One way to make sure that you’re sanding the entire surface, is to spray it with a light coat of water based spot trace. That’s from my yacht painting days. It forces you to sand everything, whether you want to or not. A rigid sponge sanding block is good too. BTW, you do excellent work!

Thanks Tom. In auto painting they use something similar called a guide coat. It’s usually used for leveling off primer etc before painting.

The sand and polish is my favourite part 👀. I's nice to hear someone who knows what they're talking about. There's so much bad advice around painting and finishing in general. Watch that mic lol. I always use water. No need to make things wet enough that water is running into holes, and I hate dust everywhere (I guess I prefer mud everywhere 😂). Right edges. Paint pools on flats, so it creeps away from edges. On top of that, edges are naturally going to get a lot more pressure from sanding than distributed pressure over flat areas.
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 3 жыл бұрын
Ya, I hear way too many people saying they have sanded through their finishes and it’s almost always on edges unfortunately.

Hi Brad, I know you read your messages and you don't have to respond but I wanted to say to you THANK YOU ! 2k is the best clear ever for amateur painters, The results on my bass were awesome and didn't even polished it, I left it as is and it perfect(near perfect but Budget wise it wise perfect). I follow every steps of your video and I did my way for one step and it was a pain in the ass, I filled ash wood with Varathane floor varnish and it took me like 20 coats and in some place it wasn't filled enough. But the last step is the best, and that product is a kick ass product(you should have some cash reward) from spray max. All in all, I did a pro job for around 175 $ canadian. If any viewers have questions you can ask me too lol, I've watch all videos and I still have my sheets that I handwrote for number of coats and drying times for each steps(sealing-priming-painting-Clearing). In my experience I do not ever need to go more than 1200 grit (unless it is a tiny scratch i go 4000 wet) and then use a polisher (machine) with a compound. Yes It may take me one more minute or so more but it is more controllable.

This video has put me off the idea of spraying my own guitar, and I now have a better appreciation for why finished bodies cost what they do. I could handle the spraying well enough I think, but the sanding and polishing looks hard, and seems to require way more equipment that I am prepared to buy. Impressive finish though and I love that colour!

It has happen with water but I find a way around it by using solarez sealer. Use mask but once it is sealed it is great. Be mindful of drilled holes when wet sanding unless you have the skill to drill after paint. I seal, sand smooth, drill, paint, finish. Paint in holes act as sealer from water. Not a 100 fool proof but it helps. Poly give it hell.

Hi! Great video. Today i made 3 layer of 2K spray max, and i would like to ask you how days should i wait until i set up the guitar body? Thank you!
@BradAngove
@BradAngove Жыл бұрын
If you’re going to sand and polish, do it within 1-2 days. I would wait a week to set it up, but technically you should be able to after about 1-2 days as well.

Brad, quick question.... I’m following this procedure exactly (grey sandable primer>duplicolor>spray maxx 2k) Do I have to use a sanding sealer on the bare wood body if I’m going to use sandable primer ? I have a kit guitar with bare wood and I did a test piece yesterday and it came out pretty nice but I’m worried about putting the primer straight to bare 🪵 wood over time as people on forums say it could soak into the wood eventually and ruin my finish. Your advice would be greatly appreciated!
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 3 жыл бұрын
Once the primer dries it shouldn’t be soaked in more. I would say you don’t need sealer. If you’re concerned, do a quick grain fill before the primer instead.
@Crescent_Audio
@Crescent_Audio 3 жыл бұрын
@@BradAngove thank you Brad, I ended up doing grain filler/wood repair type stuff that had bondo in it, sealed the body nicely, then did primer>laquer and it came out pretty nice so far, now I’m waiting for the clear coat. I’ll post a vid with my results. Thank you for making these videos you’re an immense help to all of us. You rock. Ps...it’s 92% humidity where I live in Texas for the last week, the weather down here sucks for painting and in general.

I’ve struggled a lot with when to move to the next higher grit sandpaper. A number of times I’ve gotten up to 2000 or 2500 and I find that I cant remove some of the previous scratches. Do you have any tips on that?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 4 жыл бұрын
Try switching to sanding in a single direction at those higher grits so that it’s easier to see what impact you’re having on the prior scratches.

Hey Brad I have followed your process to the T. Would it be ok to let the spraymax 2k cure for a week before level sanding? TIA! You're awesome!

Yes, that’s fine. The only issue is it will harden more and thus be more work to polish.

Hi, is it possible to fix/ hide a crack in a Poly finish, by sanding the clear coat and respraying with 2k clear and polishing
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 3 жыл бұрын
A full on crack will be hard to hide completely, but you should be able to make it much less apparent by doing that.
@alanlevesque7180

You should try "I can't believe it's not laquer." Brushes on, lays flat and cures in about 5 minutes with a UV light. You can sand immediately and it's easy to sand.

That’s sounds pretty unreal.

I watched someone else use it. However, I'm restoring a guitar I built in the 90's and I'm going to use the stuff on it. It cures really hard and it's easier to level sand than lacquer. What you don't use you just pour back into the can.

I see a lot of videos where the person puts finger grease all over their paint job. Do you ever fasten your sand paper to the sanding block with double stick tape?
@BradAngove

I used to fasten it using spray adhesive. I don’t bother now. The paint job is already done, so a bit of oil won’t hurt anything.

Hi Brad, I sanded through some 2K to the base color. I reshot the sanded spot and do not spend $24.00 for 2K for a light touch up. Will Minwax 33050000 Fast-Drying Polyurethane do battle with 2K? The Minwax is much cheaper.

"wet on wet" technique, but only for well prepared surfaces, fast and easy. Great job Brad! I have a question, on these guitar kits the fretboard is completely ready to install? The neck is varnished? The frets are installed? I wanted to buy a ZW style guitar but i have to wait over of 4 months (!) so i start to think to buy such guitar kit and make my own, but i have no idea about the condition that they sell these guitar kits.

If you had to finish a guitar in your living space where you breathe, how would you do it, and what finish products would you use? That's my exact situation. Hope you kick butt in the buildoff. Use your big-boy spray gun 😉

The only guitar I finished inside my living space was done with a product called "Tru-Oil". It doesn't run off your family members or get the "look" from the wife. Nothing else was used other than sandpaper and steel wool...and a vacuum to clean up the mess. There are probably other products but I didn't have any issues with it.
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 4 жыл бұрын
I would probably do an oil or wipe on poly finish, but there are other options. Crystalac makes a water based product that emulates lacquer and works great. I will be using that on an upcoming build.
