This video in a nutshell: Historia was actually what we thought Ymir was and Ymir is actually what we believed Historia to be. Historia was playing the humble girl but inside she just wanted to do what *she* wanted to do. Ymir was pretending to be selfish because she didn't want to admit she was selfless. *BASICALLY* They struggled to figure out who they really were inside and when they found out, they became that person.

Plus regardless of whether or not you still enjoy something with spoilers, the things that are happening right now in the manga are different. It's purely about the story. Seeing them animated or on a page won't change how hype they are, but getting spoiled will.

I can't emphasize how much I appreciate someone finally doing an analysis video on Ymir and Historia. I think there the best written female characters in the series and I think Historia's arc (in the manga) is the best one in the entire story. I also love how Ymir and Historia directly contrast each other in terms of their outward selves and they're true personality. Ymir acted selfish and bitchy and acted like she didn't care about anyone but herself. Yet her biggest flaw was that in reality she was far too selfless. In her first life she sacrifices herself for her followers to try and save them. Then in her second life after she's "reborn" in a sense, she dedicates herself to Historia and ultimately sacrifices herself a second time for Reiner and Bertholdt. She desperately wanted to live for herself and be selfish even though she couldn't even live up to her own ideology due to just how much of a naturally selfless person she was. Historia on the other hand pretended to be the perfect selfless Christa who cared for everyone and would gladly die for them. That's how she wanted to die by committing suicide on the snowy mountain with Daz making it look like she was trying to save him so that she'd be remembered as this perfect selfless girl, like the girl Freida had told her to be like from the books she read as a kid. Meanwhile Historia on the inside however was extremely selfish, not caring about anyone besides Ymir. Not even caring for Armin's safety when he went on a dangerous mission disguised as her. Her trying to commit suicide by taking Daz to the grave with her in of itself was extremely selfish, being fine letting him die with her just to cement her perfect post death image that she wanted. Both of their character arcs are great and play off each other perfectly! And I'd strongly recommend anyone who's a fan of Historia to read chapters 51-72 in the manga to truly appreciate her character in its entirety. Scenes like her breakdown on the wall after Ymir left her, her talk with Eren about her true self, Levi forcing her to become queen, her talk with Dimo Reeves, her meeting Kenny. And all the stuff that was cut out of the cave chapters like Kenny explaining to her why she was born and how much of a piece of shit her father is whilst shoving a knife down Rod's throat lol. Chapter 66 in the manga is one of my favorite chapters in the entire series with the way it switches back and forth between Historia's flashbacks of Ymir and her current predicament all building up to her rejecting her father and the power of "God", saying fuck humanity, even if eating Eren would've been the best and safest choice for humanity and for the first time deciding to truly live for herself. Her liberation scene is one of the most powerful scenes in the entire manga and her then standing up to Levi on the wall and using his own words against him to go against his orders since he told her to fight is great. Plus like you mentioned her punching Levi is WAY more impactful in the manga! And it was frustrating seeing anime onlies reacting to that scene, and being confused by it and why she did that and just not realizing the significance of it.

@@sparklesmart5891 I didn't see the anime, but in the manga, she does it because Levi has been lifting her up on her collar when she had a weak moment and yelled at her to become queen and not be such a pansy. It was quite intimidating and harsh. That's why Mr. Reeves tells her to give him a punch in reverse once she becomes queen. After all that happened next (and Mr. Reeves dying in the process), blowing that punch at Levi shows how she's overcome her past struggles and how people who thought of her as a weakling have been wrong all along.

The uprising arc also made me appreciate Levi a lot more. He is the hero of humanity who would do any wrong deed and even turn humanity against itself if it meant avoiding extinction. He really parallels Eren later.

The message of their character arcs is "be yourself". They come full circle when they start doing precisely what they want, regardless of other people wanting that or not, whilst abandonig their facades. They become fully independent women and not slaves of other people's expectations and opinions. It doesn't matter whether you're selfless or selfish, just live for yourself, be free. They're the best written female characters in manga I had the pleasure to know, and their message is still extremely relevant to the series today.

