How To Get a Stuck Drone Out of a Tall Tree

Thank you so much for this video. Had a Holy Stone HS 100 stuck about 35 feet in the top of an oak tree. Used a baseball with twine duct taped to it. Was able to throw the ball clear of the drone to a group of nearby limbs to move the tree. Was looking to do just a recovery but it fell to a lower group of branches and my neighbor was able to successfully catch it! No damage at all. Thank you so much again.

How long did you make the rod? I’ve got a drone stuck anywhere from 35-50feet up, so far been trying to knock it loose with water bottle

Ouch, a pine tree is rough because it gets wider with each layer. It would also likely gobble up anything you try throwing at it. I hope it works out to retrieve it! -Webby

Thanks for the idea. Got my DJI mini 2 out of our silver birch. All I had to hand was a croquet ball and a length of electric fencing tape. Worked a treat though. Carpet taped the electric fence tape around the ball and launched it with an under arm bolas throwing technique.

I've gotten it stuck many times, I've used pvc pipes that I connected together to make a 15ft pole, I've used a grappling hook to do this simular method, but it's nice because you just have to grapple onto a branch instead of pulling it over.

1" nut and 100lbs fishing line has worked well for me, that one looked pretty high, well done.

Thank you, so much, for this video. Didn’t have a water balloon launcher, but was able to get cordage. Glad I played a lot of baseball, because after about 10-15 throws, I was able to get my drone out of a 80’+ spot in a Leyland cypress. They’re thick, too. I don’t know if I would’ve thought of this. Was about to cut the tree down! 😂 haha. Thanks for helping me save my drone!

I was using waypoints to fly the drone,, sent it this afternoon out on its journey, with the waypoints set for high enough above all the trees, but then I suddenly got a high winds warning on my controller, so hit RTH, but the drone vanished, and never made it back. According to the controller map, the drone was somewhere in a treed area (not sure if in the high trees or on the ground), and about 200 meters from me. I followed the map, and looked for it using the "Find My Drone" tracker on my controller. I scoured the area and the grounds, and found nothing. The trees were so high and dense that I could not figure out where it was. I looked for my drone for over an hour, then eventually gave up. DJI wouldn't allow me to buy the insurance beforehand when I asked, so oh well, it's just $1000 down the toilet. Gotta love drones.

A friend says I should get a party balloon filled with helium and tie a string to that with a hook and slowly have it ascend to the drone and lift it off! That should provide a few hours of entertainment!

My drone has been stuck high up in the huge tree in my back yard for 8 months now. We’ve tried almost everything with no luck. Now that the branches are bare with the leaves almost all off we are trying again. I can’t tell you how many hours we’ve spent trying to get that darn thing out of the tree. ONE day though, it will come down. Probably broke........lol

Fantastic update: once all the leaves fell off the tree and we had a some wind, it fell out on its own! Only 9 months in the tree and it still works!!!!! 😱😁

Mine has been in a tree for two years now! I tried tying extension poles together but they are heavy and bend! I put my fishing reel on my bow and attached the line to an arrow and kept getting close by never just right as the drone is stuck on a broken branch high on a limb and the short branch is holding it tight. I can see the propellers spinning in the wind! Hurricanes have not brought it down yet! I tied a weighted treble hook to twined and would spin it around and fling it the 50 feet up but that didn't work either! Going to restart my recovery campaign and try the water balloon launcher next!

I spent an hour one day at a park kicking a soccer ball straight up into a tree to retrieve my RC plane. I got a lot of strange looks from people because all they saw was me kicking a ball straight up over and over again lol. Haven’t gotten a drone stuck in a tree yet but I’ve planned in my head how to retrieve it when I do.

Mines stuck in a similar sized tree but its in someone's back yard and also its in a 1 meter wide path with sheds and bird averies each side..there is also a thunderstorm coming tomorrow :(

Guys, please.It's been 4 days now and nothing. I got my DJI FPV stuck on a damn tree of about 50ft tall. I've tried it all. Buying a cheaper drone to cross a twine(stuck in there too), PVC poles tight together, but they bend at about 30ft. Bought telescopic poles of 24ft tighted, and reinforced. Broke one didn't want to risk the other one. I mean.. a lot of things. Trying this one now.

Due to the fact I had the propeller guards on it, there really wasn't any damage to the drone (it landed on the guards as well). However, it probably wouldn't have gotten stuck in the first place if it wasn't for the guards, LOL. I learned to only use the guards if flying indoors. -Webby

Mine's about 60' up and wedged pretty good. I like the water balloon thrower but unfortunately that requires friends. 😕 I opted for one of those tennis ball throwers for dogs with the same ball/string concept. no luck today. will try again tomorrow.

@@brianahearn7754 So I actually got it! a small rock (for weight) wrapped with twine (like a baseball) wrapped in duct tape, taped to about 150' of contractor's twine was the perfect recipe. I still needed the ball thrower and used a two handed launch to get the "grapple" high enough. Got it hooked on a nearby branch and wiggled it like mad. Unfortunately, it fell out of the tree like a meteor and broke an arm but it was proof of concept!

EddieAndWebby , I think you are correct and with that prop guard on it would probably not have dislodged from wind anyway. I just got lucky , the third time I went to try to try to get it , it was laying on the ground under the tree I flew sideways into. Glad you got it back and unharmed to boot. That’s great , it’s a terrible feeling knowing your drone is stuck anywhere you can’t reach it. It’s taught me to be much more careful , especially orbiting something. EddieAndWebby , yeah , I was going to mention this but figured you had a good reason for using it outdoors. However it is awesome for indoor flying in case you haven’t tried it. I can set in my back bedroom and fly into every room in my house with zero signal loss, I was amazed by this, great way to kill time with the kids on a rainy day . Lol
