This is the most helpful advice on the sacrament that I have heard. As a recent convert, confession is something that has taken me a long time to figure out. No one in RCIA could (or would) go into details like this, so it was left “as an exercise for the reader” to figure it out through experience. I’ve been to confession a lot, and it has become less frustrating to make the most of the sacrament, but with advice from this video, I think my experience will be even more fulfilling. Thank you, Father!

I’m a convert too, and yes no mention of confession either that I recall. RCIA was essentially useless in my opinion because it didn’t teach me anything I did not already know. We need to bring back when the pastor of a parish would catechize the Catechumens. I try to go weekly, but it’s hard whenever your parish only offers it for 45 minutes on the middle of a SATURDAY. I hope that priests will start realizing the importance of the sacraments again and devoting their lives to offering them more prevalent so that people don’t have to be strained of grace.

@@travislariscy4466 my RCIA experience was great. I learned a lot. It’s just that confession is something often difficult for laity (perhaps even clergy) to discuss. People try to talk in the abstract so as not to venture into details and examples that are awkward and embarrassing.

Sorry to hear about your RCIA experiences. As a fellow poorly catechized Catholic, I'd recommend the Cathechism Explained by Fr. Spirago, the Catechism of the Council of Trent, and/or the Baltimore Catechism to shore up your understanding of the faith. Worthwhile endeavor. Another great resource is the Sensus Fidelium channel here on YT, especially the sermons by Fr. Ripperger. Google his name + moral virtues for a full list of the virtues we are to strive for. And his name + examination of conscience, if you need one to prep for future Confessions. God bless

I went and gave a general confession about a year ago, named the awful things I’ve done. It really helped me to stop the sins I was describing, I still have tremendous guilt and have become pretty scrupulous. Confession was a great thing for me but I still have resentment towards it, I just feel like a pile of trash when I go. Please pray for me and for others to return to confession and repent.

I wish I watched this yesterday. I went to confession yesterday for the first time in over 15 years even though I returned to the Catholic mass 5 years ago. Then disrupted by covid and a change in where and amount of work, I didn't get deep into the faith until the beginning of this year. Still I didn't even think about it that much. But I felt a deep depression lately and knew I needed it. It was such a great experience. I'm just so happy to be indulged in the Catholic faith again

This is the clearest instruction on this sacrament I’ve ever received! I’m 65 years old have gone to catechism when I was a child, left the church right after my Confirmation and returned at 23. Since returning I’ve never gotten any instruction like this and I believe this is one of the most important thing we could offer our people! Many of us AGONIZE the preparation for this Sacrament and even at time leave the confessional unsure that we are better off then when we went in. Thank you Fr. Gregory God has truly called you to rejuvenate our Church. Thank you 🙏🏻♥️

I don't mean to sound pious, but I am an elderly woman who lives by myself, and I work from home. I am a chaste single woman, and I refrain from any impure thoughts or actions. I am fine when I don't have the "opportunity" to sin. It's a good thing I am not out and about in the workplace because I am a reactive person, and, from past experience, I know I would be impatient and curt and whiny with people. But now that I am pretty much insulated from interaction with people, and I have learned to have patience with them in my current role, I don't really have any grave sins. I've confessed to participating in gossip when I hear from a coworker, or feeling frustrated with the company's ever-changing policies, but, beyond that, I don't always know what to bring to Confession, although I do go once a month. This video was very helpful to me because I can now consider the virtues and gifts of the Holy Spirit, which I had rarely examined as a source for making a good confession.

My 1962 missal has fantastic morning and evening prayer and what you say is 100% how it’s been for me. I simply cannot keep committing the same sins when I am to face them at the end of every day, and resolving to not do them the next day in the morning. Edit: well not simply, I still do sin terribly but I at least have to work on them when I do this prayer routine.

Father Gregory, going to Confession is a very serious matter. We should have sorrow for our sins with the thought of trying never to offend God again. You make confession sound like we are making a laundry list and being sorry doesn’t really matter. Confession is a Sacrament and the graces we receive has all to do with the love, trust , and respect we have for our Lord and His Holy Catholic Church. I am a convert since July 3rd 1959, love the Catholic Church and follow the Traditional teachings of our Faith. It seems to me, we have fallen away from our Catholic Teachings and have lost our way to guide others to the truth. May our Lord keep you faithful to His Teachings and grant you the wisdom to lead all those in your path to His Salvation.