It's funny how Historia went from just another side character in S1 to the most developed character in S2 and S3. AoT has a ton of epic and memorable moments but that scene with her father and Eren is my favourite. Its so powerful seeing the girl who once let others decide all her choices finally stand up for herself by literally shoulder throwing her manipulator and freeing Eren despite knowing the consequences (bonus points for telling him to shut up and stop crying like a baby). Ironic that the scene where calls herself the worse girl who ever lived actually cemented her status as the best girl in the series.

There is just so much fucking wrong with this.... if there was another more ethical but just a bit riskier alternative to her eating Erin I cheer her "egoistic/self-preserving altruism", but jeopardizing other's people's wellbeing or considerations and desires for an unequal and severely inferior calculus advantaging herself and calling that "an absolute win" like you imagine it to be; _and_ glorifying the brutalization of an emotionally broken down victim of his own mistakes, pathetic, pitiful and pitiable... When Eren wanted to jeopardize Levi's plan to try to fight Annie in the forest, people thought his own free will was sooooooo annoying and 'immature" and that "he had a right to punch him with pain earlier in that court scene", but when it's Historia suddenly it's okay; yeah, perfect logic... You go, girl ! That's a character to praise and sell plushies of (oh god, the idea of her influencing people with that mindset...) (yes, when you're "born" selfish, it's okay, don't change that about yourself - well, unless you're Eren, of course... -) I'm sick of this series : I've been at it full-in for about a whole week, recently binge-watched all the anime, caught up on the remaining ~20 chapters, watched similar analysis videos ('haven't even watched this one yet); I'm gonna take a break, and hopefully I can one day get a satisfying answer (not smth that "bends to my sensitivities", as you'd obviously want to put it to mock me, of course; but that smith that I could wrap my head around and come at peace with); I'm just drained, I haven't slept well from this much dedication during the week...

@@nicholasleclerc1583 in the forest scene with Eren people thought he was immature because of the perfect representation of Erwin and Levi at that point; remember before the forest they never failed onscreen once so people saw Eren as an immature brat who is whining against people who know better. But for Historia its different, viewers learn about the life she was living essentially as a guilt filled do gooder. And the scouts especially Erwin is shown as not so perfect beings. So when she goes against the scouts and such it is a "yes you go girl" syndrome. Moreover the forest scene suffers from pacing in season 1 as viewers don't even have the time to understand that if Eren fought the female titan there Levi squad wouldn't be dead.

damn. this is definitely one of the best aot vids ive seen. i mean, most suck, but this was a really good analysis. the one thing i want to add onto tho: living with pride (in the way that Ymir wants to) doesn't just mean doing what you want-- it means owning who you are. i think that is possibly the most important part of Historia and Ymir as characters; they're people who are devalued and invalidated by the world and as such need to find a way to hold onto their idenities, to own them. so, when Ymir saved Reiner and Bert, it wasn't just because she could-- though that is a big part of it. it was because she was the *only* one who could, and because fulfilling that role made her feel proud to be herself. to be the one person in the world who could give Reiner and Bert that relief, when no one else saw them as humans, just as she was seen as either less than or more than a human. dehumanization (which goes both ways-- with hatred and with glorification) is one of the biggest themes in AoT so that's why i stick with this analysis. and in general, i wish more people saw the deep commentary AoT has on this theme. it's less about the ideologies the characters hold and more about how they survive and stay sane in an inherently unjust world where no one can think up a better solution than just killing eachother... or everything. when everyone is being made into monsters, how do you stay human? that is the question Historia and Ymir's characters are meant to answer. ... of course (MANGA SPOILERS; SERIOUSLY DONT READ PAST THIS IF YOU HAVENT FINISHED THE MANGA) Hisu's character arc didn't really get followed through all the way, but there was a hint of the type of person she was at the end, when she saves Jean and Connie's mom, and also with the way she refuses to continue the titan inheritance cycle. the main problem is that we didn't get to see her internal conflict developed on (rumbling vs inheritance), which is a shame because in the face of those two terrible options, Historia would definitely be the type to choose neither. not to mention that i imagine she's only reason the island isn't a smoldering hellhole. i mean, the jaegerists killed every single top government official, had mass executions and beatings in the street, and were literally chopping up bodies beneath the rubble of the walls and throwing them into wheelbarrows to clean up instead of, yknow,,,, trying to help them, like the MPs were? so i HAVE to imagine that Historia somehow mitigated the damage. and yes, i did just write out a massive wall of text as a comment for a 2 year old youtube video. what of it? fight me. i have opinions.

