Alright guys, as promised, the HOW-TO on most of my current long range planes' autopilot and FPV systems! This is very simple and easy, especially compared to how they were a few years back... back then it was a nightmare, because it didn't end with just putting it all together and mounting it in the plane... one thing used to always interfere with another and this just kept on and on! Right now... things just work, solder them up and mount them in the plane, and you're good to go!

Thanks for the awesome video! I see that you do not use a magnetometer and airspeed sensor, which traditionally I've always done with Arduplane. However I've found that both those sensors are the most tempermental. Do you find that Arduplane performs okay without those sensors even in high-wind situations?
@ArxangelRC
@ArxangelRC 4 жыл бұрын
Well... I've seen people only having issues with those on planes, and I've had tones of issues with them on copters, so I tend not to use the magnetometer for that very reason... as well as the airspeed sensor! So far, at least personally, I've not suffered any problems because of this, neither during auto missions, nor while flying myself!

Thanks for the video, do you use telemetry radios with your setup? I'm trying to figure out a combination of telemetry, video and RC frequencies for Long range. With my issue being that I wanted to use R9MM for RC, but SIK radio in US uses 915mhz
@ArxangelRC
@ArxangelRC 4 жыл бұрын
I use telemetry only for initial setup... which means pretty much LoS flights at close distance until I get the plane dialled in, and then remove the telemetry unit when I get to go long! Perhaps you could try 433Mhz radio for control... with 915Mhz telemetry... or the other way around!

Thank you that was helpful, just one question, how did you power the PDB? directly through the battery or through filtered power from Omnibus' RAM port? Also, I have seen the magical yellow smoke apear from my omnibus V2 yesterday. Apparently, the wire used by me was thick and the positive battery input pad on omnibus is very small. It short circuited as the solder touched the copper lined hole for screws.
@ArxangelRC
@ArxangelRC 4 жыл бұрын
PDB has its own filters for the regulators on board, so I feed it power directly from the battery, but after it goes through the current sensor on the Omni, so it would measure that draw as well!

It is not clear to me how you connect the fc to the pdb. I understand from the video that the battery is plugged to the fc, and don't follow how you power the pdb... :( Did you upload to anywhere a connection diagram? Good job and thanks for sharing your experience!!
@ArxangelRC
@ArxangelRC 5 жыл бұрын
After going through the FC, via the power sensor, the wires then connect to the ESC, and there is a split wire from the ESC with battery voltage, that in turn connects and powers the PDB!

@@ArxangelRC My ESC doesn't have any additional JST connector with battery voltage, if I make a wire from fc to pdb and then on pdb battery pads make a "sandwich" cable -solder wires from fc to pdb and then from the same battery pads on pdb solder another pair of cables to esc - do you think it would work? I might be missing something but it seems like the PDB and extra BEC are unnecessary... I've never had any issues powering my servos from the BEC of the ESC. It is merely to have a backup if the ESC burns itself so you can still glide home? If your ESC is rated to handle the expected current and has a temperature shutdown feature, should be ok. If you have a VTX and camera that can take full battery voltage, just power them directly off the battery. Less wiring and no custom harnesses needed. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I have 6 builds that have been running ok like this for a good while. Then again if I flew at the distances and altitudes you do I might be inclined to be more concerned about power setup :) 9:32 shouldn't the video signal go through the FC if you want OSD?
@ArxangelRC
@ArxangelRC 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly! I've had issues where the ESC experiences some kind of failure, servos become unresponsive... and all you can do it sit and watch how the plane nose dives at speed into the ground!!! Since then, on my bigger models... I have used a separate SBEC to power the servos for redundancy! As for the video stuff... I do prefer to have it powered from a filtered source in order to minimise interference in the video signal! And yes, the video signal should go through the FC for the OSD... I just animated the arrow from the wrong cable... but only noticed it when I uploaded it! :S

That one requires no soldering or very much programming, and also works with the antenna tracker without the additional module, so basically you only need to connect a camera and a Vtx to it, and the radio receiver, and you're good to go! Well... cheapest and simplest of the sort is the ZOHD Kopilot, but it doesn't have an OSD module, unless you wire in the antenna tracker module, which provide an OSD, but still requires some DIY, etc. Easiest solution, which includes the tracking data for the antenna tracker would be the MFD autopilot... but that is not exactly a budget version... although compared to a Cube... it could be considered one.

