Momentum is so important and it doesn't have to be as elusive as it often feels. I was DESPERATE for momentum in the early days of my deslobification process. Here's how I took control and did things in a way sure to build momentum.

I walked in the kitchen this morning and almost had a meltdown. I started the coffee maker and said I'm just going to tidy up while the coffee brews. It was less than 5 minutes. I did the dishes, threw away the trash and put recycling in the bin. I was blown away by how much better the kitchen looked in 5 minutes! I remembered you talking about awkward pauses and it helped me sooooo much. Thank you!!!!!

My friend and I are playing a game where every day we take a before picture of an area and declutter/organize for 5 minutes and then take an after picture. It has been so fun and I'm shocked how much change can happen in just 5 minutes! I've finished my pantry, almost my whole kitchen and am starting on my closet. It is so satisfying! And so low pressure because it's only 5 minutes of your day:) And sending/receiving her pics is extra motivation!

@@rev.robynyoung7680 That is so true! I put off tidying the pantry for MONTHS, and every time I'd open the door I'd feel stressed and yucky. It literally took ten minutes to put back in order. I was shocked, and also sad I didn't just do it sooner! Now if I notice something bothering me (food stain on a cupboard/dust on a lamp etc) more than one time I just clean it asap. So much better than before when I would walk by and think 🤔 oh yeah, gotta do that later, but later never came and I felt bad about myself lol

Me too! I'm not a morning person. But when I go to get my coffee & the kitchen is a nightmare, I do the same. Just removing trash & recycling, throwing dishes in DW, and putting away stuff, I can drink my coffee with sanity.

OMG... I did not EVEN want to get out of bed.. I had made progress this week but was now overwhelmed.. I remembered your "visibility rule".. MADE MYSELF GET UP AND DID ONE OVERWHELMING CORNER OF THE KITCHEN..IMMEDIATELY BROUGHT EVERYTHING THERE TO THE DUMPSTER AND MOPPED THAT AREA... It got filled with other stuff that had to go... SO even though it was cold and I was depressed I got a box and put THAT stuff in the dumpster.. STILL depressed at a lot going on now..but a LOT got done in one day...

I started my declutter at my front door, partially for this reason. I was sick of ignoring the doorbell, especially if it was someone like a neighbor who just came by to borrow something. 😭😭 I just finally said "enough." I wanted to open my door without shame. My process was very slow but I made sure, starting at my foyer, that I would maintain these spaces as I moved thru the house. But I left my kitchen for the very last even after doing the upstairs. Used your techniques primarily and pushed to minimalism. Best decision I've made in decades.❤ I was someone that needed to own *way* less than I did. It's so worth it!

Yesterday I thought "what does Dana say to do?" the other day and painted a wall to declutter. Before I would have thought "What???" But I wanted to declutter and my dining room furniture is in my living room because we had to redecorate after the roof leaked. I painted 3 walls but then the paint for the feature wall was the wrong shade and I lost momentum. The way to get my furniture out of my living room is to do a coat of paint! So although my brain was telling me to sort out the spare room that's full of miscellaneous stuff, I ignored it. And now I have DIY momentum again so I can get my space back. Thank you Dana!

Working on visible spaces also pushes me to make real, final decisions. If I start with a closet (so there's a place to put stuff away), that allows me to stuff shift from the visible space rather than making final decisions. Also, I just needed a repair guy to fix our internet connection. He called and said "I can be there in 15 minutes" and I said "sure, that would be great". Thanks, Dana!

I WAS desperate and truly hopeless until I found you. I have been trying your methods for about a year and just trying to work it daily helps me keep my sanity. I am still only on “visible space” and I haven’t even been able to a muster a dedicated declutter but your methods are the only ones that have clicked for me. I’m using a type of “opportunistic decluttering” with your methods. I hear you in my head “better than it was before” and “take it there now” so when I go to the bathroom, I grab trash and anything I see that I can drop off on my path through my house to the next visible space. Sometimes it’s 5 minutes. Sometimes less. But it DOES give momentum to the next thing. And anything I touch I ask myself- Is it worth putting away or can I let it go (trash or donate). A lot of times, It’s more worth it to me to not have to ever touch it again. Goodbye unnecessary things. I hope to reach a manageable level of things and the decluttering muscles to maintain my space. I’m PRAYING for it and doing my absolute best. Thank you truly for breaking these things down!

