Great tips; getting the clutch off and flywheel removal! Another good tip: Keep your chain sharp so it makes shavings, not dust. This will keep your saw way cleaner.
@markluxton3402Ай бұрын
I have been examining my non working saws or parts saws and it looks like two new new pistons and maybe cylinders. My XL Automatic with chain break that I was hoping to run, has metal flakes in the engine case. I used an endoscope to look down the intake hole. I have a couple old pistons and one cylinder in my parts box. Maybe they will fit and maybe they were not already replaced on another saw. I was not going to keep the saw, giving it to Leon or you. But after watching you tear one down, I may yet restore it. When I inherited my Grandparents house and shop, I recall seeing a small box with a piston and rings in it. It may have been for a vintage Homelite since Grampy ran these, and Lombard. Think I can find it now, after being here 20 years! Hoping. This XL Auto will run, I test ran it years ago; but not now seeing metal flakes in the engine.

Good video. I worked on these saws there very reliable. You can't take the drive case off even with those 5 bolts removed cause crank is locked in place by the bearing and some bearing retainer screws.

Yes they must match to work correctly, Phelon / Phelon, or Wico/ prestolite/ Wico prestolite

Would keeping a sharp chain go a long way in minimizing crud build up, as using quality oil and keeping a good tune on her, taking her apart looks fairly extensive, but that's one of the reasons I love vintage saws they are definitely a labor of love!
@j.chrisbeck74922 жыл бұрын
It may minimize the crud a little bit because of the larger wood chips not sticking as much, but if you have an air compressor, it can be extremely helpful in keeping your saws clean, just make sure none is getting inside the engine, (intake and exhaust closed off)

Thank you for this video! I have a Homelite Super XL that I have fully disassembled currently. What would you recommend for getting the carbon off and old paint off? I am looking to restore this saw :).
@Smittyschainsaws9 ай бұрын
Long soak in gas for carbon. The paint is harder without a paint stripper.

Hello! I need help, by tapping he takes out pulleys to remove the disc from the electromagnet. I have bent the thread a little and now the nut doesn't fit. Do you know what type of thread it is? I have bought standard and fine Whitworth dies and they don't work, I think the Whitworth ones don't have the same thread pitch, thanks in advance. A greeting from Spain!
@Smittyschainsaws3 ай бұрын
As long as it’s just a little bit on the end you should be able to take a file and clean up the issue by filing it into a taper. I have done that before. It will be difficult to get the nut started straight but it usually works.
@instantkarma19788 ай бұрын
I have a question for you. I am considering rebuilding Grandpa's old Super XL Automatic. It is seized up, no longer rotating, so will I be able to remove the flywheel at all?
@Smittyschainsaws8 ай бұрын
Yup. It’s probably going to be a difficult build replacing bearings and everything. Might need a parts saw.

HOW do you know that the bearings and seals you purchase today, either NOS or parts made in CHINAMANVILLE will be trustworthy in the rebuild ?? I know the old production bearings were first class parts. Stuff one buys today is just a CRAPSHOOT. Nice video fella with down to earth information too. Peace v
@SmittyschainsawsАй бұрын
You don’t really but still better than bad bearings. I picked up a case of new old stock a few years ago. I don’t think I will need to worry for a while.