@@ArxangelRC Thx for coming back to me on this. I would also like to do a bit of long range but I would not yet want to invest in a huge ground station. So the question is that rather using the Dragonlink as your FPV rather than the big ground station. Or if you can explain how you would setup your current system to be able to see the video feedback on something like goggles or a lcd display. The issue is that I'm not into ultra long distance - something like a good video feed at 10km would be all I need. Or you can mail met at johan.vdwerff@yahoo.com

Well, that should be pretty easy... a 1200mW Vtx paired with a quality Pagoda on the model, and a receiver with a Triple Feed Patch Array on a tripod, with a wire connecting to your goggles... pointed in the direction of the plane, should give you 10kms easy! Depending on altitude of course! If you move to the side too much, you will have to adjust the antenna position...

Well... depending on parts... could be made within 200 USD I think! But that would also depend on size! As it grows... the autopilot could be the same, but motors, ESCs, props and battery would grow... and these become quite expensive when they get big enough!

Can you share diagram of the air unit video wiring, do you take video signal from fc to the air unit, or you make Y cable of the video (one for fc one for air unit) ?
@ArxangelRC
@ArxangelRC 4 жыл бұрын
The video goes from the camera to the flight controller so it would have the OSD overlay, then it goes from the flight controller to the antenna tracker module, so it would get the coordinates of the plane, so the antenna tracker on the ground would know where the plane is and rotate accordingly, and then it goes to the Vtx. In case you don't have an antenna tracker, the video signal would go directly from the flight controller to the Vtx.

Well that would require time and money, both of which I don't have... to do and get going... and I have my doubts as to the success of it... would also take away from my ability to do the reviews and videos... which bad in my mind! Also... can't suit all plane sizes as each one has its own requirements for wire lengths, etc., and with the speed at which gear is being upgraded and is changing recently... by the time I have any "sets" put together... they would be old news and nobody would want them... So for someone who has nothing at home and wants to build it, your parts list adds up to some $850 plus an airplane such as Volantex asw28 it will be about $1000 to get it done, not including shipping and a good camera tripod (but one can always tape the tracker to a table I guess). Is this right? I excluded the bigger camera, only considering the tiny one.
@ArxangelRC
@ArxangelRC 4 жыл бұрын
If you add in the tracker, then yes! It just needs to be fixed somewhere, but there are some pretty cheap tripods out there... so that shouldn't be much of an issue! I would definitely tell you that investing in a good radio and a good charger, at least in my experience, is a MUST, so it is worth spending a bit more money on! Once you have those... the cost of building additional planes drops down considerably, especially if you reuse the existing batteries!

I don't recommend the Micro GPS unit suggested in this video. I don't know how it works with Ardupilot, but it works horribly with iNAV, and you need iNAV if you want to fly with HD video (DJI FPV doesn't support Ardupilot telemetry). With iNAV it keeps disconnecting every minute or so. Also, it took me more than 10 minutes to get meager 6 satellites today. In flight both RTH and CRUISE stabilization failed with a suicidal nose dive. I tested exactly the same setup (Omnibus F4 Pro) with Beitiang BN-880 GPS and it worked like charm. But it was a really heavy GPS, this is why I decided to try the Micro GPS suggested here. Instead, I am going to use Beitiang BN-180, which also weighs only 4.8 g, and is recommended for iNAV.

That's the thing I don't get about iNav... so picky... such a whiny princess that firmware is! ArduPlane would just keep flying with or without a GPS unit... and I've yet to find one that doesn't work with it! Why even bother with iNav... since you've got a choice?

It’s 2019 my man and if it’s not effecting you in any way mind your own. Fly in circles with your scale models and have fun and we will fly the way we love to fly and do it safely 😉✌🏼
