How to get direct ESL students - online lessons
Have you been thinking about different strategies that can be implemented to get yourself more ESL students, but you have no website nor an academic degree? What methods are successful for finding and retaining new direct students without having to spend money on paid advertisements?
The advantages of having your own learners (instead of working for online companies) are enormous and English learners are everywhere. It is very possible to find them on social media or around your area if you know how to use the tools you already have, and this will mean more flexibility, no strict requirements, more freedom to use your own material etc.
As an online teacher, the first smart strategy is to define a niche, so your marketing strategies can be more specific and it may be easier to convert your audience into paying students. Demographics can play a large role in deciding your niche, but don´t forget to ask yourself the most important question: "Am I going to enjoy teaching this particular group?"
In this video, we will talk about some free/very cheap options for you to find more private students using Facebook and other simple websites, so you can try them, see what works for you and focus your efforts on that.

Hi dear. I’ve recently started with my independent teaching business I followed a few of your steps and those relevant to where I’m from. I am from South Africa by the way so most of the attention I get it’s from Parkistans/Indian people and the problem is they are always complaining about my charges considering their own currency. Are there any specific countries you can advise me to target cause I believe my charges are ridiculously cheap cause I charge $15 per 45 minutes and 10 lessons for $120. It's embarrassing that you made a spelling mistake. There's a common misconception about South Africa not being a native English-speaking country and I understand why. We have a vast amount of official languages and unfortunately people are trying to pass themselves off as 'English Speakers'. This is unsettling to most of us who speak native English and want to teach the language. The problem is that most second language learners can't distinguish between a native English speaker from South Africa and the second language speakers although the difference is crystal clear amongst natives. There's nothing wrong with teaching English as a non-native but declare it and own it. You're welcome for the spelling correction.@@amafriends9152

Sorry for the delay. I would say between €140 - €200 depending on qualifications and on included "services" (for example, I would recommend you to charge more in case students are preparing for exams that require a lot of writing corrections ☺️)

Hello, Mary. I think your videos are very interesting. I'm wondering by doing something very similar but with European Portuguese. I already have my own students on face-to-face classes and online. I'm giving particular classes and I work for some companies, giving some face-to-face and online courses. I also live in Spain as you. I'm Portuguese and I'm teaching Portuguese and English to Spanish speakers, English and Spanish to Portuguese speakers and Portuguese and Spanish to English speakers. As you can see I don't have a niche because I love this variety. I love speaking three languages per day. That's what really makes me happy. But as you can imagine I have a list of students waiting for a hour to have classes with me. There are coming more and more students and what makes me worse is having no time for them and even though I'm not earning enough money to be a self-employee or freelancer... I would like to know how I could change that. The mayority of my classes are individual and I'm a little tired of it.

Hi Liliana! Your journey as a teacher sounds interesting, the fact you have a waiting list shows how good you are 😊 Have you thought about grouping the students by level? For example, you can group 3 or 4 Portuguese learners together in an online lesson and charge them less per hour (better rates for you as there will be more people paying for the same hour). Have you been thinking about creating a channel on KZbin to teach Portuguese? If you believe you have enough language to share and passion, go for it! If you don't feel very confident, you can try to start teaching low-level students...also make sure you prepare yourself before each class, make sure you anticipate possible problems and are ready to deal with possible emerging vocabulary 💪💪 I have another video about first classes that may help you. Building a course takes time. Best tip is to get feedback from doing one on on to develop a course that can scaffold and support each learner as they go through the steps. Outlining your course can help. Also, asking your students/getting feedback on social media/email list can help you to determine the starting point and where your students are in the learning stages of the topic. Once you understand the basic steps that need to be taken, you can begin to develop a course that could quite possibly convert to an evergreen course once you tweak it after gaining feedback from students who have taken the course.
