This is a video showing the process to get a car inspected, registered, and insured in Japan. Known as Shaken, this is the inspection, registration, tax, and insurance process in Japan.

I tried to document and describe all the steps, so people in Japan can do themselves and people outside of Japan can see how complex it is.

Hello, I’m moving to Yamagata from Boston next year. I’m hard headed and determined to bring my car. You’re totally right about the culture… it’s almost unheard of for people to fix their own car. I have a 2000 VW Jetta VR6… it’s supercharged. It’s not excessively loud, but it’s not exactly quiet. I heard your car having some engine noise… or music as I like to call it. Did they give you a hard time about that?

Hey Karl, Good luck bringing your car to Japan, I've heard it's a very difficult process. You can find great condition 20 year old European cars in Japan. But, I do regret not bringing my Porsche 964 when I moved here 13 years ago, as prices are crazy high now. Unfortunately I didn't try because I was told that to ship and get everything to conform to Japanese regulations is not worth the effort. The Boxster had the stock exhaust system and wasn't very loud. I had a Mazda Roadster (NB Miata) previously which had an aftermarket large rear muffler. It wasn't a problem at the inspection, but they will look carefully at any modifications during the shaken test.

What is going on with the license plate bolts on the back of Japanese cars? I noticed almost all of them have a small bolt in the top right corner of the plate, and I really large bolt in the top left corner.

Hey, the rear plate has a security cap/cover on the top left bolt. It can’t be removed easily without mangling it. I guess it’s a theft prevention thing.

@@diyforlife2809 That's not cheap, but only every two years. It seems that your girlfriend was invaluable with all the paperwork. I can see how a service would make it more expensive. TY
