For me what hurts my lower back sometimes was the tucking or arching or my lower back or butt I did when my feet come all the way up near my hands.

When I'm aiming for a big number of burpees - e,.g. 100...I find it psychologically easier to break them down mentally into a 2-4-6-8 (20) x 5 sequence...I;m still doing 100, but the thought of a 100 is demoralising - whereas aiming to do 2 then 4 then 6 then 8 followed by short break then repeat 4x seems more manageable!

Can you do your burpees on the side of the bar instead of in front of the bar in competition? I would think it would be easier and faster to jump over the bar if it was the side instead of facing the bar.

Depends on the competition. It's generally specified if it's "bar facing" burpees or not.
