It's hard to understand, truth is in most situations they know the rules but their instincts kick on while in the heat of the moment. Some of these guys practice BJJ for years or even decades, often 5 to 6 hours a day or longer. They do the same drills over and over, it's constant repetition. The purpose of such training is so that when a split seconds determines who gets the advantage, a fighter does not even have to think, his body will just instinctively react. From certain positions their body goes on auto pilot and it just does what they have rehearsed their whole lives. Its like jabbing at your face with out warning but telling you there is rule that you can't flinch when it happens. Even if you know the rule, odds are you will flinch.

How do you defend at 5:18 if you can't slam.. it should be illegal to hold on.
@icarusbbqwings1735
@icarusbbqwings1735 7 жыл бұрын
This will sound like a pretty meh answer but you don't let yourself get put into that position in the first place and he should not have stood up. On the ground he at least had a chance to wiggle out before the triangle was locked in. When he stood up he had zero chance at all of an escape.
@mmaloser666
@mmaloser666 7 жыл бұрын
You should only fully stand if you know the quicker way out. I don't understand why people stand though, especially since majority end up slamming. If you have a triangle locked in, work the ground defense first imo. And it shouldn't be illegal to hold, the holder is the one attempting a submission. If your defense sucks, then don't try and stand with a guy attempting a triangle on you.

I think you misunderstood me. Getting DQ'd because you did something leglocky that ist forbidden, you done fucked up. You need to know the rule format in which you compete but the word "rule format" is crucial here. These are restrictive rules they place on BJJ to make it more safe to compete but they still restrict something. So in my opinion (emphasising this) its not correct no leglocks in BJJ. It's in IBJJF matches if you know what I am getting at.

One of the worst things to happen in martial arts was the boorish behavior that BJJ-style fighting and grappling tournaments allow. Competitors with zero bearing should simply be suspended from or banned from such and future tournaments, as to not shine such a disgraceful light on the sport

4:20 doesn't look like a slam to me. The dude holding the guillotine sort of jumped guard and the other lost balance. But he didn't use any additional force to slam his opponent apart from gravity itself, and even that without such apparent intention.

Heel hocks are allowed in brown and black belts in ibjjf rules. Of course this should not be allowed in lower belts because the lack of experience can lead in serious injuries. @SwordTune
@SwordTune 5 жыл бұрын
@@HessianLikeTheFabric No it's not. Expecting something to happen and letting something happen are two different things. You shouldn't expect someone to break the rules, but you can't blindly trust that the other guy will follow them. It's not rational to let yourself get harmed just because the rules say you're right.
@SwordTune
@SwordTune 5 жыл бұрын
@@HessianLikeTheFabric What's the point in winning in a martial arts competition if you use skills that lose the fight? Yes, it's a sport, but the purpose of the competition is to create an environment where people can test their BJJ against others. One should not break the rules, but as martial artists you have a responsibility for your safety and should be ready when the rules are broken.
@SwordTune
@SwordTune 5 жыл бұрын
@@HessianLikeTheFabric I think it can be strived for, at least. I hear a lot of complaints about the rules turning BJJ into a game. People want a safe sport that's also a martial art. The only way is to acknowledge the reality of danger even during the competition. My first style is weapons, specifically swordsmanship. Look at modern fencing and you'll see the same thing: Olympic fencing is about athletic speed, and almost none of them are competent swordsmen (or swordswomen). Yet, I have been able to use historical military sabre cuts within sport fencing, and outside of the competitions you can still practice cuts with sharp blades on water bottles or rolled up mats, which can increase speed and accuracy for regular competitions anyway. Fusing the competition and martial arts side of any style is possible, I believe.

Something that I never understood is that some tournament rule sets allow you to start a sub to transition or pass, but if you cinch it up its a DQ. If you KNOW that a submission is not allowed, why would it be an effective reversal if you aren't threatened by it. They also seem to be a lot less forgiving about the slams these days. It basically had to look like a powerbomb in my neck of the woods.
