I think the reasons many people drop out of berklee is the opportunities that come by, you said it yourself, you dont NEED a degree to get in the music industry. I went to one of berklee's summer programs and my teacher there dropped out of berklee after about 3 and a half years, since he had the opportunity to tour and another semester cost a lot of money. I'm pretty sure John Mayer dropped out too, for a similar reason.

I'm fourteen so i know i shouldn't be too worked up about college, but my mom recently told me that my dad would eventually ask me what i wanted to do in life and what college i would love to go to. my mom told me to do my research and my dad would understand. I've been looking at berklee's courses and classes, even events that they have. I know many might say that I am too young to know what college I want to go to, but I Truly believe that if I want to pursue music, Berklee is the best school. The only thought that has worried me the most was what you talked about in your video. Music is a very fragile subject, it's more free and you can't just find the job that easily, it's kind of like a very thin rope. I'm afraid that even if I do get in, I wont find anything out there that will help me do what I want to, and the last thing I want is an"I warned you about this happening" speech. the one thing I know for sure is that I want to be able to help people the same way music helped me, using music. But not necessarily music therapy. I really liked this video, thank you for making it.

The main takeaway is that if you're serious about music and work hard, you will find a career in music in one way or another! I'd recommend the 5-week program... Show this message to your parents and tell them it will be the best decision they ever made to send you to Berklee for the 5-week experience. Good luck! :)

I'm 23 and I started playing guitar 5 years ago. I think I'm a intermediate level player but feels like i'm stuck right know. For me it have been very difficult to practice guitar since I started playing at the same time I started college so I didn't had a lot of time to practice as much as I wanted. I'm a self taught guitarist and I learned a lot all this time but know I feel like I need a teacher to get to the next level. I always going to regret the fact that I didn't start playing guitar earlier, now i'm getting my degree on engineering but my passion is music. At least I can have the guitar as a hobby. you don't need a music degree unless you want a piece of paper. You can find a guitar teacher that graduated from Berklee or another music school. Tell the teacher to teach you everything he or she learned from the curriculum. Those topics are sight reading, music theory, harmony concepts, how to analyze Jazz, blues, and pop music, ear training like identifying intervals, major, minor, augmented, diminished triads, 7th chords, chord progressions, harmonic intervals ( 2 intervals played at the same time like a chord), guitar technique like rest strokes, reverse rest stroke, dynamics, vibrato, bending, playing with nuance, controlling your touch and control of the guitar, memorizing scales and their notes like Major scale and it's modes, melodic and harmonic minor, their modes and also chord progressions of those scales. Other important scales are the bebop (major, minor, and dominant is probably enough) although there are many more bebop scales, you could learn the chords built from the bebop scales also. Learn how to play cycles like cycle 2, cycle 3, cycle 4, etc you could do this with any scale like C major /(root pos)cycle 3 is C major, minor, G major, b diminished, d minor, f major, a minor, c major 1st inversion. You could do this with melodic and harmonic minor scales. learn how to harmonize melodies and learn reharmonization techniques. Learn how to transcribe music like guitar players, to sax players, horn players, etc. Learn how to count music in other time signatures and how to recognize different music meters. Learn chord progressions that come from the major modes and what notes of the major modes define the mode. For example, Dorian is defined by its natural 6. Dorian has a b3 ( flat 3) and b7 (flat 7) which is the same as the aeolian mode or natural minor except nature minor also has a flat 6th as well as the flat 3 and flat7 which means Dorian is unique because of the natural 6, it sounds minor because the 3 and 7 ( the leading tone) is flatted by the 6 is natural, making it brighter. The Lydian (4th) major mode is unique because it has a #4 meaning a C Lydian mode is the same as C major except C Lydian has an F# ( #4). The Dorian mode is the second major mode. All the modes have unique notes like this, they have chord progressions derived from their notes also like any scale. Also learning 4th voicings and how to use them in blues , jazz and other styles is good to work on These are only some topics you could work on but this is most of the curriculum taught in music schools ( Berklee ) I'm not sure about other music schools but I would assume these are taught at other schools like MI also.