I can't say enough about the grace I have received from a brief nightly examination of conscience and regular confession (every two weeks). It's truly amazing. I do the regular longer examination once before I confess. Each night, I simply run through the day and see if I can apply the phrase "Jesus and I did ____." If Jesus wasn't present, that's something to take note of. For example, I hit the snooze button and didn't have time to read the Daily Readings. Jesus and I ate breakfast." "I neglected to say Grace before. Jesus and I stayed patient with my friend. I ate a lot of junk food instead of lunch."

A helpful video for me may be: how to know when to speak up? When is it appropriate to speak on our faith when we live in a family that doesn’t like hearing anything God-related, let alone being the only Catholic. I don’t want to push my faith on them- they know what I believe, so I hesitate to bring up religion/faith in fear they think I’m judging or forcing it on them. Best I can put into words, the feeling goes deeper.

Dear Father, could you do a video breaking down the Commandments, and the seven deadly sins. I have found that I don’t fully understand each one. Example, the first commandment, commands faith, hope, love and worship of God. But forbids, idolatry, superstition, spiritism, tempting God, sacrilege, and attendance at false worship. I took this off the internet. It would be helpful to understand each commandment, to do a full examination of conscience. Thank you. 🙏🙏🙏

1) Obviously, if you've committed a mortal sin, you need to go to confession as soon as possible. Don't wait for a month or anything like that. Because who knows when the Lord will call us. 2) Also, while any genuinely forgotten mortal sin is forgiven, you need to confess it at the next visit. 3) As the CCC stipulates, absolution of sins that require restitution means that there must be an intention to do so (WHEN POSSIBLE) for the absolution to be valid.

@phoult37
@phoult37 2 жыл бұрын
Here's a good general rule: if the work or shopping can be done on a different day than Sunday, then don't do it. Some chores can be done on Saturday, while others such as doing dishes or sweeping the kitchen have to be done after a meal, so Sunday would be appropriate for them. It's really a mindset issue; Saturday is a domestic work day, Sunday is not.
@MaddieSchnitzel
@MaddieSchnitzel 2 жыл бұрын
All Pat said is true. And I would add: Sunday is the Lord's day. You have all week to yourself and your family and to do the "worldly work". So, that one day of the week should be given all to God. You focus on Him, you pray, you read the Bible, read religious books or watch something on youtube, just do something that will help you grow spiritually and bring you closer to God. It’s not a day for entertainment and wordly indulgence so we shouldn't go to the movies, to parties, to the mall etc. We should go to church and then go home and spend the day fully in God. For Him, not for us. Of course if you forget buying something on saturday but you really need it on sunday, nothing will happen if you pop to the store to get it. We dont need to get paranoid. But it's better to organize your week in such a fashion so that you can devote sunday fully to God.

Thank you for clearing up contrition. There was an instance where I went to Confession and told the priest that I didn't feel like I was sorry or remorseful and asked if I should proceed with the Confession. He was puzzled because my presence in the confessional alone disproved that and he told me the devil was putting those thoughts in my head. I wanted to receive the Eucharist which I knew I couldn't do that without Confession. So I guess it was "imperfect contrition" as you say. He didn't tell me to leave (nor did I expect him to) and I confessed my sins and was absolved. To hear you say that the Sacrament itself brings about contrition is very helpful to hear. Thank you Father.

I realize the term is used now, but ‘in the old days’ we never said ‘Sacrament of Confession’, but only ‘Sacrament of Penance’. One ‘went to Confession’. (I remember when ‘dread the loss of Heaven and pains of Hell’ was changed to ‘just punishments’. Nothing seriously objectionable, of course, but the start of not wanting people to be faced with unpleasant realities that are part of the Faith.

I found this video to be very helpful. Actually, during Lent I went to confession every week. And the priest did tell me to quit thinking about the past and to begin thinking about the resurrection of our Lord. I had been reading Saint Faustina's diary and I just wanted to be as diligent as she was. It's a long story but I believe the Lord has led me to a period of my life where I am not sinning anymore. I think I can say that honestly. Your examples of what really isn't a sin was really helpful. God Bless

