It's sometimes a struggle to introduce new players to something that's so alien to them. I'm still trying to explain to my group how there's much more to D&D than just combat, and they can decide for themselves what to do next instead of trying to interpret what I want them to do for the plot to progress. Our last session ended with the team befriending a Nothic and decided they wanted to find him a new and better cave to live in as a side quest, and they literally asked me if that was even something they had the choice to do before deciding they were going to do that! EDIT: WOW! I was not expecting this many people to sympathize with an issue I thought was pretty uncommon.

I think it comes from a natural inclination of board games and games, in general, having hard-set rules. ~ The beauty of DnD is that it's more like a free-form story that meanders off into the distance 156 light-years from where you started and intended to initially go. Even something as mundane as starting off in a small rural village where everyone knows everyone else can be interesting and interactive. For example, your rogue could steal something because they want to and have the entire village turn against you on a manhunt for their precious gems that they'll use to feed their families for the month. This implicates the rest of the group, which if they can't defuse the situation with persuasion leads to self self-defence, which becomes murder, which reinforces the idea that the group are the bad guys to the villagers and it allows for a 'hero' to show up and try to defeat them for the village. All because a rogue decided to steal and the villagers acted how you'd expect people to when someone steals their stuff. Alternatively, the rogue could steal all the jewels, the clothes on all of their collective backs and them be none the wiser that he had stolen them.

This video makes a great point - that we're all humans that usually can relate to each other if we try hard enough. One of my best players and best friends is very frat boyish and loved the narration of epic-scale combat when he started, and is just now choosing to learn about 'feats' after four months in the campaign. There's always something to talk about now.

So far I've made: A fat gnome wizard who refused to get off his dog and would keep talking about old stories with no point. A noble warrior, which managed to convince the group to make a giant combo attack so it seemed like there was a giant dragon attacking, combining basically everyone's spells and skills And my current, a vengeful paladin who is trying to spread his own niche communist knock-off religion and literally hands out pamphlets, preach and talks about the "New Dawn" in which the sinners shall be burnt and the devoted shall live in an utopia. Oh and through a conversation with a demon it has been hinted that the god he serves may not actually be a god, but something else.

My experience tells me (and I had a decent share of negative, but useful rp experience), that bunch of players playing completely different styles of rpg together are not that easy to pull off, unless they share at least one strong overlapping interest. Otherwise, it is a group of people, that plays different games at the same table and has nothing, literally nothing to talk to each other outside the game unless it is absolutely required to their interaction within the gamez as characters. A lot of gaming group eventually fell apart, because players had no actual interest in each other, outside of immediate game situation and scheduling. It very much narrows down what you can play in this group, because every move outside of anyone's comfort zone will be considered as a threat and immediate turn off. Such crowds can work, but not for long. So, my utmost advice - talk to the people you play with, learn what they like, help them to learn what they like, learn what YOU like and look for ways to integrate it into your games and characters. And if not - be strong enough to say 'no' and move on. D&D and other table top games (CCG, wargames, RPGs, etc.) are the best, when you have _together,_ not in spite of each other.

Man, I tried D&D. I really wanted to enjoy it as well. But I guess I could really only like it if I have a really good DM. My friend used my other friends and I as basically test dummies for him to practice DMing. What I learned is that he really doesn't like deviating from the story... and that he also doesn't like to set up for the campaign until the night before. Like, you would expect a DM to at least know the general settings, maybe have some notes on specifics, but instead he straight up read from the book every 20 - 30 seconds. I wish I had a smoother story experience, maybe then I'd enjoy D&D.

The worst thing about D&D is when someone gets discouraged from playing simply because of a bad DM or bad player environment. I hope this doesn't discourage you from ever playing it again. Perhaps a different player group is exactly what you need. In which case, there's multiple different online platforms to connect to other players with. Try some stuff out.

And that's another great thing about D&D. You don't have to play just one version. I personally like 5e because it's way easier to learn and I find it to be better for role play, as the other versions like 3.5e makes having certain stats practically a necessity when playing (depends on the class, but my point is that it's such a stat oriented game that not a lot of variety can really happen). But if you're someone who really likes customizing every thing possible with your character, then something like 3.5e is perfect for you (especially pathfinder).

See, I feel like I have the opposite problem. I really REALLY want to get into DnD! But, no matter how many "great DM's" I meet and "super fun storylines" I'm told about, I always get hopelessly bored in sessions. I personally hate combat in DnD because I'm still not familiar enough with it to really flex my creative muscles (I'm too scared that I'm casting the wrong spell or misreading something) so it's normally just long, drawn-out battles where I'm like "I wonder if I should use my crossbow or spend my turn trying to get a few feet closer to it so maybe I can stab it." I really like playing intense, flawed characters that go through a character arc through the campaign but I find my character choices only serve to annoy my party members and have them project my character's flaws onto me. Like, once I was playing a really dumb Lawful Good character who wanted to save someone in a tower even after a party member had a vision warning us not to go in. There was no way my character would have just left him to die, but my party members actually broke character to tell me to fuck off and just go down the path. It's those little things that make me really frustrated whenever I play and have left me not wanting to return. If I could find a really good DM, like a personal friend who knew me and knew to just let me do my thing and wouldn't get mad if I didn't do the spell right, then I think I could flourish. But, none of my friends play DnD so I'm just kinda stuck in "wanting to play DnD but not actually having fun when I play" limbo.

