Being underweight is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) below 18.5 although know that BMI measurements on their own are not perfect. In the US, 1% of men and 2.4% of women 20 years and older are underweight.
It can actually be just as bad for your health as being obese. Studies show it can raise your risk of infections, lead to osteoporosis, lead to age-related muscle wasting (sarcopenia) and more.
According to one study, being underweight was associated with a 140% greater risk of early death in men, and 100% in women. These were actually higher than the risks for obesity.
There are also many people who are not clinically underweight but still want to gain some muscle and mass. Now for either scenario, the main principles are the same.
Eat More Calories Than Your Body Burns
The most important thing to gain weight is to eat more calories than your body needs. Without doing that, you simply won’t gain any.
The quickest way to determine your calorie needs is using an online calorie calculator which I'll link up in the video description.
Aim for 300-500 calories per day above your maintenance level, or 700-1000 calories if you want to gain weight fast. Keep in mind that calorie calculators only provide estimates.
Binging on soda and donuts may help you gain weight, but that's not the right kind. It's very important to eat mostly healthy foods so that you build muscle and still nurture metabolic health.
Eat Lots of Protein
The single most important nutrient for gaining healthy weight is protein. After all, muscle is made of protein.
For weight gain aim for 0.7-1 gram of protein per pound of body weight (1.5 - 2.2 grams of protein per kilogram). You can even go above that if your calorie intake is very high.
Healthy high-protein foods include meats, fish, eggs, many dairy products, legumes and nuts. Protein supplements like whey protein can also be useful if you struggle to eat large amounts.
Although protein is king, you'll also need to eat a lot of carbs and fat to exceed your calorie requirements each day. So following a low-fat or low-carb diet won't be helpful.
Lift Weights and Improve Your Strength
In order to make sure that the excess calories go to your muscles instead of just your fat cells, it's absolutely crucial to lift weights.
The gym is the perfect environment for this, and you should aim to train 2-4 times per week. If you are new to it all, consider hiring a qualified personal trainer at the beginning.
You may also want to consult with a doctor if you have skeletal problems or any sort of medical issue.
At the end of the day, changing your weight is a marathon, not a sprint. That goes for both losing and gaining. And while it does take a long time, if you are consistent then you will find a lot of success in the long run.

@@kulsoomwahid5488 i play football so I workout 7 days a week. If you want to try to workout 3 or 4 days a week you should try that. I recommend starting with basic lifts. Bench and squat.

If you think you eat a lot you don't. I thought I ate a lot until I really started eating a lot (tracking calorie intake) and the difference was massive. There are also other factors that play into appetite. If you have a good sleep schedule you will feel more hungrier compared to a shit sleep schedule. If you nofap you will feel more hungrier compared to pmo daily/weekly. For those who can't eat 3 large meals in a day. Instead eat 10 small meals a day each around 300 calories. I find it best to drink boost or ensure (plus calories) because drinks are less filing therefor you can eat more. Whilst getting that calories. Your body will start to get used to the constantly drinking and eating and your stomach will "feel" bigger and hence you can eat more! Good luck y'all

starting to drink ensure as I would usually only drink water and started nofap, just tryna get lots of calories in my body so when I exercise there's an actual effect but idk if it'll go well but I've started to eat lots of meat, rice and eggs as well

Boys and girls.Dont give up.!! Consistency is the key. Since ancient times the human body goal is to survive. If you personally want to gain weight, your body will not understand that easily. It may confuse. But if we continue to give it more opportunity by giving it excess calories. ,it will truly understand us.

I’m watching this because I became underweight through an eating disorder and my doctor is forcing me to gain so I don’t go to hospital. I’m trying to convince myself that gaining will make me healthier and that I can do so in a healthy way

Thanks for the video! I'm 12yrs old and I weigh around 35Kg... My aim is to gain 5-10Kg. But when I think about it, I'm trying to gain about a third of my weight which seems absurd to me D: I want to gain weight because my arms look horrendous: my elbows are so pointy when I bend them & it will stop my mother's comments on how skinny I am. It would also boost my confidence and tick that off of my Worry List (things im insecure about). Thank-you for reading :) If you share any similar stories I'd love to hear about them! edit: (may, 2022) im now 5'4" & 50kg. I was stuck at 45kg for a long time but I've no idea where the extra 5kg came from, since i really see no difference. Im very happy with my weight now!

+lazycatlux Thanks for the comfort :) My dad was my weight when he was my age, and he didn't gain anything until he started drinking beer. Hopefully I'm with the most people who gain weight at around 13-14. I hope you reach your goal weight again!

Need to consume more than burn calories, got it! My biggest concern is making sure I’m eating the right foods and not junk food to bulk up. Yes, I have pea protein powder and stopped taking it when my coach told me to get proteins from food alone but that’s not enough considering I don’t eat meat every day. Red meat is a no for me due to high cholesterol. I used to be obese with BMI around 30. Now, I’m freaking out as it dropped below 24 today.

