I dislike my wording for the 5 minute a stage section of this video. Based on my experience with the game, the 5 minute a stage rule hasn't worked very well for me, and from what i've seen/heard from new players, i'm not the only one. It was incorrect for me to say "it's bad advice to give to new players", I know it works for some people, and it's a hypocritical for me to make a statement like that. Most of the guides i've seen on this website refer to rushing as the best strategy, and I've hardly seen anyone talk about full-looting, it was a very broad statement, and not targeted. My goal for this video was to help new players, but I understand how this video may come off, I will be more careful when it comes to writing my scripts in the future. Thank you for the feedback.

That was the whole original point of the 5 minute "rule", I played that way for a while because it kinda teaches you to path better over time and get a feel for where chests will be more often so you're not constantly checking every empty corner of the map. Literally no one believes that you have to clear every stage in less than 5 minutes and it's sad to see that DO continues to misrepresent the "rule" to this day. The guy is good at the game but god he comes off as such a jackass when he says things like "Advice I don't agree with is harmful to muh community" or "OMG I am ASTONISHED some people think x is good/bad!"

The 5 minute rule is a remnant of the past, the days before the scrapper. Be efficient, depending on character you can full clear most stages no items within less than 8 minutes. But remember as well you don't NEED to full clear. If you miss one single chest on the other side of the map it's probably not worth it to run all the way over there and waste 2 minutes.

I know I'm way late but like. the best runs usually start spending like 8 minutes on stage 1 printing 10 crit glasses. if you don't get a god tier printer then yea go rush the next stage but if you get crit print you stay there till that crit is at 101% no questions asked. especially on siphoned forest, easily the best stage for that.

7:50 Yeah, I agree to use them in moderation. About trascendence, used in moderation also teaches you to get better at dodging and to check your health frequently because... if you don't dodge, you don't heal. The only modifier that removes and doesn't complement is Eclipse 3 (you don't care about falling anymore). In fact although it weakens Eclipse 8, it also makes it so that if you get hit a lot you'll still end up with garbage max health... that you cannot heal. Agree with Tonic and Gesture, but, unless you use the new broken combinations shaped glass used in moderation is not bad at all. If your run is doing extremely well getting shaped glass is just placing a kill button on the back of your head. If your run is going badly, then one stack of shaped glass can give you the damage you need while still making you worry about enemies hitting you back. In fact now you have to worry a lot about dodging. I think using lunars in moderation helps you learn about the game, except for gesture and tonic (1 gesture, 1 tonic, fuel cells is very inexpensive in lunar coins). But overall amazing tips.

To add onto tip 1 and 2 1) Efficient pathing is by first farming at spawn to unlock the nearest chests. Then path to next chest and farm till unlock. Repeat until teleportal. So many, myself included, beelined to teleportal and ignored monsters. Rushing is a strat, but farming chest to chest has always given more reliable wins. 2) Command is a solid way to learn the items and procs. Though after beating monsoon, vanilla is the way to go. Once you know what items are good and bad, scrappers and printers become key components in making a good build. Bonus) Newt altar pathing is also key. Look up a vid while pausing to find all spots. Scrap and bad items can be traded in for OP greens and reds. A regen green scrap altar can gaurantee a god run. Stacking 5+ regen green scrap means free legendaries every newt visit. It’s also a ton of free greens if there’s a green 3d printer on stage.

As someone who began Risk of Rain 2 and watched Woolie as a guide for beginners. The 5 Minute rule worked for me in Monsoon more often than, but I agree that it really isn't best for newcomers as they're forced into stressing out about time rather than getting a feel if their build in the stage is sufficient. In my experience, time is only relevant if you don't know generally what it brings and not being able to know if you can curb it effectively. That's why I like how Disputed Origin actually states that the items are the core of a successful run in terms of outmatching the increasingly difficult enemies that will spawn regardless of whatever time precautions you take. Typically, I would recommend taking more time and focusing less on expecting to win on your first few runs, and more on using it as a warmup, unlocking items and skills, and learning the game the best you can while doing so. I.e. Scout what you can and learn generally what's useful on your character and work to take advantage of that, learn what works best for you and use that to make your runs faster and more efficient.

