I went switch fer a year. I passed Level I AASI switch. I brush my teeth left-handed now. I play drums both ways completely. It's not magic, you have to devote yourself to giving your switch-riding every opportunity your native side has enjoyed. After a while I got occasionally mixed up as to which was native & which switch. I got better carving on my switch side & front 1's were of course easier switch. Most importantly, I found that each brain hemisphere had it's own style... so it wasn't just matching switch to regular, it was giving regular a new companion & switch the freedom to express itself. For instance I ride more surfy regular, but I can handle crazier carves goofy. I layback & tripod better switch too.

This guy is SPOT ON. Yes, the body shapes itself through muscle memory to regular. Switch will help you come out of messes you never saw coming. I learned in 1996 and rode regular trying to keep up with friends who could only ride regular down steeps. My back went out finally. The only way I can give it a break now IS TO RIDE SWITCH. Learn switch before your back tells you to learn it or you end up with a broken bone because you couldn't make it out of a mess. This dude is a brilliant. Thanks

My key to learning switch was strict desire and discipline to put in time on switch when I still was a beginner and I didn’t really know how to snowboard. About 80/20 split on mediocre normal riding to dicey switch. When that nervous system is primed and absorbing new movements as a beginner, take advantage of that plastic moment where the brain will pattern in switch more readily. So much easier than when a preference has been ingrained to fight against.

It's crazy how suddenly it starts to just click in your mind. I spent the first half of this season focusing on just refining my regular stance since this is my first season boarding after a 5 year hiatus from it. I didn't forget how to board by any means, but still that's a long time. I've been throwing in some switch riding when I come to mellow, flatish, uncrowded spots (hard to find at Park City though). I'd go for a bit, but would catch an edge HARD at least a couple times a day so after a few biffs I'd just say screw practicing it for the day and continue in regular. A couple weeks ago on a powder day, it randomly clicked in my head when I switched around to goofy on a run and somehow I was no longer eating snow after every 50 feet. I swear the day before I couldn't ride switch, but all of a sudden that day I was linking carves, gaining lots of speed, and now able to ride switch on entire runs. It was way weird how I suddenly had it figured out!

It really helped me to angle my back binding a bit more than my front one. I believe my front is 15° and my back is 20°. This helped me with switch riding (especially on those toeside turns because your body doesn't want to change stance so much). I chose switch for a year & passed AASI levels the same. I mean from the second I plop my board to the quiet tired drive home. If I landed reg had to switch back. I occasionaly rode reg because my neck was cramping, but that's it. And I literally got better carving & buttering goofy. The trippy thing wasn't just that I felt slightly more comfy. Instead of getting as good as my reg, my switch kind of had its own style. Any good drummer that plays something different w/ each limb & both brain hemispheres, knows the weird states of mind you experience b/c of it. I play left hand dominant as much or more than I play right. I also mess around with both hands sort of dominating at the same time. It's like trying to dance where both people dominate. You have to take turns, or you WILL crash, but you can get really good at having a back & forth conversation with your spheres & you'll get faster at it.

This is next level advice. I remember my first attempts to ride switch for even a whole run and it felt like learning to ride all over again! When you are strapping in switch for the day are you actually switching your bindings around or just strapping in with back foot binding? Maybe it doesn't matter with a true twin and the same angles? I know a couple of my decks are a little stiffer in the true tail of the board than in the switch tail.
