Thank you for all of your videos, they're very informative and helpful. I'm currently finishing up the CPC on-line course and preparing for the exam. I did this once before in 2014, in person course for 10 weeks, passed the exam on the first try, couldn't get a job. Everybody wants experienced coders, even the ones that say they are "entry level" positions.Even with a RN background. Still a nurse, trying this again. I think the RN throws people off because of the pay. I'm willing to take the pay cut...for now. I know I'm going to be really good at this and I really love coding. I'm going to reach out to Project Resume. I think that may at least help get my resume looked at.

Whether or not to address resume gaps directly on your resume is really open to debate. For me, I think it would just make my resume too long. The less a recruiter reads, the better. They all have limited time on their hands when going through hundreds of resumes, so you need to be direct and to the point. Ultimately, I would rather leave it to them to ask about the gaps themselves during the interview. Why you would get your resume passed up because you have gaps is absolutely illogical. Recruiters have a responsibility to ask about those, and you should be ready with answers for each and every gap. And speaking of answers, that's another issue. You could easily lie about the gaps, right? I've done it before and succeeded with getting jobs. And don't be shy about being creative with your answers either. Naturally, a top answer would be "I just couldn't find a job." Generally, I hate it when HR asks about gaps because that answer is legitimately what you could say and a very obvious choice. t could easily be true too. You obviously don't get calls from every application that you send in. Another answer that could be true is if you said that you were in school for something (just be ready to show proof of that, like a certificate or diploma). Other answers include taking care of family members, and my personal favorite if you have a significantly long gap: I traveled abroad with my significant other who took a job in another country and he/she supported me. Another potential answer is that you fell into clinical depression for a year or two, although that might not be the best thing to say lol. Some employers can discriminate against you for mental illness, which is absolutely wrong and unethical, but I digress. There are a myriad of ways to answer the gap question, but again, the area of debate is whether to put those on your resume or not.

Maybe this is a topic for another video but what are some of the most common medical coding software programs that companies use? It would be nice to know and try to familiarize myself/yourself with the software when applying for a job. That way you can add it to your resume or application like you would MS Word, Excel, Publisher, etc.

Should we put irrelevant previous jobs in the work experience section of a resume? I just got my CPC-A and I have never had a coding job. Do I put work experience on the resume if it doesn’t relate to coding?

Hi Victoria! Thank you for your channel and your wealth of knowledge. Question for you. Is medical billing a good stepping stone to coding? Any info is greatly appreciated. Have a good day!
@PublicExecution
@PublicExecution Жыл бұрын
I would say yes and no. If you're working in medical billing in an in-person setting, then perhaps some networking with the coding people can help get your foot in the door. But it's best to go for specific training in coding. As a medical biller, you just see the codes themselves without knowing how they got there and then submit documentation with them for payment. Bottom line is that if you're really interested in coding, then just go for that.

@@PublicExecution can you elaborate on what good training would look like in a medical coding job? Any info is appreciated 😊
@PublicExecution
@PublicExecution Жыл бұрын
@@yolanda080 there are plenty of online programs that provide training, but the most important thing to find are schools with 80 clock hours of instruction. That's SO important because if you complete a program like that, one year is completely wiped away from removing the apprentice designation of your CPC credential (you have to take and pass the CPC exam first, of course). Then if you do Practicode through AAPC, that's the second and final year removed. If you watched Contempo's video on what she would do differently as a first time coder, she said exactly this. She went through a program that was not 80 hours and got screwed with removing the A designation. She then had to work at a job first.

If you have a background in working at a medical office is it easier to get a job after finishing CPC? I worked at united healthcare as a benefit advocate and now a large medical practice doing customer service and eligibility. Do you think I have a chance getting a coding job after I get my cpc?
