convalescent mode is a totalizing mindset. it is a complete paradigm shift whereby you prioritize your physical, emotional, mental and psychological needs above all else. sometimes this means getting in touch with patterns and habits that cause you to ignore or downplay your needs or ignore them totally.

The perfect title to your book would be “I have just researched my burnout”

Thank you for your thoughts. They are very inspiring. As a late-diagnosed autistic person with a history of severe early childhood trauma, self-abandonment led me to such extreme burnout (+ post-viral health complications) it almost resulted in death. I lost everything. My independence, my relationship, my job as a sound engineer/composer, the list goes on. I've been mostly bedridden for almost 2 years. That being said, this period of convalescence is the single most enlightening period of my life. When you reach that critical point, there's no option but to begin a radical realignment of the systems that have been out of whack. I have been methodically addressing each pillar of my life, and the improvements, whilst small, are gloriously hope-inducing in their tangibility.

Also I 100% get what you say when you talk about convalescence. For me it is kind of the point where you stop feeling guilt about not getting as much stuff done as you could, and you recognize and prioritize rest and recovery. What I've come to learn is that convalescence is a state that it is good to fall in regularly. The need to heal is constant. It is better to do it daily than to let the scars pile up.

Learning to manage the dopamine system was key for me to get out and stay out of burnout, while being productive. Also my shift towards body first living: you can't work if you are burnt out, therefore taking care of yourself and prioritizing your needs is the key to consistent productivity.

Thanks for sharing your insights. As someone with ADHD, I often have difficulty in resting, or as you say, getting into convalescence mode. I think neurotypical resting activities are not quite useful for ADHD folks, since it's near impossible to sideline that urge to do something. Usually, light physical activities are quite useful for me to have a rest. I am open to anyone's thoughts or advice on the topic.

What's your advice, when you can't afford to rest. In 3rd world countries. Anyway I am happy for you that you are doing what you desire

I live in a 3rd world country. You can afford to rest, it's a matter of mindset and being smart.

@@hrdcpy i provided advice: change your mindset. If you think that you can't afford to take care of yourself, you are setting yourself up to never do it. And speaking in strictly economic terms, taking care of yourself is cheaper in the long run. If you think you can't afford it just consider that medication and hospital bills are expensive.

ADHD makes it hard when you are financially stressed and top of the line medication is banned or unaffordable. Still I got the point . "MINDSET"

I get it totally. I would say I've been burnt out for the last 5 or 6 years.... same issues with doctors etc. Found a therapist that has helped me find 'this state' and I still struggle but I tell you what, just going nope, I'm going to do what I need to do to recover; it feels so damn good. I've been doing this for a few months now and I think I'm slowly getting some energy back, the really difficult part, though, is not overachieving because I have more energy..... oh, I've appreciated getting better sleeps also it is just lifechanging

Congrats on getting better sleep I'm pretty sure I have apnea and I've tried a lot of things that didn't work and now I think I'm going to have to take the medical route to fix it

Yeah I just slept a bunch for a week, adjusted my work schedule, and tried to catch up. I ended up having to drop my class, but at least I was back into the cadence of things.

Hey Dave. What would you do if you can’t get out of a cycle of gaming too much, giving into dopamine/being manipulated by the algorithm. I’m 21 years old and have been gaming my whole life. I really value your content and I enjoy your thoughts on radical alignment. If you had to make a radical change in your life, what would you do! Ok thanks

I’m no expert, but I would completely cut out gaming. And replace it with another activity that can fill that void it’ll leave behind, initially, until you find something you’re passionate about. I just sold my PS5 & TV yesterday and am instead enjoying reading ;) I was just recommended the book Atomic Habits recently, which might also help you vs the algorithms

Consider this: study your gaming and derive insights. Perhaps take a week and log your gaming sessions. Another idea: Set aside an hour a day to NOT game, and log your thoughts/feelings. Consider ratcheting down gaming sessions by starting a little later every day (this is a quit smoking technique)