I graduated nursing school a year ago. In high school I felt such a tug gravitating towards music, but due to many reasons, I chose nursing. After years of trying to fit elsewhere, being afraid, I have come to the conclusion that above all else, taking care of myself needs to be priority. While I am still on that journey, I have fallen in love once again with music, and I have felt the same tug towards going to Berklee. I think it may take a couple years, but I want to try. Discouraged but never dictated.

I never went to Berkeley, but I've live about 20 minutes from the school my entire life. My favorite gear-buying seasons have always been December before Christmas break and late spring when people are graduating. Every year I'd buy an amp and to a lesser degree guitars and countless pedals and various equipment. Unlike the typical State schools like University of Massachusetts-Boston, a large chunk of students are from other states. There's always people graduating then moving back to their home or some other state. The need for money, space and to lighten their travel has always worked in my favor. I can always find things that I can pick up for a few hundred$ less than you can buy them used anywhere else.

Very helpful video for the youth. I wish this existed in 2007 when I went to Millikin University in Decatur, IL. I got in on a trumpet scholarship for music business. I didn't think about a career until after the 1st semester and got cold feet. Dropped out in 2010 and now have oodles of student loan debt. Think before you declare kids!

I love playing the guitar especially learning theory but I'm broke as hell. so I buy books etc and I take my time learning theory, techniques, and skills setting. I worry that I won't be able to afford going to any college or university alot and I work and come home and just play the guitar. I guess many people have been where I am or are. I honestly don't care if I make money or not and I'm not after fame, I just want to be able to go further in my musical journey. I tried out in Boston in 2005... I had been playing guitar for 7 years at that point.. and reading music and in school bands from 4th-12th grade. Did all you said there.. Played the ear training "call and answer" back perfectly. Got on the waiting list.. and They said No in the mail.. So i said F Berklee and went to Musicians Institute in CA.

I think why ppl generally go to college (especially creative field) is for networking. Its much easier then to look for job and collaborations and opportunities when u have already social bubble of needed field. When you on your own its way harder to find opportunities. Even if you make amazing music. I think Berklee is the place that gives you a lot of opportunities.

I had the chance to go to music school after high school, including Berklee and Musicians Institute, but sadly decided to forego those options due to the significant impact that the industry has had on up and coming musicians. After taking a left turn from the industry and getting both a bachelor's and master's degree now, I'm thinking of getting regaining what I lost by not going to berklee or MI (especially after the years of guitar practicing and music theory classes throughout my life), and think the online programs would be great. What are your thoughts on the Berklee online certificate programs, and do they add any real value?

It's not just Berklee. I study Music Ed. at Western Illinois University, and the music department's drop rate of freshmen alone is over 50% in the first semester. Many people do not realize the hard work that goes into studying music. It's admirable that so many people want to pursue music, but I feel many underestimate the hours that are really required. I don't know how rough it was for you at Berklee, but I know many kids at Western who only study music who end up very sleep deprived throughout the semesters.

So I decided to attend UW Madison to major in data science while still taking a piano class. I just graduated in May 2022 and now I'm an intern for the Minnesota Twins baseball team!

question, does berklee accept igsce? i’m not an american citizen and i live in malaysia, is there anything that i need academically or a diploma in music to get into berklee?

i love music, but i'm really scared about realising in the future i'm not that good enough or i really don't have that much interest, so my planing is to first get a degree that guarantees me a job that i like enough for doing it my whole life and suport a family and THEN focus all my guts on music, but knowing that if i fail i get a backup. what do you think about it Tyler? i'm starting 11 grade on 3d design to follow architecture

Idk if I'm looking to be a musician for a career but I do LOVE music and I play bass. I guess I'm ok at what I'm but I would really want to improvise on bass a lot. And going to Burklee would be a dream of mine