@choty70662 жыл бұрын
I understand what you meant with not rushing but the 1st boss isn't easyer because of items as you may not get items that help in any way. The reason it's easyer is because of levels. Leveling from lvl 1 to 2 and 3 is a massive power spike eventhough later levels aren't as impactul as items. That's why fighting a boss under 5 mins when the difficulty is still easy and you are lvl 2 or 3 from killing mobs is easyer than just rush

I think 5 minutes per stage works well as a "learn the rule so know how to break it." It's common for new players to run around randomly, looting slowly and inefficiently and wasting time. Saying "try to clear each stage in 5 minutes" will quickly reveal just how slow they really are, and pressure them to loot as efficiently as possible. Once you can reliably get to stage 3 in roughly 9-11 minutes, you know you've got a solid strategy for gathering loot and decent intuition about when you're wasting time. Now you can apply those skills more selectively, varying how much time you spend on a stage based on what's available and what your run looks like. Ultimatley I think that a 5-minute tempo is a great framework for building good habits and intuition, even if it isn't the most perfect strategy for advanced players.

There was 2 tips on purpose and 1 tip on accident. First tip about playing at your own pace is wonderful, with the right build, you don't have to play like a speedrunner, me and buddy just had a 3 hour run where we obliterated everything and just had fun without rushing. 2nd tip is dodging, most people think that with enough hp items theyll be invincible but when you get hit by a black hole, unless you have dio's teddy bear, its over. 3rd tip was about lunar items on accident, explaining how although they look awful on the surface with their descriptions, lunar items can change how the game is played massively adding more fun content and you should definitely use them whenever you want to make some crazy builds. The other 2 aren't even tips, they don't help you improve and they are literally just his opinion and preference on how he enjoys the game. If you want to use artifacts to make the game more enjoyable, use them, and playing on eclipse is only fun if you like the extremely challenging gameplay, however there is not even a hint of tip imbedded in this opinion. If you want an actual tip, as a newer player, learn how to stack items that compound off each other, for example, goat hooves and feathers both give you movement mechanics and with enough of them, you're able to fly around the map and have a blast. Same goes for things like the MK.1 rockets + Ceremonial daggers, both of them track enemies for you, throw in gasoline canister, ukulele, and brilliant behemoth and you literally do not even have to press m1. You can just focus on dodging and let everything else do the work.

I will say I think command is an extremely nice crutch for a new player. Not only can it guarantee god runs, it can also drastically cut down the luck in unlocks. It's one thing to say 'don't use command', when you have all your characters set up exactly as you like, it's another when you're trying to unlock the *good* artificer special instead of, you know, flamethrower. Some unlocks can just be excessively brutal and leave a bad taste in your mouth. Engineer starts with two often-dead abilities and the turrets, what a miserable character. On the run where I unlocked the good abilities, I popped command and made godturrets to carry me through. And this goes for items as well. Did you know I played several dozen runs of this game before realizing there even was a secret to unlock on the aqueduct? Dozens of runs with no bands! And even then, it took me several tries to actually activate it. Moral of the story, I do think you're right that it's necessary to put the artifacts away after a point, but I don't think that point should be as strongly worded as 'don't'.

I dont think any crutch "prevents" growth inherently. I beleive it is intention based. For instance. If you had something to suppliment your healing like and starting the game with a rejuvination racks. It doesnt hurt your capablity to get better provided you understand that dodging is better than facetanking and recovering. It doesnt prevent you from learning until you cannot function without it, not just being more forgiving in punishing you. Following the previous example. If you get a leeching seed with a bungis and face tank a stone golem lazer with your rejuv rack. Thats preventing you from getting better. But if youre still playing proactively and trying to dodge it will simple help you recover from your hits faster.

Basically Command and Sacrifice are as I think a must-have if you want to experiment with loadouts and what items do you aim for as each survivor. Also it allows to get most of the survivors without special effort as you can just facetank Mithrix (or let turret do stuff), and with speedboost that you prob got - you reach the escape pod easily and escape. Ez Captain. Or with the amount of stuff you got - just reach 8th Stage and violently erase your survivor for Mercenary (They also make "Commando: Uncorruptable" achievement way easier for obvious reasons)

I feel like just focusing on honing you're dodging skills is probably the biggest tip that anyone could give, it doesn't matter how tanky you think you are eventually you're going to get one tapped if you loop enough

I have only been playing this game for maybe 20 hours and am still quite bad but this has helped me quite a bit as all the other guides talk about doing things fast and i feel like i have learned more by taking things slow.

