Yes, you were right by thinking that HDMI provide superior resolution. You just need a USB-C to HDMI 2.1.

@@321ali I’m not home right now, and don’t quote me, but having both an HDMI as well as the usb-c to display port hooked up gives me like alllll of the resolution choices. 2 things- if you try to resolute more than like 41xx by 1440, IMO is too small and almost looks blurrier than the 38 by 14. And #2- with them both hooked up it the built in monitor speakers don’t work, but that’s something I haven’t dove into yet. If I’m just messing around and wanting speakers, Ive been 38x14 and adjust to it fast

Would usb-c with 1.4 cable still provide fast data transfer rate? I was reading thunderbolt provides 40gbs rather that 10gbs would that make much of a difference on refresh rate? Another way: Go to monitor menu, go to systems, and change your display port input version from 1.4 to 1.2 and the 5120 x 1440 resolution should show up. Make sure you are using a displayport 1.4 to usb c cable. Neo G9 user manual recommends keeping display port cable length to under 1.5 meter for best performance. Idk if that matters here, but just be aware.

Agreed, after updating to Ventura I had to flip it back to 1.2, but then I only got 60hz refresh. Could go back to 1.4 and then tune it to 120hz.

Thanks for the video. I bought an LG 49 inch ultrawide and was able to get the resolution to 5120x1440 at 120hz on my Mac mini 2018 model via HDMI. The problem I feel is that everything is way too small (the font, the icons, menu bars, etc.). Is that how it’s supposed to be or is there some settings I should change? I don’t see a scaling option in the Display section (Ventura OS). My current solution is to make all the settings on large for font and changed my Google Chrome magnification to 125%.

Hey, great video... I'm running the AGON AG493UG7R4 on a 2013 MacBook Pro... lucky for me the MPB comes with 2 x mini display ports, and happy runs 2x2560x1440 screens using the AGON picture-by-picture option... did need to use SwitchResX to get the Mac to show 2560x1440 for each monitor... best 14euros I've spent, but I'm sure the truely gifted could find a way to change the available display options... last thing to fix will be the colour correction on the second screen, AGON tints the PBP to indicate that it is a different feed... a problem for another day...

@@jameswightman6347 I tested on an M1 Mac Mini and it didn’t work. That is actually a limitation on the Mini and the max resolution it can drive through the HDMI port. I don’t have an MBP with an HDMI, so when hooking up my 2019 MBP, I only use DisplayPort. I have read that some Windows based machines can drive that resolution and refresh through HDMI, so depending on what Apple is supporting, it may work.

I have a new 49" wide screen monitor. I only have a thunderbolt to HDMI cable. I would not mind not getting the 5k resolution because I cannot see text that small anyway and always downgrade to a lower number. However, I do not have any resolution to choose from that is the right ratio. All my choices are the usual 16:9 ration. Before I go buy a thunderbolt to display port cable, is it reasonable to think that this will fix the issue with not having a 32:9 ratio? TY

Hey, thanks for making this. Unfortunately this didn't work for me. I am using a 1.4 USB-C to Displayport cable direct from an i7 16" MacBook Pro running Monterey into a Samsung 49" G95T Ultrawide. None of the options worked for me unfortunately. If I do manage to select 5120 x 1440 anywhere, the screen actually just runs 3840x1080. I've tried SwitchResX, EasyRes, cscreen, and sacrificing chickens. Nothing. I suspect there is now some nasty override in the OS somewhere which says "hey anytime you see 5120 x 1440, just do 3840 x1080 instead, lol". And you're right - this works PERFECTLY on my PC. Which is great. If I used my PC all day every day, which I don't. I think what would be useful is a "back to defaults" video, to remove any nasty workarounds and get any screen settings back to complete vanilla, as that would be a very useful fresh start.

Still having trouble? This is WAAAAY late, but I just ran into the issue myself and found a resolution (no pun intended, lol). I made a comment as well -------------- I found a buried stack overflow answer that said to set the display port version "on the monitor" to use version 1.2 which worked for me as well. I am using a DP1.4 usb-c to display port cable with the monitor set to use DP1.2. Weird, but it works.

Hi Luis. In fact, I'm using my Philips 499P9 since I had my old Retina 2012 (with dedicated 650M GPU) using SwitchResX. Those days, I was forced to use 30Hz, now I have a i9 MBP with a Radeon Pro 5500M (from my employer, since I'm a developer) and my own Macbook Air M1 and… I still am unable to get more frequency! If I use only HDMI for one of the monitors, it shows full res but when I connected both displays 49" , it only down scales. I don’t do any video or photo editing so the most demand I would place on the Mac would be having multiple Office 365 documents and PDFs open with maybe Netflix or KZbin playing in the background. That is why I am considering using the base model however, I would really like to run this display for productivity purposes. Thank you in advance for your time and advice!

This is the 8 core version. I don't see the base model being a big difference in performance or not able to display this resolution. Might even want to wait to see if the new models will release by the end of the year. Thanks for the support!

Apples HDMI is the bottleneck... You must use USB-C with thunderbolt or USB-C to Display Port...

Holding Option and then selecting Scaled doesn't seem to do anything for me. The best resolution I'm offered is 3840x1080

All those tutorials are the same useless. Like there is someone dumb enough not to figure out to open display settings. I'm wasting my time watching videos like this one when trying to find tutorials how to get it work with BetterDisplay or similar when for example 120hz isn't available

Just get a PC. I find this pretty disappointing for Apple to have these issues.
