Eligibility:
-Inability to walk 200 feet without resting
-Use of portable oxygen
-Cardiac condition classified as Class III or IV by the American Heart Association
-Severe walking limitations due to arthritic, neurological, or orthopedic conditions
-Restricted lung disease with specific respiratory criteria
-Dependence on assistance or assistive devices for walking
-Blindness or impaired vision alone is not sufficient for eligibility
How to Obtain:
-Complete the Physically Disabled Parking Permits and License Plate application (SD Eform-0865 V7).
Submit to the local county treasurer’s office.
Fee:
-No fee for placards.
Validity/Expiration:
-Permanent placards: Issued for more than 1 year, not exceeding 5 years.
-Temporary placards: Issued for less than 1 year.
Renewing Placards:
-Permanent placards: Renew every 5 years, up to 90 days before expiration, no doctor certification required.
-Temporary placards: Renew if a physician certifies the disability will last longer than the one-year issuance limit.
Lost/Replacement:
-Complete the Application For Physically Disabled Parking Permit and License Plates.
-Submit to the local county treasurer’s office.
-Provide placard number if more than one was issued.
-Submit deteriorated placards with the application.
Where to Hang:
-Hang from the rearview mirror when parked in a designated space. Remove when the vehicle is in motion.