Thanks for introducing me to the "eight-or-so engagements", they're actually really helpful in understanding why I like certain games and not others. I feel like I have a strong affinity for Discovery and Narrative, and a strong aversion to Fellowship (which is why I don't think I can get into D&D). Your additions to the standard MDA formula are pretty good. "Abnegation" is certainly a better word than "Submission", for it implies that what's driving you is some pent-up energy that you just need to purge (as opposed to wanting to "submit", whatever that means). And I'm glad you differentiate between Challenge and Competition - I feel like this distinction is why Pokemon frustrates me so much. On the one hand the combat system is so intricate that I really want to get invested and learn, but on the other hand it's just so Competition-oriented (which is like 90% copying what other people are doing) that I end up getting discouraged. I feel like the ideal game for me is something like Octopath Traveler, a single-player experience with enough Discovery, Narrative, and Expression woven in to keep it interesting. That's a game that actually balances Abnegation and Challenge very well - you can fight trash mobs until you're blue in the face; but since the difficulty of boss fights scales with your level, grinding alone doesn't make the game any easier.

My sister, on the other hand, is a social butterfly and not really interested in the math-heavy aspect of tabletop games. However, including her in a game session really showed her that you can be creative and wacky within the rules of the game, and now she's playing as a centaur named Cibum Sphera (Latin for meat ball). D&D has something for just about everyone; sometimes, the core wackiness of the game is what's going to draw people in. I'm literally playing as a cleric that's based on Kermit the Frog, and it's AWESOME.

Some characters I’ve played over 4 years. Pancake Pattycake LeRoy Jackson the 4th, an ogre wizard who punches people with magic fists. Glorius Maximus, the egomaniac human peasant with no class features who was somehow the most useful party member and went on to become king. Brother Joseph (Broseph), paladin of the bro code who managed to save 3 or more lives every combat he got in. And those are just the funny ones.

You probably know about it, but Harmonquest with dan harmon is one of my favorite things on the internet, it also got me into D&D. But it's worth a watch! The entire first and second seasons are free on VRV, like 12 hour long episodes a season at that so uhhhh yea. That's my comment...............................*hides in blanket fort*

@@herrkrabbe148 tl;dr: The term makes no sense in any capacity and rustles my jimmies when someone utters it unironically. ts;gb: I'm a medieval enthusiast, and an absolute slut for a finely constructed harness of plate armour. But as I try out certain fantasy productions and interact with the fandom, I often come across the term - when discussing such suits of plates - plate _mail._ Which doesn't make much sense, as I understand mail to be a word describing an interlinked series of rings while plate is... well, plate. And while there certainly does exist armour consisting of plates connected & supplemented by chains, what is depicted isn't that, while DnD suckers are adamant that that is what such a system is called. As it turns out, this misinformation happens to stem from Dungeons & Dragons and, among other things it's guilty for, really rustles my jimmies.

@BlueSun_
@BlueSun_ 5 жыл бұрын
@@minecraft9820 Ok, so here's my comprehensive how-to guide to find a group online. You won't need to do all or even most of these steps, but the more you do the faster you'll find a group and the better that group will be. Make an account on Discord, this is how people usually talk Make an account on roll20 and play the tutorial, this is how people usually play the game Search for games in Roll20. Apply to ALL of the ones that fit your schedule and interests. (This is just like finding a job, make as many applications as you can, and make them fit the offer) Go to the LFG sub-Reddit. Look for the most recent posts made by DMs looking for players. Apply to all that fit your schedule and interests. Keep refreshing that sub-Reddit, and keep applying. Tips to have your applications accepted: Read the offers closely and make sure you cater to what the DM is looking for Read the other applications, expecially the ones that were accepted If they ask you to make a character, make sure it fits the campaign setting and avoid choosing a class that a lot of other applicants are using too. If multiple people accept your applications, choose the campaign that looks the most interesting and be courteous to the other DMs you decline

@@minecraft9820 Besides playing online, you can also look up your local tabletop gaming store. If they sell D&D they're also likely to organise meet-ups or know of local groups that do. You can also use any app or sites for generic meet-ups, and look for d&d in your area.

D&D or any tabletop rpg for that matter is something I always craved to try. Unfortunatly I've had difficulty getting any of my friends interested. I am now getting at the part of my life were we are getting less and less free time as well. I finally met people who could be interested, but I have to find out how to mobilise them. I might redouble my efforts though, D&D seems like the ultimate experience I'm looking for.

I played D&D for a really long time (I started playing at 14, and didn't stop till 27 when my studies became too heavy to stay up all night on fridays) and I have been playing minecraft for almost the same time (I stated playing at the "combat tests" update, before the official release and I'm ocassionally, still playing it). I think I'm not allinged nither with Competitive engagement(I've tried LoL, and I don't like it) or Fellowship (dispite D&D, my main engagement there was Expression). I'm also inclined to Narrative, I think, since i like japanese role-playing videogames like FF9. And finally, from the Sensation engagement I get the music of gemes and anime.
