How to Freeze Strawberries

Currently I do not have a free standing freezer. I usually have one but mine was destroyed during a hurricane. Buy yours in January. As soon as we move I am going to get another one. Alas, I don't have chickens but I may get four of those. Thank you for your videos.

This video brings back some wonderful memories of picking strawberries when I was a kid. Then we'd wash, hull and freeze them in our large chest freezer. The best part of having strawberries was making strawberry ice cream and putting them on short cake. Thank you for sharing this video with us. I usually freeze berries on a sheet pan whole so I have to try this. I have an inexpensive little strawberry huller that is sold on Amazon or in various kitchen departments. I can hull a quart in about 5 minutes. As I watched I kept talking to you: "Kevin, this would be so much quicker with a strawberry huller!" I have also sliced, put a little sugar and some lemon juice, and frozen small batches in containers for the freezer. And yes, I don't know what I'd do without an upright freezer. Things tend to get lost in the bottom freezer of my refrigerator. Always enjoy your posts so thanks.

We've had a separate freezer since 1972. we've always had a chest freezer. Last year, at the age of 71, I got tired of defrosting the chest freezer. It was a huge thing and I couldn't reach the bottom to grab the ice that fell off the sides. Quite a few times I almost fell on my head into the freezer rocking on my stomach to try and grab some ice! So, we got an upright freezer and it's frost free! We're on an 80 acre farm (although we no longer actively farm - we rent out our pasture land. We raised our own beef, pork, chickens, goats, sheep, ducks and geese. So a freezer was a necessity. Unfortunately, age and health problems sometime dictate, what you can do and what you can't. I couldn't exist without an extra full size freezer!!

Great video. We bought a up right freezer the year after we got married. It has been one of our best investments. We put it on 2 wooden dollies so we could move it if necessary.

We just got a stand alone freezer from accumulated air mile points. We were wondering what we were going to put in it. I thank you for giving me an idea to freeze fruit and store it. Sorry, don't have our own chickens, although we have jokingly talked about raising them. Living right down town with limited back yard space would not be ideal to raise a chicken!😀

Hi Kevin, I have an upright freezer and it is one of the best investments ever along with my foodsaver. I got the freezer on craigslist and the food saver at a thrift shop. Under a $100 for both. Also, as someone else said a strawberry huller is a fantastic tool and only $5.99 on Amazon. I have given this as a gift so many times I should buy stock in this! I make many of your soups and have filled one entire shelf of the freezer with them. I also freezer banana slices for my smoothies.

I got my second upright freezer from Lowes out on LI just a couple weeks ago. They have the best price I found. We just went to the upick farm and picked two cases of strawberries for my daughter (24lbs). She froze them so that she can have some until next year. She is growing everbearing strawberries in the front beds of our house, these are the ones she will eat until this fall.

@@kevinleejacobs1364 I got the Frigidaire 15.5 cu ft on sale plus a discount in-store. I recommend getting the extended warranty (I always end up using mine). Good Luck you will find that you can save so much more on groceries with having a good freezer.

I have a stand alone freezer and a refrigerator ( or could be a freezer if you change the temp) only in the basement. No chickens though! Having a separate freezer has been wonderful during the pandemic. I had two corned beef and a couple of whole chickens. I make a lot of casserole, lasagna and stuffed peppers(vegan) and always have one for the freezer . Husband eats them but I also make meatballs ( beef) in sauce and freeze in bags for him!

The strawberries soften up after freezing/thawing (all fruits do), but they do not turn soggy. I use the berries for smoothies, all kinds of desserts, and as a topping for oatmeal.

I have two refrigerators and an upright freezer. One top freezer holds soups, herbs and sauces , one bottom freezer holds fruits and vegetables; the upright freezer holds, nuts, meats, poultry, and baked items; the reason you cannot find a freezer right now is because of the pandemic. Many people freezing more as they fear foods will not be readily available.

Hi Kevin, I intended to reply the day this was posted but .... memory doesn't always score a 10/10! I also have 2 refrigerators with freezers but discovered, as you stated, there's not really that much room if one freezes a lot of items. About 5 years ago I purchased an upright freezer (Frigidaire 20.5 cu ft - model #GLFH21F8HWG ... now discontinued) and haven't looked back (still no chickens). One of the best purchases ever. Having items easily accessible, due to the arrangement of shelves, similar to a refrigerator, was a big plus vs a chest freezer. At one time, I had a chest freezer, which was half the price. It performed very well but approximately once a year, it needed to be defrosted and drained, not an impossible task but what to do with the frozen items while defrosting? I had a large cooler which helped but time was of the essence! It's a matter of preference, space and budget and both have their merits. Either does the job but I prefer the upright. Enjoyed the strawberry freezing episode. So perfect for the dead of winter! Hope this helps. Your videos help me!

Hi Ronald - Most of the upright freezers I've investigated are max 17 cu ft. Your 20.5 cu ft Frigidaire sounds ideal for me. Too bad it was discontinued! So glad you are enjoying the videos. I'll keep filming them as long as you and other kind viewers are willing to watch them!

I love your roasted strawberries recipe. I was wondering after you pull them out of the oven could you can them in a water bath method? My grandmother in Germany use to can strawberries but i haven't been been able to find how she did it.

🍁You did not have to get all the air out of the bags? I always read that to stop freezer burn in frozen foods to take all the air out. I was debating on getting one of those gadgets that does this, but re-supplying the bags can be expensive.
