This presentation is very resourceful, insightful and comprehensive enough for 'one' to confidently approach publishing. It is tough to admit but it has demystified the process in a manner far more articulately than the lectures I attended during my studies. Thank you Dr. Clare Llewellyn, You are a great inspiration.

An extremely helpful presentation. Thank you. On correct writing. In my own field (electrical power delivery), if I find a single mistake, I stop reading. Forty years of experience have taught me that the ability to write is correlated with the ability to think. Though not perfect, the correlation is strong enough to have been a useful guide in my efforts to make my work as beneficial as possible.

Excellent presentation that makes an important point about knowing all the factors that determine whether a paper is accepted or rejected. If you don't know or understand the criteria by which your manuscript will be judged, your chances of success are greatly diminished. It's especially important for early career researchers to know these criteria and actively address them when writing their papers for publication.

thank you so much. I just changed my article title and abstract after watching what you proposed it to be. but I dont agree on inviting a native co author and having no typo, this is sort of insulting to non-native speakers. Humans make mistake and our knowledge of English language and its vocabulary is not always perfect and stable. We forget certains things and learn new ones as life goes by depending on how much we are interacting in a particular language. THE MOST DECISIVE criteria shall be the results and findings of a research.

"if there is even some typo in the paper, I would reject it straight away." I agree it should not be horribly written, but I think it is some biasness for researchers whose first language is not English. It makes lots of difference how you express it, which should not happen for technical research. After all, are you going to read/expect an English literature essay/Novel or a scientific research paper with data and findings? I think editor with that mentality is making it a lot difficult for especially researchers and universities from Asia, Africa, South America. The language was supposed to be just a medium of expression. But has not been so as speaker divulged(she must be an editor in some journal as well) and many good papers rejected just because of reviewer not liking the language or command on "English" language. I don't know how it is not racism or biases in terms of language? Language overweighting the facts. Sadly, which has been widespread in the field of "academic" intellectuals as well.

Mr Frank I agree with you. One of my friend who is specialised in linguistics was mentioning that any ENGLISH is ok as per past research in social sciences and humanities. It's only in recent times that every journal is looking for polished way and are rejecting for typo errors. Luckily my reviewers have been kind enough to point those mistakes as happens due to oversight, and my editor suggested to change certain things in low tone. I know everybody won't be like that.. So, nowadays it's more of cosmetic stuff rather than natural... So with journals and publications...

Very true. I'm not sure if it's coincidence or not, but such standards seem to be imposed by monolingual institutions or individuals.
@DerJayger

Agreed. It's even more: It's dismissing a paper that might be really good in aspects that matter. A really weird weighting of criteria.
@divyanshisrivastava2453
@divyanshisrivastava2453 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. It's so weird that you'd dismiss something because it doesn't fit your standards of language.

This is all great but for a great chance of publishing a manuscript you need a combination of good writing and scientific revision. There are good companies like manuscriptbuilder, editage, etc which can do this. I guess it is all depends how fast and higher impact you want to go.

Impact is damage, you want effect. English is a language, not a game. ☆ What happens if one simply has something novel to offer for assessment? After eight years, nothing.

I see a little bit of racism here regarding the absolutely no typos in the initial manuscript submitted to the journal. Not everyone's first language is English and Racism is not just the matter of inequality between black and white people, it happens in many forms and this is I believe one of them

If you address the cover letter to the editor-in-chief you are very likely to get it wrong. It almost never gets to her/him, at least at the beginning. I don't think it's that bad though.
