Being a financial analyst, how important are your communication and prioritization skills as it relates to working on a team? I come from a public accounting tax background, fast paced and heavily reliant on individual team members performing; I’d like to leverage that experience but not sure if analysts are as typically team oriented
@FinanceUnboxed
@FinanceUnboxed 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, those two skills are critical in my opinion. You'll work in teams most if not all the time as an FA. Being able to communicate and work well with others is something you'll be judged on heavily. Similarly, prioritisation is important as you'll normally be working on multiple deliverables at the same time so being able to distinguish between important tasks and those that aren't is essential. Hope this helps 🙂

@@FinanceUnboxed Wonderful, thank you for your response! If I could inquire further - how would you compare a roll of a senior in public accounting to that of a senior analyst? Commonalities I would assume would be reviewing analysts deliverables and managing day-to-day of projects, giving both upward and downward updates on state of project. I've also noticed in accounting, I've gotten quite a bit more removed from performing actions within our software however my attention to detail is on another level; as is expected of the senior role.

My question is since I’m unable to know & understand which industry I really like and want to work in, can you suggest a way to figure this out? 2. What skills are required apart from degrees/certifications like CIMA,CFA,etc to stand out from other FP&A applicants?

Hey, 1. Think about what sectors you like to read/learn about in your spare time. This doesn't necessarily have to be finance related but could be learning about recent developments etc 2. Commercial awareness is a good skill to have. So, understanding what are the latest trends in certain sectors and consumer behaviour etc. What drives company performance in the sector. Also, MS Excel skills. Hope this helps 😀

Great advise for someone your age, but what about mid/late career switchers? I'm more qualified now than I was 20 years ago, but I don't see anyone who can switch. People will say 'they need people' or 'you are certainly qualified,' but the age discrimination in the US is unreal. There is so much help out there for 20-something or returning moms, but no one cares about the mid career folks (men particularly) with education, qualification and experience and aptitude, but if there is no brand name on the resume, you get rejected. I don't get it.

Hey Alex. Taking the CFA Level 1 proves your enthusiasm for building a career in Finance and naturally you'll pick up some technical skills along the way as well. Hi Joshua, thanks for the message. I agree that finding the path you feel is right is challenging, especially as you may feel there is a large sunk cost involved going down the wrong route initially. However, I think there is value in exploring a few routes at the start, even though they might not lead to be your longer term career path. I suppose what I'm trying to convey is that you might not get it right the first time, but don't stress about it too much. When making the decision, think about where your strengths and interests lie and which roles offer the chance the develop a wide range of skills. You can develop a specialist skill set further down the line. Best of luck.

@@angelcabrera5408 oh jeez I’m so sorry I never responded to this!!! Honestly to get a break into a brokerage firm you don’t need a finance background. Some people on my team never went to college and their last jobs were something in retail. I have a “degree” (its general studies lol) and it’s very sparingly assisted with anything. Even those with finance or math degrees have said it hasn’t helped much. If you’re wanting to get into an internship, I’d highly recommend learning about the culture of the company you’d apply for and try to speak with a manager or recruiter before you submit an app for the program. Lots of companies do college outreach. Even if you don’t land an internship, most firms will hire and train you and pay for licensing. You just have to be very eager to learn and coachable.

Hey, to build knowledge you can take free online Finance courses on websites such as Coursera. There are also some good tutorials on KZbin. Maybe look at the syllabus for a university Finance course and use that as a structure for which subjects you learn about. Hope this helps.

Hi, I am currently doing a course on LinkedIn "Become a financial analyst(17 h)". I a postgraduate n science back ground and doesn't have any prior experience in this domain. Will this certification makes me land a Job or what are the other things I need to get into a Job in financial domain?
@FinanceUnboxed
@FinanceUnboxed 2 жыл бұрын
Hey, well done on taking the initiative and doing the course. The certification itself is clearly just one part of the story. Any skills that you can bring across from your previous career will also be important. Doing the course shows that you are serious about a position in the sector and certainly helps your cause. I'd suggest keeping on doing courses if you can, so you can build your technical skills and it'll also look good on applications. Best of luck.

@FinanceUnboxed
@FinanceUnboxed 3 жыл бұрын
Financial analyst roles are available in the Transactions department predominantly. In Consulting, you can join at an entry level and the skills you'll develop are pretty similar to what you'd need for a Financial Analyst role. You can do an articleship in audit and tax but it won't be as a Financial Analyst.
