Hey, Marcheeen, when you mention between the plasterboard panels, are you referring to the scrim tape? This will either be filled if dry lined or plastered over, so it won't affect the airtightness. Let me know if I've misunderstood your question

@ Yes, thanks, that’s it. I had read somewhere that plaster, unlike sand and cement, is not airtight. So was wondering if any special tape would be required or if that is necessary at all.

@@marcheeeen@marcheeeen, Use the standard scrim tape. The filler or plaster will be airtight. Make sure the adhesive has a continuous bead around the outside of the plasterboard, or paint the blockwork with a liquid VCL-like passive purple. You will need to weigh up costs, etc

I get the impression that traditional construction methods make for a lot of work to achieve airtightness. I wonder if a SIP built house would have less time spent on airtightness.

While SIPs offer significant benefits, in our experience, we've found that focusing attention on wall junctions and roofs is essential for achieving optimal airtightness. These areas often require extra care and precision to ensure a robust seal against air infiltration. Nonetheless, SIPs do provide a solid foundation for airtight construction and can streamline the process, particularly when combined with meticulous attention to detail in critical areas.

@@atspaceltd654 thanks for the additional information. When I saw the purple coating, I thought maybe it could be applied by spray gun and that could achieve better coverage…especially in hard to reach areas.

You're welcome! The passive purple can be applied either by brush or by spray to ensure better coverage. We recommend conducting a diagnostic air leakage test after the sealing process. This helps identify any air leakage and determines the current permeability rate. With this information, you'll have a clearer idea of how much additional sealing may be needed.