They can’t refill your prescription until you come in for your annual exam. You’re 3 months overdue.” Whack. “Mam, we looked at your car, and we will need to keep it for 3 days while we finish the repair.” Whack… Life is getting back to normal, now. I’m going back to basics. My son is helping me with a major declutter of a junk bedroom now. Because I'm disabled, it's hard for me to "take it there now" but he is helping with that part! We got two large trashbags out of that room today, and got rid of a whole bedframe yesterday. (Literally cut it up with a jigsaw to make it small enough to throw away into our apartment's dumpster, and it took up less space than one kitchen garbage bag.) Soon we plan to rent a truck to get rid of the mattresses! It's hard to let go of anything I think I could have recycled into something better, but right now I'm focusing on our right to have a functional, beautiful space that serves us NOW, rather than feeling obligated to find the perfect donation or recycling option for everything. Sometimes, especially when you're overwhelmed, it's okay to start with just calling stuff trash so you don't have any further burden from it. Someday when I've got better options I will be able to make better choices. For now, I just need to get big changes to happen asap!

While it feels like musical chairs and doesn’t look too much different, it’s an accomplishment and I know this habit may change later but still I tell myself “Better is good”. I’m not expecting to nail concentrating on one room at a time while I’m getting in the habit. Baby steps.

Far be it from me to sound like any kind of expert, but might it be that you need to declutter? If five minutes isn't seeing an improvement, maybe there's too much? Only you know, friend, but sometimes there's something else to consider

@@Racheythemagnificent It’s more of a case of not concentrating on one room at a time. I’ve lived with a hoarder for 32 yrs but always kept my stuff organised. I’ve been decluttering for 7 yrs and even had to pack up my kids stuff as they refused to take their stuff with them when they left home. My husband would also take over any space I organised including any walkways. I’ve had lots of therapy for the emotional abuse from him about not cleaning “correctly” and that completely changed how I looked at housework especially since I was the tidiest teenager and would go through my room completely every 2 weeks. It took decades to even be brave enough to vacuum when he was in the house after a horror incident. Really looking forward to setting up a new house and keeping organised my way later this year. I’m a bee with a bit of butterfly thrown in and have been learning how to do things differently now I’ve been emotionally healing over the last 5 years, cleaning up is one and seeing what works for me. Have an awesome day!

@@fionaschiffl8065 oh I'm sorry. See, I should keep my trap shut. I understand why you're resigned to that. What a tough spot to be in.

@@Racheythemagnificent No not at all, don’t worry. I’ve found that my issues with cleaning, decluttering and being organised were a result of trauma but I’ve had a lot of the best therapy to be able to deal with it. When I was 7yo, my younger sister and I had to wash up each night and she would cause a fight most nights so I became accustom to being anxious about being in the kitchen. Didn’t help much when my husband would do a resentful grunt if I was in the kitchen and he wanted to get a glass of water and didn’t like the way I cooked or cleaned. Since addressing my issues, and thanks to Dana, Cass and Dawn’s awesomeness and wisdom I’ve been able to keep the kitchen under control on a daily basis! Woohoo! Take it there now has lead to me stopping in a room and doing a chore in there instead of putting it off so that’s a massive bonus!

Fiona, your way will still work. It will just take a bit longer to notice the difference. Because of mobility/pain issues I tend to pick up this way as well. Each time I go into another room to take care of something, I may pick up something there that goes into a different room. I don't use a timer. I just do it every time I go to the bathroom (a LOT, health issues). It really does keep things pretty picked up these days.

I love the videos you've been doing lately. The breakdown of your 5 declutter rules being explained is removing the few bumps I was still experiencing. And now I feel I have a better understanding and the meaning of your 5 steps decluttering rule. I'm so happy and thankful that I gave your 5 declutter rules a chance. Thank you for everything you do an d your time.☺ Happy New Year and to many great new beginnings to come. 🥳

I haven't actually de-cluttered today, but I did my dishes -- because there were no more clean dishes. Then I gathered the items to be put away and the recyclables went into 2 bags for the day the weather allows the snow to melt so I can get to the recycle bin. Once everything was put away and the dishes done, I wiped down the counters and stove. I WAS THRILLED! That sent me into my bedroom where I put the clean sheets back on the bed. I picked up the clean clothes that were folded and stacked them on my dresser. Yes, that may be a setback, but it's better than it was. All the dirty clothes are now in the basket where they belong and although I have a stack of donations on my couch across from my bed, the room looks SO MUCH BETTER. Now I'll grab my broom and sweep the floors. I'm not ready for dusting yet because things need to be put away, donated, etc. before I do that. But, it is a start.

Huh…sooo, instead of just putting all of the holiday stuff back where it was in the storage room, my decision to clear out the whole storage room to “organize” it in my one-bedroom apartment, was maybe not my best choice???🤔 Hmmm. Well, the good news is, I’ve already got the stuff out for next year, as chances are, it will take me that long to be able to fit it back where it belongs for the off seasons!😬

When someone comes in my front door, they can see my entire living room, dining room, kitchen and back entry. My most visible space is half of my house! Open floor plans are not a slob's best friend!
