HOW TO FORMAT A FLASHBACK IN A SCREENPLAY
There are a couple of different typical formatting options for writing a flashback in a screenplay. These aren't “rules” to follow but guidelines to help you write the most clear and effective script for your readers, producers, crew, etc.
The three most common options for formatting screenplay flashbacks are as subheadings, at the end of scene headings, and as transitions. These are locations where you can indicate the beginning and end of any flashback you want to include.
No matter which method you choose, the most important thing to keep in mind is clarity. Is it clear to your reader and to your crew where and when these flashbacks occur? Or are these indications inconsistent, or even worse, buried throughout the screenplay?
To recap, if you absolutely need to include a flashback in your screenplay, make sure they serve the story and that they don’t confuse your reader. With these considerations made, you’ll have a clean and professional-looking screenplay with meaningful flashbacks.
