I went to BYU from Fall of 1984 and graduated in December 1989. I got a BS in Finance with minors in Managerial Economics and Business Composite. Best advice is be realistic about your major start slowly with some GE requirements to get acclimated to the university work load. I had several very smart friends get on academic probation and had to leave BYU because they either took too hard classes early on or too many classes a semester, or enjoyed college life too much and didnt study hard enough early on. I had no car, very little money, and no TV in my room, and had a single dorm room and only worked during summers. I later got a Computer Science degree from Cal State and I have to say you are very fortunate to be going to BYU! I took AP biology in high school, 3 years of Spanish, I graduated in the 14th percentile in High School. If you ever seen the movie "Brick" that was my High School in San Clemente, California.

Hi Hope! Thank you for your awesome video! Hopefully, when I'm older I can make it to Provo! How hard is it? I'm about an average student, I'm in my freshmen year of H.S, my lowest serious grade is a 55% in alg. and the rest are all B's. Are those good grades for Provo? Do you have to be *super* smart? I just want to do my best and see how far I can go, and really, it starts here!
@louisaporter771
@louisaporter771 3 жыл бұрын
Other people might answer this differently, but for me and my roommates (we're all freshman at BYU) its not so much about being smart as it is being willing to put in the work. It's definitely a hard school but so doable if you make a commitment to work hard and try your best!! :)

Hey so I am applying to BYU and have about a 3.6 gpa and 28 ACT. I know that I am below average on academics, but I need killer essays to compensate. I have sports, volunteer work, eagle scout. I am confused with the essay about "are you aware of any needs in your community". I did a service project in Mexico and am an eagle scout. Not sure what to write about (both, or one). What did you write for yours?

For the putting in your own classes and grades stuff, do you still need to send in your transcript? Also, when I was looking at the BYU Idaho application, it has only one slot for grades. Do you know if you would only put your 2nd semester grades in there?
@hopeknudson6103

Sierra West you have to send a transcript still. They will compare your transcript to the grades you put in. I don’t know about Byu Idaho but I am pretty sure you just put your most current grades!

Getting into BYU had always been my dream, I want nothing more. However, with COVID and online school I have been slacking off more than I should. I’m doing my best to stay on top of my work, especially in Math. I don’t have any Fs, but I’m just asking the comments and someone with experience whether or not you still have a chance at being accepted to BYU Provo. I’m a Freshman in HS so still haven’t had any real experiences since it’s all been online. It’s been tough on me. Also another question: would they rather have someone with a 4.0 and no extracurriculars or someone with a 3.5 and really good extracurriculars? Anyway, those are my questions. Thanks!

