Want to improve your volleyball attacking? This is the video to get you there for all you beginners, (or experienced players looking to fine-tune).
Four key concepts to take away from this video
- Approach
-Route
-Spacing
-Arms
If you can make sure you are taking care of those things each and every time you prepare for a swing you will see your numbers go through the roof. Hope this video helps, lots of pieces to attacking and this is just a small section of it but a vital one.

Great segment on the middle attack, I've played for more than 12 years as a middle, and there really isn't much content on the position that's instructive. One aspect I continually run into is setters confusing a 'quick' set, with a low set. I.e. often when setters opt for a set to the middle it's only marginally above the tape - that ain't gonna work! The height shown in the video is perfect for a middle hit! 🙂

Definitely, don’t think for a second I don’t see the value middle have in the game of volleyball. And to your point, tempo is the name of the game when trying to connect with middles no matter the route or set that is run! Good stuff glad to hear you’re enjoying it more to come for sure.

Great video, super helpful stuff! Curious any thoughts on finding balance between when to tip vs. when to swing hard as an OH? Should one be looking at the opposing team’s defense before making that decision or is it a matter of randomness?
@mitchsterkenburg
@mitchsterkenburg 7 ай бұрын
Glad it was helpful, I prefer to have my players not predetermine what they’re going to do on a play because there’s so many variables and changes that open up if you only give yourself one chance as an attacker. With that said, catching the defense on their heels with tips typically will have the most success after a powerful or strong kill when they retreat back further on defense. I think it’s more feel as an OH than anything else. Outside of that. When the set is bad look to tip the ball to areas on the opposing defense you see as weak. (Campfire, right back in rotations 3 and 6, etc.).

I have a new serving video coming out shortly so keep an eye out for that one. The focus with serving for beginners is to give yourself a solid toss. And make sure you have a wide strong palm open when contacting the ball at the service line for more consistency.

Great video !!! But i have a question when i do 3 steps approach as an Outside Hitter i can't hit the ball at my maximum height, when i jump my highest, my head will be above the ball like 8 inches, is it my fault for jumping this high or the setter fault ? cause when i tell him to raise it he tells me it's perfect and it's my fault !!!! Need your opinion on this one, appreciate on your effort in this video 👍

Good question, the easiest way to connect with your setter on the height of the set is to establish what tempo you want to run. If its a high ball you know it's going to be high, if its a quick ball you know it will be lower and faster. First, get on the same page with your setter, then you know where to expect the ball and regardless of how high you jump you'll know where to hit the ball the best at your peak vertical.

one question should my arms already be raised before my feet leaves the ground when I approach? I notice I cant get a good swing often because my arm swing is too late or rushed.(I play left side/outside hitter)
@mitchsterkenburg
@mitchsterkenburg 7 ай бұрын
Yes they should, typically you start your arms in the approach prior to your last step before you launch into your jump. The later you do it, the less spring you will get and it will be much tougher to close on a ball like you said.

I have a bad habit of swing my legs when hitting. My right leg swings towards the right due to momentum, causing me to land in my left leg first most of the time. Any advice on how to fix this or is it an inevitable outcome that’ll happen now and again…
@mitchsterkenburg
@mitchsterkenburg 7 ай бұрын
Not sure if you’re talking about your first step in your approach being your left foot or the first foot that hits the ground after you jump being your left foot. Either way, it’s not the end of the world if it happens sometimes. Starting the approach with your swinging arm foot will typically lead to a more balanced approach but I’ve seen it done other ways where people have been effective.

Was referencing the number of steps back off the net not the approach here. So 2-3 steps whatever you can get off will work for the timing.

Also, could you explain why the libero moved the way he did in the first clip
@mitchsterkenburg
@mitchsterkenburg 7 ай бұрын
Certainly, the libero started in serve receive on the play. Once our outside hitter passed the ball he moved to his defensive base position (zone 5). After serve receive the players in the back row switch to their defensive positions.
