Sugggestion for you, if you use a pot colander you can easily easeily do multiple batches with one pot of boiling water and one bowl of ice water without wasting your time or water. You can go from boiling water to then strain the water to an ice bath, strain the cold water and then go to cookie sheet. All without wasting a lot of water and then you can do another batch right away.

Purple Hull Peas, shell them, do not wash them, put them in a clean white pillowcase, tie a knot in the pillowcase and put them in the freezer. Take out the amount of peas you want to cook, wash them well and cook as normal. Peas frozen in this manner taste like you just picked them.

I've been canning and freezing for many yrs. Everything I freeze I blanch except the zipper peas, I have just bagged them, but because I kept hearing that I need to blanch them, so last yr I blanched half of them and just bagged the others as they were. I had to experiment with them because I had never found them to be anything but delicious. Anyway, I could not tell any difference at all from the blanched ones and the non blanched. However, my husband did the peas this yr and he blanched them.

I usually do not blanch my broccoli or kale but never had problem with the enzyme reaction breakdown the product. I usually wash really well and vacuum seal it in freezer bag to prevent oxygen from getting in to basically stop the enzyme reaction, comes out fresh and delicious! Going to try it your way own my peas! Thanks for the video :)

I know I’m so very late to the party but I have a question! Perhaps you can help. 🙏🏼 How many plants do you GUESS one would need to plant to be able to freeze 26 POUNDS of fresh, garden peas? I’m not looking for exact numbers but just a ballpark. Does anyone know?

A lot of variables Amy. What kind of peas you grow. What zone you're in. What kind of soil you have. How much rainfall. I usually do three 80' rows to get about ten pounds or so of frozen peas in western Pennsylvania. But your mileage may vary. I'd suggest you plant a couple of rows your first year and see how much you get. You can adjust up or down from there for future years. Best of luck Amy!

Cooking peas is no blanching. Blanching is when you put them in ice water after boiling to stop the cooking process.

Hey! Was wondering how long you are able to store them in the fridge before you need to blanch and freeze them? It's my first year gardening and I got a hand full of peas today but have lots more that will be ready real soon but aren't quite there. I would rather do the blanching all at once instead of doing su h a small batch. So I'm wondering how long I can keep these few in the fridge while the others grow a little more, their really close. Thank you!

Thanks for the science. Have you done it both ways at the same time so you can show the side-by-side results after you take them out of the freezer 3-6 months later?

I haven't. I like doing vids to help people. But I don't usually do something a suboptimal way just to show that there's a better way. That's my FOOD man! :)

I have a question hun. Does the 90 seconds start after they start to boil again, or after you put them in the put?
@selfsufficientpath
@selfsufficientpath 5 жыл бұрын
I start the timer when I put them in the water. The temp comes down some, but it's still hot enough to get the job done.

How long to keep in cold water
@selfsufficientpath
@selfsufficientpath 6 жыл бұрын
Just long enough for them to cool. Couple of minutes is usually good, but may not take that long depending on how many peas, how much cold water, etc.