(This comment is not to hijack this video, just in case someone perceives it that way...I am just a nobody trying to help somebody...I was trying to answer the simple question and ended up cooking a pot of whatever I just wrote lol Sorry to Max Foster for this drastic answer) I'm no expert... but I believe what they (BYU admissions/recruiters) want to see is how you challenge yourself and carry yourself through both secular and non-secular experiences. My recommendation is that you try to aim for a 3.8 gpa or higher from your sophomore year to your senior year. You're a freshman, right? Since it's your first transition from middle school to high school most colleges understand that students may not perform the best (especially, in S.I.P.). What matters is what you do afterward. Remember this! HAVE A GROWTH MINDSET!! There will be shortcomings, but it's our option to choose endurance or giving up. It's your choice. You choose. Not everyone has the opportunities to do typical extracurriculars, for example, some have personal duties at home; which you can probably talk about. However, what you can do if you really want to do extracurriculars is join the clubs from your school or online opportunities (IMPORTANT: DO IT BECAUSE YOU LOVE IT!! It's YOUR PASSION, not because it's impressive :/ if you do that your motivation will BURN YOU OUT---Not healthy SELF-CARE IS CRUCIAL + in my opinion that would be wasting your time because you choose something that could have been a lot better, but for benefit of something that doesn't sincerely connect back to you, you choose it? cuz why? *no judgment* anyways that's just my personal thought; participate in things that you'll enjoy is what I'm trying to say *nervous emoji*) The good thing about online opportunities is that it can be done through zoom and with that, you don't have to hustle getting to whatever place you're participating at lol. SAVE GAS MONEY! :) It can convenient sometimes. Be mindful that not all virtual spaces are for everyone. You might be different, so don't be hard on yourself. From my understanding and memory, the application asks you for 2 Activities; out of all your 4yrs of high school, you will choose to talk about just 2 (other college apps are different) that stand out to you and 4 essays about the overall experiences you had. (Can be personal or whatever level you define personal as :D) I wouldn't stress too much about it, but it's always good to show schools what your capable of outside of your academics. Not going to lie, it's hard, and some folks are still trying to figure it all out...but find that BALANCE that fits you! Organize a schedule! Anyways, anyhow, and anywho lol, long answer short is that they may want a good mix. By that I mean if your grades suck, have your transcript do some talking by improving over the quarters/semsters/year. I'll let you know something...my freshman yr sucked too. The lowest gpa I have gotten all throughout HS is my freshman yr, but then my sophomore year things got better. Once you feel like you're in a good place and maintain a firm structure with your grades, don't be afraid to spice it up the next year; cuz now hopefully you know your boundaries, + where your strengths lie. Do what you know you and only you can do! You have strength! Don't doubt it, find it! **PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT YOUR HEALTH IS A PRIORITY ALWAYS** Good Luck! I know that probably starting HS through this pandemic is not the idealist...I mean I'm a senior in HS and I didn't want to graduate on zoom lol. We in the same boat and we gotta be steadfast. >>> You're already moving forward, by looking into these videos and asking questions! Keep doing what you're doing! The next few years of HS go by really fast, and sooner than you know it you will be applying! YAYYYY!!! Ohhhh also I hear you on the slacking off more than you should, yes! lol That happens, procrastination at its finest is not going to help you in the long-run lol I can testify to that as well. Do, however, take time for self-care! Burnouts could drain a lot out of you. :[ My last piece of advice to you is found in D&C 6:36! "Look unto me in every thought doubt not, fear not"! Trust God! As much as we try to work and take control of things, this is His plan and He's the one who wants us to succeed. Everyone is on a journey, and with a journey, there will be many tracks where one might be going uphill, downhill, backward, forwards, fast, or slower. Trying to steer one way in control of everything, but the One who made the tracks and knows everything is right there waiting for you to ask for directions. Pray, He answers your prayer! Might not be by your own timing, but He does answer it with full understanding. He does it in the right place at the right time. You are on a different journey than I am, vice versa. Things will get tough, and there will be a time where you might compare yourself with something or someone. If that happens REMEMBER you're on your journey and I am on my own, God has a different set of directions for the both of us. Have hope and faith because it'll be your security of seeing light in dark tunnels. ( Again Sorry, if this was too long lol. I just spat out what came to mind that I thought could be helpful. Hopefully, it makes decent sense too ahhh lol...Have a blessed day everyone! Shout out to my fellow classof2021 + Good Luck to future BYU Provo Applicants!!

Do you know how BYU views empty classes in a schedule? Like I’m two years ahead in my math and a year ahead in my science so I will most likely have two empty classes on my schedule. I’m not sure if it’s better to leave them empty or take like 2 more electives just to fill my schedule?
@hopeknudson6103

Zoë A I know a lot of people who have empty blocks. As long as your electives keep your gpa up, I would try to learn something new. Or try to get a leadership position instead of a class like being a TA or try student council!

How would one get into BYU as non-LDS? I believe that I have the grades (3.8 Gpa), merit, etc., but I don’t have the church recommendations. I also would be open to possibly joining the church if I went to BYU.
@ohboyitslauren
@ohboyitslauren 5 жыл бұрын
Adam A H You can still get into BYU if you are not a church member (although I’m sure it makes it a lot less complicated). I would try contacting the school directly and ask for help. Being part of the church just helps a ton because the tuition will be lower, honor code will be easier to follow, you’ll probably feel a lot less lonely in a school full of majority church members. Also I know that it’s easier to get in if you have a lot of diversity or you volunteer or do humanitarian projects, things like that. The ACT also matters to them a lot so as long as you get about a 30+ you’re usually good to go. Hope this helps!

Seminary recs are not required for those who are not members. The bishop interview is just to see if you will live the honor code, and that can be done with any nearby bishop and is super easy. The application will prompt you with some nearby church buildings where you can do that.
