i liked shallow when i saw trailer for a star is born, i couldnt wait till it gets out so i can hear the whole thing and the wait was about a year long i think... its funny how the song blew up in this huge thing that makes it really annoying... and i play it to i even covered it on my other chan, to no effect but yeh xD my band and i are starting to add party songs that are popular with people into our setlist because we really saw huw much effect it can have. you can play songs you love and no one knows and play the perfect and thats alright, but when people start getting happier as the night moves on if you play a popular song and not even well people go crazyyy, so yeh... also it is important to stay current and play songs that people know from the radio but were not there yet, more or less because we get to practice only once a week even if that so its hard just to keep up to speed with our old and slowly expanding setlist thats 30++ songs now but still

I'm totally guilty of not listening to much new music (well, at least not current pop music). Funny you should mention Billie Eilish, though. Had relatives visiting the past week, and my niece (who is 12) was showing me Billie Eilish videos. I showed her the Dovydas video where he does Bad Guy. My niece was like "uh....no." Lol. Anyway, good point. I'll have to make more of an effort, there.

This is an honest question I have as a new musician, do people really expect to get anywhere as a cover band? Do these musicians just play for the money? Why don't more bands play mostly originals anymore?
@seandaniel23
@seandaniel23 3 жыл бұрын
Depends on the city and their gig economy. But here for instance people who play original music don’t get hired. So for me, playing out is just to make money and have fun, promoting my original stuff is a totally different ballgame that gets more energy online. There’s a next to impossible chance of like ‘making it’ as a cover band, but you definitely learn your chops and get experience as a performer by doing it.

The guitar polish reminded me of a funny story. Last year I go to a local “mom & pop” music store to purchase guitar polish. “Pop” asked if he could help me and I put the polish on the counter. “Just this please”, I say. He actually said, “Oh great, now I can have dinner tonight!” Lol

Here's my midnight confession (which is also a clue to my age): I'm totally calcified, and ok with it. Years ago I finally allowed myself to stop feeling guilty over not listening to new music. My iPhone is loaded mostly with albums (yes, albums) that I've been listening to for decades. I'm not exaggerating when I say I could listen to nothing but Bowie, Hendrix and Zeppelin for the rest of my life and be fine with it. I think I play guitar (or make lame attempts) so I can deconstruct the same songs. Let the diagnosing begin...

I guess if one listens only to new music, then some of it has to stand out from the rest. Help Me Stranger? It's rhythmic, and it's kinda catchy. But compared to the styles of music I listen to (yeah, older music mostly) the song is rather undistinguished and, let's face it, the songwriting is pretty darn pedestrian.

Go to clubs that have live music talk to the guy or girl who hires the bands and either give then the link to your facebook page or web page. Or give them a cd. Then call back in a week or so and keep calling every couple of weeks. Tell them you can fill in if you they have cancellation. do open mic's and see if you can get a gig in the bar . Some places have auditions, set up an audition and see if you can get hired

Did my homework, and enjoyed it. This came as no surprise to me. Just in case you're slipping behind a bit, trying to keep up with Russian blues, here's *Anton Oparin* (you might remember him as a little 11 year old boy, shredding some of the most difficult Paul Gilbert songs) playing what I think is an original. As a craftsman, I think what you might most appreciate is how clean the notes stay, even when he hits the gas. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p565n3R8rM6Fo7c (Song is called *The Next* - an English title on a channel that sticks to "paRooskiy" for announcements etc. - and I seem to hear more of the shreddy stuff each time I listen to it.) Check out his acoustic strumming/ noodling video of recently, too.
