Subscribers, just like XP in D&D is just a good marker for progression and possible hot content posted. If anything, it's a good way to see where you are towards the next KZbin Milestones, 1k, 100k, 1mil (man that factoring jump), and so on. It also can allow ways of seeing what content was interesting enough to pull people in with subscriber spikes and so on. After that, just as you mentioned, subscriber counts are pointless as we want return viewers really driving the point home.