So I am 13 and my BMI is 18.5 which isn’t horrible but my doctor did still say that I need to gain weight and I agree. I am small boned and 5,1 which is 2 inches shorter than the average height. I’m scared that I’m going to be short forever and that I won’t grow anymore. I try not to think like this but it’s true I worry that I’ll be too small and I’ll be behind on growth. My goal is to go from 100lbs to 135 and still be healthy. I want to grow!

healthy eating is essential. you also need to make sure you are slowly adding calories to your already regimented eating habits in order to see weight gain. you can't just eat a lot of calories because if you do that you will just become fat and could possibly become sick. you need to exercise and lift the weight while doing just moderate cardio. eat in a slight excess of calories, in a small surplus of your total calories. the longer you weightlift and move your muscles the more you will build muscle, provided you are doing it correctly, and when this happens you supplement your muscle with calories, mainly protein and you will gain weight. it has to be done slowly.

I bulked 10kg. from 54 to 64kg. I did it in half a years time and it ruined my body forever. I went to 52 during a corona isolation depression and my skin is still YEARS after bubbly with big fat cells and never lost my underchin.

I have to gain weight because I weigh 47-48kgs with a height of 175cm, but because of an eating disorder (anorexia). But the doctor said that I have to gain weight without going to the gym, because any kind of sports raises the stress levels in my body, and even if I eat in a calorie surplus it would damage my body and my hormon levels. So I have to gain weight just by doing ''normal'' daily activities, like taking the stairs, grocery shopping, and maybe a little bit bicycling.

@@wilberplays I‘m fine, I weigh around 86-88kgs now and going to the gym 4-5 times a week, so I have a muscular built. Sure not everything is pure muscles, I also have fat mass, but I‘m looking kinda good. I want to drop down to 78-80kg so I‘m ripped, but I love eating too much hahaha.

It's so frustrating to be underweight. Most people do not understand how hard it can be to maintain a healthy weight. I'm on my feet all day at work and it's really hard to eat enough to stay at a healthy weight. 😒

I when I was 11 I was only 64 pounds then I went to my doctor and she told me I had to gain weight so after I turned 12 I was 72 pounds. In a few weeks I’m going to be 13 and I am now 89 pounds Im still underweight and still have to gain weight that’s my story.

I’ve been underweight my whole life and it seems like every year I get older it’s harder to maintain 100 lbs. I eat as much as my body will let me (until my stomach hurts) and it never seems like enough. I’m honestly scared of exercising because I’m worried I’ll burn off everything I ate.

I have to gain 2 stone in a few months because I'm severely underweight. Im now having 4 full meals a day. Every single one of my meals is extremely high in protein. I even have protein wheatabix. I have stopped doing too much exercise and now do very minimal exercise like a brisk walk each day. BUT GUESS WHAT. Even though i did all of that this week i still LOST 2 POUNDS. JUST HOW?!

I'm 14yo, 177cm and 48 kg... I eat about 4000 calories per day and still can't gain weight... Few weeks ago I counted every single calorie and almost didn't eat, now I eat and eat and my weight is still the same. Now I can see how stupid I was thinking that one piece of bread can make me FAT...

Start building your weight back up my friend, I turned 20 this year and have been cycling 8 years, started increasing my cycling too much and lowering my food intake while I was at 18.5bmi and now I'm 17.5bmi, ended up in the hospital with insane pains from hunger and chest pains and I would never wish it upon anyone, been a week and I'm barely recovering still, just getting back to work, take care of yourself

The reason I do not feel sorry for overweight people: Achieving your weight goals does not require any capitol investment, just keep your mouth closed, lose weight and save money. For those of us who are thin, not only is it difficult to force your body to eat more, but it costs us a lot of money as well. Seems fair, doesnt it?

I'm 25 and I'm only 45kg with 1.62m .. very petite compared to my companions in work.. I have to say I haven't been focusing on gaining weight due to my work and studying but lately my doctor told me I must build some big muscles before I reach thirties because I have a big chance of developing osteoporosis if I stayed like this so I'm soo stressed.. is there any starters I should know :0 oh god

I did 3500 calories with small meals for about 2 weeks and I simply felt like shit and I couldn't think or do anything but think about what I was going to eat next.

33kg fxxd basically trying to avoid hospital I have low phosphatase and problems with immunity. I thinking I gained a pound or two at most just over 5 stone on mechanical scale with weight. Meeting with pt tomorrow about weight gain diet.

I’m 11 and weigh only 30.25kg I’m underweight i was diagnosed by my doctor when I was 8. I eat and eat but my arms are tiny sticks and my thighs are nonexistent. All my friends are on they’re period and have boobs but I don’t.

I have so much trouble. I am 5’1 (age 15) with a body weight of 87 lbs. I am a literal twig and it makes me so self conscious because I don’t have fat in the places where it is attractive (my chest, buttum, thighs, arms).

Being anorexic forever just hurts me so much and I do really like chicken and fish a lot when my mother, uncle and my uncle's wife cooking really good foods for me to eat because calories can help me a lot and I had stress everyday because of the gloominess on my face and that's why I don't eat solid foods anymore and I also eat liquid foods 😭

I eat a lot of food to gain weight faster, but I end up having diarrhea. Or just poop it out. I don’t usually eat a lot, so maybe that’s why I just poop it out? Example: I just eat one slice of pizza and I’m full. I’m eleven years old and 66 pounds. I don’t understand! I want to die. I can’t gain weight fast, and I’ve seen lots of videos about health risks of being underweight and I’m terrified! 😢

Idk but what i did is to not sleep early, take multivitamins and the most important of all DRINK ALOT OF WATER even though you dont think your thirsty, youll gain weight fast but you have to keep it up or youll lose weight fast too.
