to inspire them and get them to follow you - they won't do it if you don't respect them as well... bref! enough said... vive la musique!! piece and love and - in my conductor role - don't forget to practice!!! makes the rehearsals so much easier to run... thank you :-)

Conducting baton = wand -> Imperio! Oh my goodness. I can't even believe this is the first time I'm watching this, but I have to say this: as a lowly seventh grader, I daydreamed about being an 8th grader, getting to be drum major, and starting off our finale marching piece with an "en garde!" pose. That was way before Harry Potter, but if HP had been a 1980s thing, 100% I would've been doing that wand-dueling pose. :)

In 4 years of high school I had 4 different conductors. freshman year was an ex marine drill sergeant who was borderline psychopathic sophomore year was a part time guy who played most in the nearby big city for shows junior year was a guy who stepped down from a major university to teach a a small catholic high school-go figure senior year was a wimpy whiny guy so you used to hide his car The best conductor i ever saw was at the National Symphony in DC….he conducted the first half of Ravel's Bolero using only his head

A junior of my former band is currently the student conductor, and there was once I joined in their school performance with him at the helm. It didn't end too well for me (and some others) because his conducting was WAY too fluid, almost like a horizontal wave - I had no idea which beat we were at, and had to follow the others to know where we were in the piece! XD

I've never had a conductor who conducted bad, but the clinician they chose for the district All City Choir thing we were doing was very harsh. He came from a very prestigious music school (not going to name any names for privacy sake), and was used to college students, not juniors and seniors in high school. On a Monday no less. Whenever there would be ANY talking, he would yell at singular people who were talking. He would also call people out on their singing (not always bad, but still scary). He just didn't seem to be a people person at all.

The clearest (and most elegant) conductor I have witnessed was Lazlo Heltay (brighton festival chorus/academy of st martins). His beat was crystal clear but also beautiful to watch. Many conductors get more and more vague and obscure the more famous they become, but get away with it because no-one dares challenge them. Solti was almost unfathomable as to where the downbeat was, but somehow he does extract some wonderful performances. Other conductors just beat time with no other input and so you might as well put a metronome on the stand. Others - actually many - communicate the downbeat by actually signalling a jerky upbeat. But worst of all is any conductor who indicates quiet by placing a finger on the lips as though to say "Shhsh". Oh, and conductors who bend at the knees should never be allowed on stage!

Hey Jo! It's me again! So, I've decided that this is my most favorite video of all times!!! I just wanted to say that I am still dealing with this from my conductor!!! It's very annoying. He has no clue as when to bring certain sections in... Very frustrating. He let it slip last Sunday, that anyone can do it. Why it's just waving a wand around. SERIOUSLY!? I have NEVER had to deal with a conductor that wasn't a true conductor... I am a player that prefers to be POINTED at, or QUED in when it is my sections time to come in. That's how I KNOW when I am to play, after counting sooooo many bars of rests, and just finally giving up counting, because I lost count between his flicks!!! So, I started to do your trick and pre-listen to pieces, so I can figure out where another section is before I come in, because no one else knows when to exactly come in, either... After I finally figure out when to come in, all of a sudden his baton will start slowing down, when we are at the same time... WHAT is up with that!? My wife keeps telling me, that I should ask to take the calling to be the conductor... However, I like playing more than conducting!!! Naturally, the other thing is that he is so not the right person for the role. We had a clarinetist who stated, "My clarinet isn't working." He immediately states... Ummm, I don't know what to tell you... My first question to her was... What number reed are you using there? She's all, "A number 3." Seriously!? An elementary student trying to use a No. 3 !? No wonder why the poor kid couldn't get a sound out... I hadn't even been playing for a while, and I could barely use a No. 2.5, that I was used to using in Jr. High... I think I ended up going back to a No. 2, and could have probably done better with a No. 1.5, because I am so over reeded instruments!!! But, since he needed another clarinet than more flutes... I figured the SHOW MUST GO ON!!! So, I ended up playing the clarinet last year. Another multi-instrument player started and was like me... She only wanted to play the flute, because her reeds for her sax and clarinet... were broke... Luckily for me, if I would have shown up late to the first rehearsal... I would have been stuck playing the clarinet again. However, this time, I am stuck as principal flute for the Orchestra!!! Yea!!! Anyway, so for the novel... I know you enjoy reading the responses from us, so I figured I better make this a good one!!! Keep me entertained Gurrrrrrl!!!!

