This is a good reason why pro wrestling is fake... they know how to fall and have to practice these techniques or their career is done instantly. I know JJ or BJJ is an amazing martial art, but this does prove the weakness in the art (Yes, I know it's a competition and you shouldn't slam). However, when the one getting slam doesn't sense the need to let go of the hold for the sake of self preservation because they believe the 'rules' are going to keep them safe is a weakness. I hope they don't believe the same will apply outside the mat.

In judo once you elevate a person whose legs are around your waist, it's a restart. A similar rule should exist in BJJ. If you jump guard and your back doesn't hit the mat in, say, three seconds, your opponent gets an advantage. It would promote takedowns.

There are takedowns in BJJ that include judo and involve the opponents weight being tossed around submitted but don't require throwing all the opponents weight into the ground. The thing to remember is that No Slamming is just a rule to keep competitors safe... Like no eye gouging, fish hooking, biting, etc..... Saying that Jiu Jitsu isn't street applicable is not entirely correct.... There are two very different worlds in the community... self defense and competition.... both have their positives and negatives... training both is what will make you a more complete martial artist and safer in a street fight situation. To say that slamming should be legal in competition is like saying you should be able to beat people with a bat during a baseball game.... yes its possible but not in the spirit of the game. I haven't seen anyone complaining that Tyson should have been allowed to bite off all his opponents ears...

And this is how sport jiu-jitsu will go the route of all the other martial arts like karate and Tae Kwon do. Training to win competitions with limited rules and points will take the teeth out of a great martial art and teach students techniques that will get them in trouble on the streets.

For people that practice both martial and sport is very difficult to separate the two, because what is effective for the martial art, can get you DQ in the sport. In the 80s and 90s there were lots DQ in Taekwondo, now days you rarely see DQ in TKD, but because so much énfasis has been put into the sport, TKD has become almost useless for self-defense. keep BJJ a martial art or the different sport organization would start to regulate how things are done and this would eventually affect the martial art.

The problem is that BJJ conditions you to stay close to the opponent and take the fight to the ground. This is good in a competition situation but bad in a street fight where you have to expect multiple opponents, weapons and dirty fighting.
@Frank_C_

yyyboy You are better of closing distance when fighting an opponent with a weapon. If he has a gun and u are 20 ft away, you will get shot. If he has a bat and you are anywhere near his reach, you will get hit. If you are up close, he can't swing a weapon at you, you can disarm him, and when it comes to the gun, you have a better chance of surviving if you can reach the firearm.

It's only slightly more idiotic than saying boxing doesn't work because because boxers in the ring don't defend against suplexes and knee joint kicks. Oh wait it is way more idiotic than that, like you. BJJ has a litany of techniques to address this outside of sport competition that begins with an obvious move that you're probably too stupid to even enunciate.

I feel like BJJ has swung too far towards grappling due to the popularity of MMA and competition. This misleads people to think it's useful in a 'real fight', when in fact it's completely worthless when outnumbered. Anyone with real world combat experience will understand that you have to assume everyone nearby is or could be an enemy, so you're always fighting as if outnumbered. I can see the appeal of BJJ for sport and social purposes.

You do realize that Gracie Jiu-Jitsu or Street Jiu-Jitsu is different than competition Jiu-Jitsu, right? Those guys got slammed because they were not expecting to be slammed, as the event rules don't allow slamming. If there were no rules, they would never hold to the armbars or triangles when being lift up. Would never keep their hooks in from the back when the other guy stood up. They would either wrap themselves on the opponent's leg and finish the triangle or open the legs and go for a sweep or takedown.

+HelloJapan05 I feel like there should be a distinction between a slam which includes both bodies and throwing someone off which only includes the opponent's body weight. Case 2:52 and 3:29. That should be legal. It's no harder than a full on Judo throw. Also takedowns should include full on slams. At least from purple belt onward. It's stupid that a proper O-Goshi (Hip Toss) is illegal but a Kani Basami (Flying scissors) is legal in BJJ. If you can't do proper Ukemi (Break falls) you aren't a grappler. Simple as that. It's really stupid that people in BJJ argue for hanging on an opponent when they are clearly in a bad position. It's unrealistic. forget about arguing for or against Berimbolo, this shit is the worst. And though slamming is a safety measure, I feel at black belt it should be 100% legal. Just like in the new ADCC. Jeff Glover vs Geo at ADCC was a good match because it showed that stupidity is worthless.

+fahadkelantan Slamming like that should be loosen up on, I agree, like you should know how to take a fall, and its not like its on cement its a mat, they should be able to absorb lighter slams easily because if somebody picks you up, you aren't in a good place, slamming should be legal in some situations, they have stupid rules against it. I totally agree with you, at purple belt, they should know how to take a fall, or they shouldnt be a purple belt, half the art is getting to the ground, why are you limiting that? but regulations should exist, some soams are plain dirty,but others are just like "what do I do, I'm standing up with a guy triangle choking me?" they need tp think about that with sport jiu-justu

That's like saying if you post up a triangle get ready for a foot to the face when the other guy stacks. Maybe follow the rules and don't be a try hard. There's always one guy in the gym who has to hip toss when you're starting from the knees.

Now this I can agree with. BJJ should really gravitate more towards actual fighting, with techniques that work against all situations. Turning it into a sport limits it the way judo has been.