As much as I love Studio Wit's adaptation of AoT, the way they handled Hitoria in season 3 left me very disappointed. They skipped over so much of the build up that the climaxes of her arc (both in the cave and later at the walls) feel a lot less satisfying.

Kirill Shakhnovskiy not just historia either. they fucked up her arc the most, but other major arcs like levi and kenny were messed up. then there’s minor characters such as rod and frieda who really left an impression originally but were shafted in the anime. hell, even the two journalists i cared about in the manga. eren and erwin are probably the only characters done well

Every person with Fritz blood (including Zeke and Historia) have opted for stagnation and inactivity, with the indirect end goal being the end of the Eldian race. Historia may have seen Eren as her mirror image in the caves, but guess what; he was bawling his eyes out through a combination of not understanding the memories he was seeing and the pact the Fritz' made with the founding titan.

@@jackraiden6180 isayama literally stated that hisu is one of his favorite characters, along with his writings of her- giving her an arc, which can’t be said about a majority of chars. she has one of the best char developments, made sacrifices, and established a special bond (/wsimilarities) with eren. she’s not acknowledged often so by definition she literally is underrated. it’s fair that you dont dig her tho.

I personally think Jean is such an interesting character and I have been trying really hard to really like Historia but I just can't. That's why I was watching this video, I want to know why people think she is interesting, why people like her, why people say she is a deep character because I still don't see it. Ymir on the other hand was easy to grasp. At first I didn't get her but after reading the story again I understood her character and came to like her. I guess I have to keep searching XD

One of the main themes of the manga is about how properly integrating your dark side is not only good for you but for the people you care about as a whole. Your Shadow, whilst filled with negative energy, can end up hiding the strength that you didn't know you had. Ymir was the "Devilish" influence on Historia who urged her to drop her fake act, drop her fake name and live for herself. In so doing Historia stops calling herself Christa and starts being honest about how she truly feels. This new found "freedom" is what ultimately drives her to be a good person. Similarly Eren served the same role to Mikasa when she was being enslaved. He brutally killed two slavers in front of her and by urging her to fight, to unleash her killer instincts it unlocks a hidden potential that proves pivotal to the plot. Mikasa's Ackermann blood has allowed her to help save the day more than once and aid other people in the process. Not to mention ensure her "freedom" against those who'd try to take it. Now with this in mind, look again at the image of The "Earth Devil" and The Founder "Ymir". What could be the deal they were making? Interesting tidbit, Historia got the name "Christa" from a book Frieda used to read to her. Look at the figure Frieda points to, it's The Founder Ymir but why does she refer to the founder as Christa? I've a feeling that Isayama's been foreshadowing his ending for a good long while now.

Holy shit. Holy. Shit. As soon as I saw you uploaded I dropped everything to watch it. I was not disappointed. The whole video was amazing, but especially that last line - my god. Stunning. Left me speechless. And you could've easily made it sound cringe - that type of writing can either be really powerful or laughably awkward depending on the delivery - but you fucking NAILED IT. Music choice was on point to, big props to the editor. That was just one part of the video, though, and the whole thing was that quality. I haven't even watched AoT and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Magnificent work, keep it up man.

Uprising arc was absolutely brilliant. I had so much fun reading it. At first i was upset they changed it for the anime, but it's what Isayama wanted so oh well. I thought that the 1st half for Zero Eclipse was Ymir talking about Historia, and the 2nd half being Historia talking about Eren ("so if there's no desire to come back out alive, you're a hero?": Eren wanted to die/sacrifice himself for the good of humamity, because he thought Historia is the one who would save the world from titans, not him)
