The TSE BOD is a go-to plugin for me when it comes to bass - such a great plugin! I use this similarly to get that gritty-clean(ish) sound and then normally run a duplicate DI track in parallel with a Logic amp sim for the dirtier sound. I have used 2 instances of the BOD to get the same sound before though.

@@canilhan98 it really depends on what I feel it needs. Sometimes I'll just use a guitar amp and drive it hard, high pass/low pass and blend to taste.

Thanks for this! I used to use the TSE BOD on all my projects, back when I was a broke newbie and used only free plugins. When I replaced them all with good stuff a couple years ago, I forgot about it, and only recently dug it up again and rediscovered how useful it was. If I'm doing the tracking myself, I like to use the VT Bass DI, which is their Sansamp with the SVT vibe already baked in, but the BOD is a lifesaver for projects where all I had was a clean DI track. And I'll still use it now for sections that need an additional, grindy thing mixed in.

I recently bought Sphene LE by Audified for 2 dollars. It is RIDICULOUSLY good for the cost. I actually tried it on guitar first for the lolz, as long as blend is 100%, you'll get some fantastic sounds for guitar too. The built in cab is cool, but I switched it off and used god's cab IR with a blend of bright/dark mics. Best in-the-box tone I've ever heard, with the exception of the neural stuff.

The DSP Darkglass is just absolutely perfect imo, you can get basically anything you could ever need with it. It comes with the Microtubes and the Vintage preamps ALONG with a CAB IR reader for it with the well produced IR's. I also like the joey sturgis Hellraiser toneforge for getting insane fat and clanky basstones for something like low-tuned djent.

I'm not big on the sansamp plugins. I could never get what I wanted out of it. I still to this day use guitar amps from Podfarm. As weird as that sounds. Also I finish it off with the CLA bass plugin which sonically completes any bass tone 100%. Great vid btw!

Nice video, the dark glass sounds great mixed with the drums. I'd also recommend the JST hellraiser plugin for bass, you can separate out the lows and highs, individual 'clank' knob and a switch for subharmonic lows. I used to spend hours trying to get these tones between 2 copies of the D.I, just sounds amazing right out of the box.

No one talks about how to do this live. There’s a few ways. Here’s an easy way. You can get this same tone with a few cheaper pedals.. Bass-any od/dist (with a blend knob)-comp(fast release/attack and 4:1-8:1 ratio)-sansamp(max-out the blend knob)-power amp… Turn off od and dial-in the sansamp/comp. Then, turn off the sans/comp and scoop out the lows on the od/dist pedal and add highs/drive to taste. turn the sansamp/comp back on and use the blend knob on the od/dist to taste

Awesome tone and tutorial! I tried the BOD and like it quite a bit! But i like the Brainworx Ampeg SVT-3PRO more. It sounds amazing and i can get tone pretty close to the Darkglass plugin with a tube screamer before the amp! Another signal chain i tried that worked quite well was using the SVT-3PRO for most of the sound and processing a DI in parallel with the Audified Sphene LE (which costs $4) on the most distorted preset, high pass it to taste and blend it in!

great timing, i've been down the bass mixing rabbit hole lately. FYI for mac users who aren't on pro tools, Nembrini PSA1000 seems to be a close match. I need to just buy it and give it a run. TSE BOD does sound great but I can't seem to get quite the same "clacky" presence on pick attack with it. It's been helpful though to blend in overall body for the bass sound. I have a physical Darkglass pedal around here somewhere (the vintage one) but seeing the plugin in action, seems like a valuable tool to control in real-time. It's so hard to commit to sounds like that during tracking, particularly when you might want to stack 3 or 4 instances of the same bass performance as you've done here to achieve the final sound. thanks for putting this together!

PS - Kush plugins REDDI does a fantastic job adding fullness and life to a bass track. I've had the recent epiphany that just plugging a bass directly into an Apogee Duet interface might record a clean track, but it's missing some magic that happens in more professional setups. I've started to wonder how much I've been overmixing to compensate for something like the simple lack of a DI box preceding what captures the signal. Same on mic'ed tracks, mainly vocals.

I don't see the Artist Mix, don't you use that anymore? Replaced with Fader Port it seems? I use Sansamp/muliband compression/EQ and blend it with the DI. Here's a tip for you: use a spectral designer, e. g. SPL, to fresh up a boring DI track. Or really boost the sustain in a much cleaner way than distortion will do. It kind of like going from a passive to a active bass pickup. It can sometimes save a poor recorded guitar DI too... Cheers mate! 😊

Been using the sans amp plug in. I've used my svt4 pro for years going in as my di. I go for the cleaner full tone first then I bus or duplicate the track and add sans amp to bring up the drive or crunch for the song.

I using the Dsp..with darkglass..for bass .. DSP Nolly,NTS for gutars.. and ezdrummer2 to program drums.. all within logic prox..I want to spend .ore time creating music that sounds pro. While streamlining it as mu h as possible any tips tricks advice for this workflow would be a blessing.. Pick/fingers, and style of approach (along with a bass players ability to self-level), has everything to do with what any plugin can do. My biggest issues I find is that the bass player is very inconsistent and his instrument of choice is not setup correctly. Once they are in the studio with thier fav rig...its kind of a moot point, we're fixing problems...not enhancing tone. Enhancing tone comes after the "fixing".

most of these plugins cause a pretty heavy scoop. the bass "sits" perfectly but tends to disappear. gotta be careful with your mids. i guess it also depends on the project. if what a band wants is a wall of precise guitar/bass, then distinguishing one from the other isn't particularly critical. i think of a lot of "rise-core" in this example.