What you bring to the sacrament: 1.Contrition/penitence (a virtue associated with justice). It’s something we owe. It’s a moderate sorrow/ hatred for past sins. Desire to make amends and cease committing them. Desire to convert further Imperfect contrition: you hate the consequences of sins. More concerned of the effects of the consequences. The things you lose out on Perfect contrition: you hate the sins because you realize the way it has wounded others (chaste fear: fear of wounding someone you love(God)) Note: You don’t need to have perfect contrition to approach confession. Perfect contrition is the fruit of charity. When you go to confession your contrition is perfected in the process (Attrition-> contrition) you don’t have to Holy and completely and perfectly contrite to go to confession->Rely on the sacrament to bring that it in you But if you feel no contrition: if you have sin and no desire to overcome sin it is invalid. *We must have a desire to heal, overcome, grow 2. Confession: you can over do it or under do it. Recommend: shoot for once a month (it’s a recurring thing to a human scale of remembrance and habit) -You are responsible to confess ALL grave sins that you have committed since your last confession If you forget and later remember the confession is still valid because you didn’t hide that sin on purpose. You can also confess venial sins- if they’re not addressed they can grow into mortal sins When preparing for confession it’s good to make a examination of conscience ( go through commandments, 7 deadly sins, virtues, and vices) invoke the Holy Spirit *Sacrament of confession is a source of grace NOT a reset button Entering confession: you do the sign of the cross. You say: Forgive me Father for I have sinned it has been ___ since my last confession. Slot in your state of life (I’m single, married, etc) Confess all conscious sins with kind and number. Don’t globalize yourself/accuse yourself of all sins. It doesn’t have to be long/ psychologically detailed. You don’t have to confess temptations. You don’t have to give a narrative of your sins or try to pin your sins on others. Take responsibility. Be honest and authentic. Try not to make the same confession all the time from despair-> Reevaluate. Helpful to have a regular priest you confess to Confession is NOT a pastoral counsel, visit to a psychologist, spiritual direction 3.Satisfaction: priest gives some kind of counsel. Then penance. Penance: is a temporal punishment so that you atone for the sin to complete the process of your healing and growth. If you have a penance that doesn’t have an end date or you can’t fulfill, you can ask in the sacrament of confession for another penance. Memorize the act of contrition. Humble yourself and submit to ritual forms (the ritual the church has discerned over the history of years) Like the following: My God I am heartily sorry for having offended thee and I detest all my sins because of thy just punishment but most of all because they have offended Thee, my God, Who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen Then the priest gives the absolution (if the priest doesn’t use the proper words you can ask him to give the proper absolution) **REMEMBER: The sacrament of confession is instituted for your healing and growing**

A beautiful exposition of the power of the sacrament of Confession. If we want to grow in love of God and neighbor, we have to be honest with ourselves and God in terms of how we wound that love. For those who take this sacrament seriously, the growth in loving intimacy with God and neighbor is unending. I had to laugh...I say the same act of contrition and also sometimes forget that last sentence. Cheers and keep up the great work!

For me as soon as I have committed a mortal sin, I’ll jot it down and go for confession with my list of sins since my last confession before I take holy communion. I usually don’t wait for a month because I do not want to skip holy communion.

Father Pine, I have questions about having cell phones in the confessional. I believe it is compromising the seal of confession as so much of the technology has recording capacity. I don’t bring my cell phone into the confessional, I wonder if even the confessor should be bringing a cellphone into the sacrament. Father Pine , I loved the teaching . Thank You!

True story, I once had a priest answer his cell phone 2 times during my confession. I seriously looked around for a candid camera. I just laughed and when he apologized, I just forgave him. What else could I say or do? So weird. I don't bring my cellphone in anymore! I don't think priests should either. Bring a Bible in if your congregation has the evil one preventing them from coming.

Thats a good point. Cell phones should not be brought into the confessional by either party for a number of reasons I would think.

@Kate Moore I don’t think it’s odd it is the world we are living in now. Priests are no different then us when in comes to the need for having a cell phone. Before cell phones people like doctors and nurses, firemen, etc. used beepers. I just think it is a subject that needs to be addressed.

@Kate Moore Yes, I think it is overlooked by many people because there is not only a lack of reverence for the Eucharist but all the sacraments. I find texting incredibly hard to communicate, forgive my misunderstanding.

Thank you Father. I started going back to confession on the Immaculate Conception and went again the first Friday. The Monsignor priest recommended I start going monthly and that is what I intend to do. Before the recent confessions, it was a couple years since my last confession. The recent confessions have helped me but I also seem to feel the devil attacking me harder,or maybe it’s just my flesh. The fight is a blessing though.thank you for the detailed instructions on what a confession should include and how to describe sins and what you don’t need to say. 🙏🙏🙏

Thanks Fr Pine and Pints with Aquinas for this excellent video (as always). When I came back to Church after 8 years being apart from it, I remember having some confessions where I got corrected by the priests who told me exactly what Fr Pine is telling us there. These guidances help me a lot. God bless you !

Thank you Father. This is a very hood video. I especially like the the suggestion to go over the gifts and virtues of the Holy Spirit. I have to go face to face because I read lips. Pride keeps me away more than anything else. And as I age it is getting harder and harder to understand what the priest is saying. I fear the day I can’t understand anything and I will no longer be able to receive absolution. Please pray for me and others like me, who cannot understand what is being said to them.
