I like the exposure control feature since it takes all the guesswork out of the shot. Using EV is an educated guess, especially for a novice. Adjusting the ISO and shutter speed might be good when you have much experience or you want to make sure you capture something specific, like movement, etc. Editing in post can effectively bring out data from the shadows. Excellent video Werner.

Oh wow, I just went for a GORGEOUS motorcycle run across some hilly roads with trees covering over the road. And it looks terrible once I got back home, Kept exposing in and out to compensate the dark bits which just ruined it. Thanks for the video I'll have to re-run that road. lol

Will the camera remember the exposure setting if you stop recording and then start again? I film riding my dirt bike in the forest and have a tremendous problem with sunlight coming in the through the trees in patches which creates very bright washed out spots on the forest floor. Then some parts we are on open trails with full sun. Currently I use an ND8 filter, ISO max 800 on GoPro 5 Black. I am trying to find a less ISO setting that will work so there are less overexposed sun spots and less noise/grain.

Great video - thank you! How can you set the exposure when filming yourself? It seems to be impossible as the controls are on the rear screen, which you can't see when the camera is pointed towards you! It doesn't seem to be possible via the GoPro Quik app either, which is a shame as that could solve this issue.

How do you stop the gopro from changing exposure during video?e.g. If the gopro turns from snow to a forest, but still partially filming snow, the forest suddenly goes dark/light which looks super weird. How do you make sure the exposure is locked?
@Eweryno5 жыл бұрын
Good tips. I wonder though, if one is out in the bright sun and also if their gorpo screen brightness is low to save battery, how can really tell just from the back screen, if the settings they just set are correct, too bright or too dark?
@Luckyboyee7775 жыл бұрын
You will need to look for drastic differences in light and dark areas. You should be able to see it even if the brightness is turned down as the levels are relative. Other option is to turn up the LCD brightness for these scenarios. Doesn't happen often. Sunrise sunset going in/outside, and near windows. Another option is get enough footage so that you can cut out the flickering in post processing to show just the good stuff. If it's all one video shoot then you have to lock exposure before.

Hey Joakim, do you have too much motion blur? This may happen in low light. Yes, I think you could try to solve the problem by locking the exposure (or by fixing the shutter to 1/60)

....and how about a snap-on polarizing filter on the gopro in the snow? do you use one?
@MountMediaChannel5 жыл бұрын
No, but I should use ND-Filters more often (to bring down the shutter speed)
@Jammasamma5 жыл бұрын
euh.... i didnt say ND-filter , a nd-filter is not always a polarizing-filter What's the Difference? ... Polarizers or polarizing filters work in a similar way, but the difference is that they selectively let light waves of a certain polarization pass through. This effect helps create more vivid colors in an image, as well as manage glare and reflections...
@MountMediaChannel5 жыл бұрын
Hey DammaRamma, sorry I was a bit unclear. I wanted to say: I normally do not use polarizing filters (even if there would be an obvious benefit on snow). But even more important to me, would be using an ND-Filter - to bring down the shutter speed.
@Jammasamma5 жыл бұрын
@@MountMediaChannel Thanx for clearing that up...thumbs up. i asked it because next month i am going on a skivacation to Tignes Le-Lac. ...with a gopro (7black) and i was wondering, should i use a polarizing-filter in the snow but you dont use it so nevermind...i will test myself it and let you know the results ;-) And again, you are doing great on your channel, love you simple but helpful tips and tutorials, and thats from somebody who knows a thing or two already from gopro's ...keep up the good work !!!

Isn't it common in the FILM industry to rather overexpose, than underexpose your footage. And in the PHOTO industry to rather underexpose, than overexpose your image. When I film with the GoPro shouldn't it be better to set EV Comp. to +0.5 or +1 instead of -0.5 or -1? Or does this general overexpose rule in the filming industry not apply to a GoPro?
@MountMediaChannel4 жыл бұрын
It is especially important to overexpose when you shoot video in a proper log profile such as SLOG on a Sony camera. But these principles do not apply on a GoPro.
@OfficialKoven4 жыл бұрын
@@MountMediaChannel Do you happen to know in what profile GoPro shoots then? Because when you make sure the White Balance is set to Native, Color to Flat, Sharpness to Low, etc. Wouldn't that come close to a LOG Profile and therefore you set EV to +0.5 or +1? Also when I take images with the GoPro in RAW, then I can overexpose right? Because RAW is just a digital negative in principal.
@OfficialKoven4 жыл бұрын
@@MountMediaChannel I would like to add that I just found an explanation on the GoPro website stating that, when shooting in Flat color profile this equals a Log-Curve. Allowing for more dynamic range (in postproduction), so that would kind of imply to overexpose (without clipping the highlights obviously). What do you think? Would you mind testing this? Source: community.gopro.com/t5/en/Advanced-Protune-Controls-Explained/ta-p/390288?profile.language=en
@MountMediaChannel4 жыл бұрын
@@OfficialKoven Yes, I know, but flat on a GoPro does not lead to the same result as a proper log profile on a bigger camera - and the the gain in dynamic range is minimal. If you shoot log on a mirrorless you will mainly overexpose to avoid image noise and not to get more dynamic range. I made a tutorial about LOG-Profiles (for Sony) - you will find it on my channel.
@OfficialKoven4 жыл бұрын
@@MountMediaChannel Thanks for you reply again Werner! I watched the video you mentioned and also your video about ProTune on Hero 6/7. So to sum it up: The LOG-Profile/Curve GoPro creates isn't similar to S-LOG in Sony for example. There is not much more higher dynamic range in the GoPro if you do this, but what is for sure is that the already bright highlights will definitely get clipped and all its information will be lost. Correct? But does it mean that ETTR is still possible on the GoPro if you don't go too crazy, like +0.5? Or would you say that, because in general the GoPro footage is already "too bright" it makes no sense to go after only a little bit more dynamic range, because it costs to much information in the highlights. In your ProTune video you recommended -0.5 EV Comp., does this still stand? Or do you nowadays shoot in 0 or maybe even -1, -1.5 or -2? Did you find a good spot where not much noise is being created in the darker areas when you brighten it in postproduction?
