How To Get 285s To Fit On Your Toyota 4Runner! - Will It Rub?

Finally came the upgrade that makes the most visual impact. New wheels and bigger tires. Before this video, we installed a stage 1 lift kit from Icon as well. The wheels are the Range HD from Fifteen52. And the specs are 17x8.5 with a 0 offset. The tires are Mickey Thompson Baja Boss M/T in a 285/70/17. We had to remove the front mud flaps and do some trimming on the front bumper to get full steering movement without rubbing. Stay tuned for our viper cut video and more! Been running 285/65/18 DuraTracs on Fuel wheels w/ +2mm offset since I got my 4Runner in 2018... 👍🏻 Bilstein 5100's @ 2.5", plus 1.5" Eibach rear lift springs.

I put 285/70/17’s on my stock 2wd 4Runner. No trimming, no rubbing. Mounted on steel spare wheels.

This shows the importance of offset. I'm guessing the offset of the steel wheels is slightly positive or zero.

Can you tell me a backspace recommendation for running 285s please. I already read forums. Or if you can tell me if 17x8 (+18offset) will rub. They are the wheels that come with the "T FORCE" package. It is apparently 17in tundra wheels I'm assuming. They are TSS wheels.

Well our wheels are 17x8.5 with a 0 offset. So you should have fewer problems than us because your wheels sit in more. Just have to watch that you don't hit your sway bar while turning. If so then you'll have to put a spacer on to clear it.

My guess is you're going to have to lift it more or you will have issues with the tire rubbing the body mount.

@@yotaxpedition it’s actually the opposite. The higher your lift, the more your suspension droops, bringing it closer to the body. Then, by adding spacers, your increasing amount of space the tire needs to turn (the wheel does not turn on its own axis, the further away from the axis it turns, the more space it needs to make the turn). Your best chance of fitting 33’s with little to know rub is by doing nothing, leaving the cv axels level. You can most likely do that with either no modification, or by removing only the rear mud flap.

Even when you do a suspension lift, the tires will still move into the positions that would allow them to touch the truck. A lift will not solve the issue, unless you're literally never going off road. Then it might help, because large amounts of articulation during tight turning would likely be very rare.

Question what modifications have you done to recover horse power after you installed the bigger tires?

Nothing. There's not that big of a difference. A Pedal Monster would help, its not going to change horsepower but will make your throttle response quicker.

I wish more manufacturers would make a 33x10.5x17. Most oversized tires on the 5th gen are too wide for anything but sand and similar surfaces.

Less mpgs, You might feel a decrease in acceleration, and you might have to do modifications to make them fit. But you don't buy a 4Runner to be fast or get good mpg anyway

2021 4runner 285 70 17 wild peaks on method 703’s here. Absolutely no rubbing. Do not worry. Buy 0 offset and sleep worry free. I finally pulled the trigger and it has full lock no rubbing.

We have an ICON Stage 1 lift kit installed. The front coilovers we're installed exactly how they came out of the box. Roughly 2.75" up front and 2.25" in the rear.

@@darvinbordenii5657mt tires cleats on tire are way bigger that A/T tires… most stock 5th gens will hold a 285 with a 2” lift w/o mud flap but remember a lift does nothing for bigger tire fitment! I’m stuck on 275 or 285 just due to the amount of cutting needed to have the fit properly with no rubbing off-road

It'll be close. Also depend on what wheels you go with. Your width and offset will play a huge role in how much you rub. These wheels are 17x8.5 et0 from fifteen52.

With the negative offset wheels you might have to trim some plastic on the bumper and remove the front mud flaps.

I have 3" lift with 17 x 8.5 -10 offset and and a 1.25" spidertrax wheel spacers on a 285/70r17 bfg tires, I also did the bumper trim and mudflap removed but I'm rubbing on the metal part on full lock turn and reverse. Any ideas why? I don't want to get bmc just yet but maybe if I take the spacers out, it "could" clear it? Any thoughts? THANKS!! Just wanted the aggressive look without thug..thug..thug..thugs..🤣

They are correct, your spacers are probably the issue. The farther your wheels stick out the more rubbing issues you are going to have. Maybe you can get a smaller spacer like 1" and that will help enough but still give you that aggressive look you're going for. Otherwise your options are take the spacers off, do the BMC or just let it keep rubbing lol.

I am running LT265/70-17 Mickey T Baja boss tires with black rhino arsenal rims with -18 offset on my 2022 SR5 with no lift kit but I’m getting rub only in reverse on front . Need help please Don’t want to reduce aggressive look. Is there something less aggressive I can put on that won’t give me this issue? Any advice that can help with no rub and high speed steering shake

Your wheel offset is the issue. You need something less aggressive. Or removing your mud flaps should help.

285s with no lift kit will not fit. You will hit your body mount behind the tire.

Suspension lift does nothing for tire fitment and to fit 285 with no rubbing you have to cut bumper removal of mud flaps and do BMC otherwise if you go off road you will rub! Each vehicle comes different from factory slightly and 285 will fit stock but you will rub; 285 will also fit with 2” lift but will rub seems to me 275 just seem to be the way to go for no cutting cause lots knows to caster out is not the answer either

Yes your mpg will drop a bit. You'll have a little more road noise. A happy medium would be to go with a A/T and not a M/T

Looks great, i love the viper cut look! Could you guys do a video of this flexed on a ramp to see if it rubs at or near bump stop? I see a lot of videos showing at normal ride height but hard to find people showing whether they rub at or near bump stop. The viper cut is really ugly. I don’t like it at all. It destroys the look of the vehicle. I think if you just followed the original contour of the wheel well you would have a much better looking product that still gives you the clearance you need.