Haha. The first one I can in a sense explaine all at once. As a conductor we sometimes conduct the flow of the music itself, and not exact. The circle-motion you talk about is mostly used by conductors if the music has a clear beat or forward motion. We use it when the music it self has a motor kinda. LIke a fast waltz that doesnt really need to be chopped. Even I use the circle mode, just to express that flow. So I was tought myself by my teachers that I should never hit the music like I wanted to kill the beat. But a good conductor know if and when to use it. A good conducter also know where and when to point people in. :-) But yes maybe there are conductors who use it even when you shouldnt, where you really have to show the beat. And just for your knowelledge. ITs always a down beat when the stick is down. In a sense. So 1. One is never up or at the sides. Always down, even if its a circle motion. But a good conductor as I sad, knows when the orchestra is good enough to understand. If its a beginners orchestra or a youth orchestra you in a sense always has to show the beat, but for an experienced orchestra its more or less the flow. I guess thats why many famous conductors sometimes can just show facial expressions and still get what they want. Just watch Leonard Bernstein do it. lol. Its fantastic. But if you listening to that clip when he does that, its a natural flow, wich the orchestra can manage itself. He is actually not even needed. Another thing when the conductor is doing this circle mode or if we can call it conducting the flow is, that the orchestra has to do what you just did express yourself. YOu have to listening to eachother, and help eachother. To become a unit, and not divided musicians. SO in my opinion thats a good conductor that can do that sometimes. Yes for you as a musician, it might not be optimal, but it does work. Many good orchestra has conductors that isnt even possible to follow, because they dont conduct at all. Here is Valery Gergiev with the Bolero... look. He is just using a toothpick instead of a conductors batong. :-) kzbin.info/www/bejne/mounmpSIj95jd80 This conductor is seen as one of the best in the world, but as a musician, you cant follow him. Despite that fact, he always gets great performances. HOw could that be? He makes the musician listen to themselves. By the way. I actually am a conductor, but I am also a musician. So in a sense I still know what to not do. And so far, most people get what I am doing. I am happy for that. But I had some bad conductors myself. The worst one conducted so big so we called him a Pelican (a type of bird with big wings lol). But most conductors I had, has actually been quite good.

I agree. My band director (in high school) would use the circle for a flowing part in the music and a more aggressive flick for the accented parts. He'd also do a figure 8 instead of a circle sometimes. So I guess maybe that says good things about us as a high school band that he didn't need to always show the beat. He'd also point to cue different parts and go big on a downbeat or for emphasis. I thought he did a good job and was always easy to anticipate and follow but maybe that's just because I was used to him. I can't imagine what it would be like to be a professional and be conducted by a variety of different people.

Can you please make a video about proper flute care? I keep reading and watching videos but a lot of those things seem like they might damage it... You're a flute expert and I watched your videos, I trust you more than the internet Please I'm like desperate ^~^

After watching this, I feel very lucky to have never had a poor conductor. Cheers to my directors, but God help those who have terrible ones.

My conductor isn't bad, but the guy who warms us up is terrible. (Long story, but the director drives a delivery truck as a day job and leads my band at night...he comes straight from his job and is usually running about 15 minutes late) Warm up director just flaps his arms like he's a bird taking flight, never keeps the same tempo. We just do what we can since it's just warm up and save the good stuff for the director.

The very very very very first conductor of our band was....not our favourite, not really good. So we did what u said, ignored him while looking at the score. He didn't even yell, but.....yea. The current one's good tho.

ArthurZH Hahaha, isn't it funny how we can definitely tell if a conductor is good or bad? :P

When I first started playing (in elementary school) there were times the whole band would follow me. The instructor could just wander off in the middle of the concert and everyone knew I was the one to watch. Then I went to middle school and high school in another city and was bottom of the heap. In my last year of high school I was last chair. I did a chair test to move up but hadn't practiced enough and knew I wasn't good enough and cried through the whole chair test. My band director was cool and just let me cry and play through the piece until the end without saying anything. I really didn't know what I could do to get better. It didn't help that I was playing on a junky flute while everyone else had nicer, better-sounding ones, but at least I didn't have to worry about my flute getting messed up when I was in marching band!

I have been lucky enough to play with decent conductors. Although, even the greatest of them sometimes have bad ideas. Like, subdividing half of the 1st 6/8 measure. And then give 2/4 measures to follow in 4. No, wait, what? Exactly. Confusing. And don't even start me on tempo changes that don't exist ANYWHERE but in their head. That they may or may not follow consistently from one rehearsal to the next. Or, when you point at a possible misprint in your music and get 'do whatever you want as long as I don't yell at ya' Yes, that misprint you've been practicing like crazy because it goes at 175 they don't yell at ya until that last dress rehearsal three hours before the concert. And THEN you have to change it. Life is never boring, that's for sure.

I must say that I am dealing with this type of a conductor in my current orchestra. NO ONE is sure of when they are to come in, as there are no direct cues. Frustrating... He just counts bars. During the actual concert... He won't be able to count bars out loud. We have a concert/event coming up on November 18th. The orchestra only practices together once a week (that is if he isn't getting many call outs). One night, I was the only one to show up, because I wasn't on his Orchestra list. SERIOUSLY!!!!

I had a conductor who used their whole body to conduct. They had this strange habit of kicking their leg backwards and forwards while waving the opposite arm the other way. They also had difficulty doing this in time to the music, so we just kind of ignored them.