I found 5 minutes worked for me when I was a noob to Monsoon because I could succeed when I got good items but as I got better I far prefer the consistency of full looting now. Now I feel the more items I get the less volatile luck can be and the more reliable my first loop is.

Command Swarm Sacrifice honor typically I pair these together...the elites only and swarms together maintain the difficulty for sure.

yo if you do make more videos like this you should put the time stamp for each rip in the description, especially since some of the tips run a little long

i make an exception for a single shaped glass when a run really only wants to give me survivability items. it beats going to command stage and giving yourself 5 crit glasses or, more recently watches which is far more cheaty imo

really old video but i wanted to chime in since i didint see this enywhere else. iwe always translated the 5 minutes rule differently that to me its more about the early stages where money and spawns are slow so using 5 ish minutes is good for early stages but i stop using it the futher i go since you no longer wait for spawns and money is plentiful. its essentially that it keeps time waste in early game farm to a mininum

Command + Sacrifice may not be the typical roguelike experience, but that doesn't mean it's bad. It's a lot of fun to get completely broken and I definitely think it is part of the ror2 core experience.

I used to think that being fast was better than combing through an entire stage for items, because i would keep getting obliterated by a mithrix that was twice my level. Then a friend took me through some test runs, one with no items and full speed and one with as many items as possible before considering progression. …we died on stage one opting for speed, and i asked to continue the item run because it was actually turning out to be really strong. go figure!

Would you recommend getting unlocks on drizzle? It seems like an insane amount of key items are the ones obtained by doing certain challenges, even the loadout options for characters. I've played insanely well and became a broken character, to then get one shot by an elite wisp I didn't notice had spawned behind me. It gets a bit frustrating to even want to get better at the game when bs like that happens more often than not.
@jeff32212 жыл бұрын
Items don't improve your situational awareness. Just don't get hit bozo 😂😂😂. Okay I'm playing, drizzle is great for unlocks and learning the game. I played on drizzle for ages then rainstorm, monsoon and finally eclipse. Certain characters have unlocks that are just better than their standard load out. The commando's secondary is a good example
@GenericUser8602 жыл бұрын
Definitely get unlocks on Drizzle. Literally no point in slogging through higher difficulties if the sole goal of your run is to unlock an item or alt ability.
@thewisewolf7682 жыл бұрын
There's nothing wrong with unlocking stuff on drizzle. With that being said, if you get hit it's almost always your fault. As stated in the video, there's people who play against monsters who move and shoot twice as fast, and almost never get hit.

a tip, if you are going to play in some mode q is quite difficult, I recommend picking up items that make q you give a chain effect, if you kill one, kills all, example of these items: ukulele, gasoline and fatuous fire. But of course you n can forget to pick up items for you even

Yeah I kept losing runs when I kept the 5 minute rule. But then just for kicks I decided to just spend way longer on stages and I beat the game first try.
@RocketTurret11 ай бұрын
I guess a better way to word the "5 minute rule" is more "be efficient with time". I'm a newer player. I tried to stick to the 5 minute rule as a hard guideline and all it really did was leave me unprepared for later stages. Now that I treat it more like a suggestion and I take my time scrounging out tons of items, I'm performing way better

I havent watched this but i got 5 of em right here. 1. gasoline 2. willow the wisp 3. Ukulele 4. Kjaro's Band & Runald's Band 5. Ceremonial Dagger Wave clear for days with these 5 simple items.

The choice between Safer Space and Thougher Time relies under the stack size. I would much rather have 15 thougher times than 15 safer spaces, but I would much rather have 3 safer space than 3 thougher time. For example, in late game, you generally die from multiple consecutive hits which a stack of thougher times can prevent but not a stack of safer spaces as it has a cooldown.

Also great vid. I have been putting down ror2 alot because I never seem to get far. It's learning time!
@UPTsans1020Ай бұрын
4:05 that’s the premise of the “true god run”: Artifact blast shower, as many gesture of the drowned’s and fuel cells as you can find, and the safer spaces. The only way to fail the run is not having enough fuel cells or gestures, or if your game crashes from how f-ing much will be on screen at a time.
@UPTsans1020Ай бұрын
And for the love of God, please don’t collect bottled chaos with this build! If you’re up like 50 fuel cells and 10 gestures, this will make your game crash within the next 10 minutes!
