i believe that’s a drum pad machine not a practice pad

I'm playing on a Roland Octopad here (which is not turned on!), but you don't need one of those. Most practice pads, table tops, books, cushions etc will do the job. In fact practising on a variety of different surfaces is a good idea I'd say. Cheers!

OK, I'm not fast at this exercise at all, maybe half the BPM you're up to. Is there anything else I should be working on to gain speed? I feel super sluggish compared to what you're doing, and I have to think about the triplets in my head, and I make a lot of mistakes as I go. Same with Paradiddles. Is there a trick to letting your mind go so I don't have to think about every hit? I feel like I'm having trouble automating my hands.

Thanks for watching. The single stroke triplets I'm playing in this video are just an example, the practice principle is the important thing here - not the exercise I'm demonstrating it with. How long have you been playing? The main point of this video is that being consistent with this method (as well as playing with a metronome at steady tempo) over years is the best way to improve, in my opinion and my experience. If I can add one thing, we refer to it as 'building' speed, which is such a great word for it. It's built, one brick at a time, over time, and it takes many bricks to get there. A faster drummer has just put more bricks down, there's no magic trick. If you want more speed, you need more bricks, and there's no shortcut. Good luck, keep building! And enjoy the process

@@MikeBarnesDrums Thanks! I've been playing about 18 months, and I practice a bit on my kit almost every day, but I focus more on learning\playing songs and rhythms than rudiments. It feels like there's just so many things to learn! For instance, I still practice your video about Ballroom Blitz -- that beat is super tricky for me to do fast. I do work with a metronome pretty regularly, and I've seen a lot of progress in my playing, but I've gotten frustrated trying to get fast with things like paradiddles. I keep saying "paradiddle paradiddle" over and over in my head, and I can only think that so fast. If I try to go faster than I can think it, like just counting to four, I get messed up. I'm going to commit 10 minutes a day to the slow-fast-slow and see how it goes. Thanks Mike!

The key to playing without thinking is repetition. Although I don't play drums I do play guitar and I like to sing while playing. There is no magic trick. You just keep playing and walking away from it when you start making too many mistakes and coming back again and when you give it a day off sometimes the next day you are nice and clean. But like I said the key is repetition. When I learn a fairly difficult piece when I'm playing the Baseline and an arpeggio along with partial chords while singing, I have to play this until I can say the alphabet backwards without thinking about my hands. This can take a couple of weeks on One Piece but when you finally have it, it's something that will stay with you forever. You can sing with emotion and feeling not thinking about your hands. Now being a drummer, you have a lot more responsibility than I do as a solo player because everyone is depending on the main reason for having the drummer, keeping time. All the greatest drum rolls and triplets you can play Don't Mean a damn thing if you are playing out of time, but I can get away with it but I'm sure it is closed but if I put it to a metronome I'm also sure I would be off time. The drummer does not have that luxury . If the band is playing out of time, you want to be able to say it's not my fault I am playing in time let's put it to a metronome and let them keep up with you not the other way around although there are times and situations where the drummer might have to make compromises but it's unfortunate because he or she is the timekeeper
